There Will Be Blood : Mary Sunday

Mary Sunday

That's an odd relationship. She seems to be the only one Daniel tries to be nice to.

I mean he is nice to her without getting anything from it.

And really she is the only female Daniel ever talks to.

And it seems like the girl like him.

Remember shes hugs him after his 'baptism' .
Weird relationship, like everything else in this film, I'm sure it means something but I don't know what.

i told you not to stop the boat. Now lets go. Apocalypse Now

Re: Mary Sunday

He is nice to Mary because H.W. has taken a shine to her. He has told him stories of some of the abuse she has taken from her folks so he feels sorry for her.

Re: Mary Sunday

I thought Daniel was in love with Mary, although he would never have acted on it. He may have first noticed her because she and HW had struck up a friendship, but when HW went away, Daniel continued sort of fawning on Mary. And Daniel wasn't present at Mary and HW's wedding, which might be odd, if his liking for Mary was because of HW.

Re: Mary Sunday

"There are times when I... I look at people and I see nothing worth liking ... I see the worst in people, Henry"

I think Daniel likes children. Children are innocent, unstained and sincere. Whatever Daniel resents in people, or in himself, he doesn't see in children.

Re: Mary Sunday

I think Daniel had a strong relationship with his sister when he was young at home and this is why he shows Mary affection, because she reminds him of her and those emotions.

When he meets Henry and is getting brief updates from their home town, he specifically asks after his sister, but nobody else.

And the fact that HW took a shine to her probably contributed to his warmer than usual feelings toward her. Plus he identifies with her because she's abused by her overly religious father, which he obviously has some experience with.

He even puts a stop to the beating by threatening her father, something that is plainly implied when they're eating at the tables by the derrick and he talks to Mary as if her father isn't sitting at the same table.
