Or, they could still have cancelled the cruise to see Blair and her new boyfriendbut just have been more honest, and told her that hadn't planned anything really big this year.

Geeze take a chill pill
Not everybody like every christmas movie but that doesn't make it garbage, you want garbage check out home alone 4, now there is a train wreck staring french stewart.
The movie wasn't about conformism, it was about insecurity and thinking you want one thing when you really want something else. The cruise represented the gift that the parents thought they wanted when they couldn't get the gift of spending the holiday with their daughter (the daughter's visit was always the most important to the mother at least) The father later got the message when he made up with his neighbor and did something truely selfless. The movie was about forgiveness and coming together to help your fellow man.

Really.
Wow.
Guess I missed it on all the stink eye and peer pressure their neighbours where giving them. But cause the neighbours end up saints in the end cause its Christmas and all is forgiven.
This film could make an arguement that Christmas sucks.

Re: What a disgraceful piece of garbage
I agree with you and that's why I couldn't watch after the neighbours started bullying them. Why is Christmas spirit so important? Why can't people have a holiday away in the sun if they want? Hollywood is definitely in on the game to get people shopping up big for Christmas- buy those decorations, buy that perfect turkey, buy that even more perfect tree, buy buy buy and be sure to keep going until you suddenly get that "Christmas spirit" (i.e. after you're bullied into it).
Re: What a disgraceful piece of garbage
All I can say to your diatribe is lighten up. We watch this movie every year at Christmas time and think it's a hoot. Sorry you lost your sense of humor somewhere in life.
Re: What a disgraceful piece of garbage
I don't think this was too selfish, but maybe some. The strict enforcement was just out of control. Of course you have to understand that Luther's neighbors, friends and colleagues had looked up to him as a well-respected man for years and were shocked to learn that he just decides to skip Christmas. Now granted, they should have been disappointed at first but constantly reminding him of it day after day and rubbing it in was just like you said, disgraceful. It's like they don't even acknowledge the fact that this is only for one year and that he hasn't really changed.
As for Luther's decision, I do think it was a little on the extreme side to skip Christmas ALTOGETHER. I mean, if the intent here was to really save money, skipping Christmas and ignoring everything about it was a little too far for my taste. He could have at least decorated his house, listen to Christmas music, attend Christmas parties and dinners, invite carolers into his house and most importantly, PUT UP FROSTY. That would cost him only time and energy and little or no money.
And last of all, Nora's decision to have the party for Blair and Enrique anyway without Luther's say-so was just wrong. Since when is the wife allowed to call all the shots and make a husband's decision for him? Of course, we live in a society where women and wives have rights and all, but the husband is still in authority no matter how selfish he may be. As long as he wasn't breaking the law (he was to everyone else), he could have gone ahead with the truth. If I had been Luther, I would have at some point during the phone call spat out, 'We're going on a cruise." Then it's out there. I mean, what do you have to lose? If everyone else, including Blair, Enrique and frankly, his wife Nora, held a grudge against Luther forever, it's their problem, not his.

Re: What a disgraceful piece of garbage
Why should a person put up decorations when he does not want to?
What legal obligation does he have to do so?
By what right do his neighbours get to judge him , and pressure him to do so?
In what universe would such actions, such social pressure and condemnation be considered not only a good thing, but heartwarming.
He had no obligation to do so.
He had the right to spend Christmas however he wants.
His neighbours where goose stepping all over his rights as an individual in a so called free Country. And get to come off smelling like roses causeCHRISTMAS!

Re: What a disgraceful piece of garbage
I'm not saying he HAD to do anything. I'm just saying it would have been nice to participate in some of the Christmas traditions. But you're right. He wasn't obligated by law to do any of that. We are a free country and hopefully it will stay that way.
Re: What a disgraceful piece of garbage
THANK YOU benbigwig ! Love your post, even if it is six years old. The grown daughter Blair was just so over the top childish, she should have heard that speech a few years earlier I think

Re: What a disgraceful piece of garbage
It was supposed to be sarcastic look at exactly what you hatecommercialism. That was the point. How ridiculous all those people were/are. Did you not get that John Grisham was making fun of those people?
Re: What a disgraceful piece of garbage
We are all entitled to our own opinion but why are you reading so much into this? This is a family Christmas movie. The message of the movie was that there is nothing more important at Christmas than family and giving to others. Personally I did feel like everyone was a little harsh on Tim Allen's character. Seriously though, what kind of Christmas movie ends with parents rejected their daughter at Christmas to go on a cruise. Did you really think that was how the movie was going to end? If you hate Christmas movies so much then why don't you write a screenplay for one and see if Hollywood wants to make it?
Re: What a disgraceful piece of garbage
Its not a Christmas movie.
A Christmas movie is about hope, its about charity, its about good will.
Its a movie about a group bullies two people, into confirming. Yes , bullies with intent and after thought. And after the two are finally broken down and follow the herd.
This act of malicious where even the cops of all people got involved, is served up as Christmas Spirit good times.
Its about giving, its about love , its about sharing.
Its not about shaming and bullying people into thinking and acting how you want them to act.
