There Will Be Blood : 'If someone goes down into the cellar…'

'If someone goes down into the cellar…'

After the first man is killed by the drill bit being knocked down into the well onto his head, Daniel is woken up and taken to the site where he says to the men who knocked the bit into the well:

"If someone goes down into the cellar, you tell someone. Yes?"

What does this mean? The men knew there was another man down in there because they panicked when the bit was knocked. So it's not like the guy was down there and nobody knew and that's why he died.... So what does this line mean?? It's driven me crazy for years but I always forget to post the question on here

What does this mean??

Re: 'If someone goes down into the cellar…'

I think he just meant "be careful"

Re: 'If someone goes down into the cellar…'

The cellar refers to that pit that the man is in. It's actually not clear why the men panic--they may not have realized he was down there at that time and they were freaking out because they lost the bit. It's also possible that they knew he was down there and Daniel said it to save face, ie, "This was an unfortunate accident because the dead guy made a mistake."
