Best anime of 2016

Which anime series and films do you think have been the best this year? I've fallen pretty far behind on my viewing, but out of the series I've watched all the way through, I rather enjoyed Boku Dake ga Inai Machi (even though I have some problems with it towards the end), Orange, Sakamoto desu ga?, and Konosuba (which is a great satire). The others I watched were either mediocre or quite poor.

Re: Best anime of 2016

Really enjoyed:

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu
Boku no Hero Academia
Haikyuu!!: Karasuno Koukou VS Shiratorizawa Gakuen Koukou

Liked:
Koutetsujou no Kabaneri

Kinda a weak year IMHO.

Re: Best anime of 2016

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, Yuri on Ice, and Mob Psycho 100 are probably my top 3. Mob Psycho is really great looking while still telling a worthwhile story with great characters, YoI is well-written and super entertaining, and Rakugo is downright masterpiece material. I think it has been a pretty good year, all things considered.

Why does life have to be so ironic?!

Re: Best anime of 2016

Yuri on Ice and Mob Psycho 100 are both in my queue, but I couldn't make it through Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. It just wasn't my cup of tea. I don't mind things that are slow, not at all, but it was just kind of tedious for me unfortunately. I did like the art style, though, and I appreciated that it was doing something different.

Re: Best anime of 2016

I didn't watch many new ones this year.

Hai to gensô no Grimgar. Absolutely loved that one for it's somewhat dark tone. There were a lot of series' of this kind since SoA, but I thought Grimgar stood above all the rest.

Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko: Everything Flows. Slightly better remake of the original short. Quick watch, hard to be disappointed, but not special either.

Kono subarashii sekai ni *beep* o!. Sorely disappainted with Konosuba. Starting out terryfingly and went downhill into a snore-fest quick.

Kizumonogatari: I Tekketsu-hen. The absolutely and by far worst anime film I've seen in a long time. I'm not sure how you can mess up such a premise, though it being 'ovarrated' (sorry, in lack for a better word) had to do with my disappointed.

Re: Best anime of 2016

I loved the watercolour backgrounds in Grimgar, but I wasn't overly impressed with the show itself. This genre has always been prone to some pretty weak writing, so I wasn't expecting anything amazing in that regard -- and I feel like I was right not to get my hopes up as the characters and plot were not at all fleshed out. The fanservice, in particular, seemed shockingly out of place in this show.

Re: Best anime of 2016

Haven't seen as much anime as I would have like to (mainly due to procrastinating) but I go with Boku No Hero and Kiznaiver. Only two I honestly really enjoyed this year

Re: Best anime of 2016

The Best Anime BY FAR is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable.

Re: Best anime of 2016

Of course there was also Planetarian this year. People ravingly, madly loved that series and I can see why. It wasn't for me, probably partly due to way too high expectations, but it should still be mentioned among the best 2016 animes I guess.

Re: Best anime of 2016

I really enjoyed Kimi no na Wa and Yuri on Ice (surprise surprise) but I also enjoyed BNHA (in part because Midoriya, to me, looks like the love child of Gon and Killua from HxH, but that might just be me); Haikyuu s3; Ansatsu Kyoushitsu s2; I also thought Joker Game was interesting and cool since I hadn't really seen something like that before.
Nijiirou Days probably isn't one of the best but it was entertaining and the characters were hodgepodge (which I liked) so I'm hoping for a second season.
I've really been meaning to see MP100 but just haven't got round to it yet, but judging from the response it seems well liked.
I also really liked ReLIFE (hoping for another season) and Orange but Battery was a little bit of a let down (possibly because I'd been hoping for something similar to Diamond no Ace) but the art was really nice so there's that.
I was also slightly confused and disappointed with Planetarian, but I wasn't expecting it to be what it was.

Re: Best anime of 2016

Didn't watch that many shows this year, but Hibike! Euphonium season 2 and Boku dake ga Inai Machi were the stand-outs of the year for me.

Re: Best anime of 2016

Please Tell Me Galko-chan, Space Patrol Luluco, Shonen Ashibe GO! GO! Goma-chan and Flying Witch. How about the pairings/couples from 2016 anime series?

Re: Best anime of 2016

I admit I watched Flying Witch because I love Kiki, so I was hoping it would be a little like that! It wasn't really, but it was still cute. I'd put that in my middle category for the year, which is to say I watched it and I liked it, but I wouldn't rank it as a favourite or least favourite

I'm almost through Amanchu! and will probably add that to my favourites. It's just very sweet, not to mention beautifully animated.

As for pairings, I'm not too sure. I guess I'm not really into that sort of thing! I guess if I had to pick, out of all the shows I watched last year, I would say I really liked Naho and Kakeru in Orange.

Re: Best anime of 2016

Just finished watching Yuri on Ice the other day. Good, but I definitely think people have been overlooking a lot of its shortcomings, such as:

-stereotyped characters -- for example, the Russian characters all have harsh physical features and tend to act more harshly as well.

-archetyped characters -- the underdog (Yuri), the charismatic *beep* (Yurio), the sweet kid everyone roots for (Phichit), the egocentric jerk who flops hard (JJ), the mysterious one (Otabek), et al.

-characters who aren't fleshed out -- honestly, just see above.

-animation inconsistencies -- the quality of the ice skating scenes seems to drop significantly for a few episodes. It looks jerky, almost like there aren't enough frames.

-yaoi bait -- I'm not bashing the actual relationship of Yuri and Victor, only certain aspects leading up to it. Prior to actually revealing that they are actually in a romantic relationship, the show intentionally focuses on scenes that are ridiculous in their teasing nature and come across only as a way to appeal to a specific demographic of people who enjoy explicit homoeroticism in anime/manga as a way to fuel their fanfiction fantasies. It didn't seem like real courtship in any way. Likewise, there were so many scenes focusing on the male arse (naked or not) that it was a new type of fanservice unto itself.

I feel like so many people were happy to see a same-sex relationship that they freaked out (see Crunchyroll award results, as an example) and put aside any imperfections the show had, including the fact that the very relationship itself would be considered completely unrealistic.
