How come nobody's including Death Magnetic? Keep in mind I don't think any of their albums are bad, I enjoy them all, but of course some are better than others. My list:

To put it in better perspective, I LOVE St. Anger, just not as much as the rest. So nothing against Puppets or Kill Em All for not being near the top.
And I also usually rank my albums by where I was in my life when I first heard them, and from a musician's standpoint as well.
To add to it, I would put Garage Inc. right after Load, as it almost sounds like a real studio album, since they made all those songs belong to them.

A couple of notes: St. Anger, I do not consider a bad album although it is definitely a mediocre one at best for Metallica standards. Like many it is simply the album I enjoy the least.

Ride the Lightning I consider their finest work. it's the album that got completely overshadowed by Puppets which would also go on to overshadow the GREAT ' and justice for all' album as well. To me Lightning is the most unique album Metallica's ever released, it has a certain sound to it that I cannot define.

From best to least best:

Master (Arguments for it being the greatest metal album ever recorded are perfectly reasonable)
Lightning
Kill Em All (One of the most influential metal albums ever recorded, without a doubt)
Justice For All (and there's not a lot between those top 4, frankly - all classics)
Black
Magnetic (Some good arrangements on there, but Hetfield's shot voice kind of drags it down IMO)
Load (Great hard-rock album with barely a weak song - underrated album)
ReLoad
St Anger (Production and Hetfield's vocals - and lyrics - drag down again what were some really interesting ideas. That snareenough said).

1/ Master of Puppets - Maybe because it is the first album I heard by them back in the 80's.

2/ Kill 'em All - love the raw heaviness.

3/ Ride the Lightning - Probably a good middle ground sound wise between Kill 'em All and Puppets.

4/ Black Album - Good solid sound.

5/ And Justice for All - good songs but flat sound.

Haven't heard the other albums enough to rate them.
