Hustle & Flow : Terrence Howard ruined it

Terrence Howard was horrible in this. He acted really white and didnt give any emotion. How'd he get an oscar nomination for this. He couldn't even rap.

The movie wouldve been ok if it wasnt for him.

I'm 4 years late, but this is such a fail post. I agree with your references being important in one way or another, but none of them are great rappers. Jay-Z is the most complete rapper you mentioned due to his number of songs and he has produced some good lyrical tracks. Wayne and Drake aren't great rappers, but know how to create (or buy) catchy beats and create top 100 list songs. Cam is more in the production/beat scene as well. 50 cent is a little bit better at rapping, but is in the same boat as Wayne and Drake.

Best lyrical rappers are Biggie, Tupac, Eminem, Nas, Hichkas (if you consider other languages), Rakim, Jadakiss, Mobb Deep, Brotha Lynch, X-Raided, Three 6, Hopsin, 9th Wonder, Cypress, Snoop, hell even the Game is better. Common's H.E.R. is better than everything Drake has ever done.

You'll get a lot of West vs East coast talk, so some hate one or the other, but that's irrelevant to actual talent.

This is not the golden age for rap. There just happens to be an overabundance of rappers now, even though a lot of them have no reason to rap other than to make a profit. Personally, I liked the 90's for rap. Lots of big names and some real rap came out.

wat do u mean by he didnt really seem like a pimp?does all pimps have a special code of characters that they must follow?just because the character doesnt fit in your image that doesnt mean its not real.well, terrence worked his ass of for nearly 3yrs for this film includin staying with various pimps and interviewing them.i think he needs some credit for that and i think he was terrific in the movie.

He couldn't have been a pimp, he wasn't wearing a big ridiculous hat with a feather, didn't have a limp pimp walking cane and definately didn't have a long flowing fur coat.. this movie is flawed I tell ye!!

I think Terrence Howard was superb. He underplayed the role perfectly. It wasn't about his pimpdom, it was about the man and his music, about transcending the crap life he was leading in order to express himself. Hustle & Flow isn't a 21st Century Amos & Andy. It's a lot bigger than that. Terrence Howard got it right.

This is Terence Howard's best performance yet! I loved this movie. It was devoid of the 'prettynesss' and 'over-editing' that I think charcterizes too many movies nowadays. It was just real. For the person who thinks that Terrence Howard did not do justice to the pimp role do you think all pimps wear perms, fur coats and gold teeth? I have news for you; there are many poor ass pimps just like Djay.

This is the one movie I've seen where I couldn't picture any other actors for these parts. Terrence Howard was good in this. Not sure about the oscar nomiantion, but he acted better in this than a lot of films I've seen in a while.

Wow, I rarely reply to anything on these boards but when I saw the subject to this post I was shocked. Not only are you wrong about Terrence's preformance, but you are really off on acting talent.

I had no clue who he was before I saw this. I went in thinking it was going to be another dumb 'rapper-wannabe' movie (I was dragged there with my sister and her friends just so I could buy them tickets because I'm over 18 and they're pre-teens) but he made me take notice right away.

No emotion? Are you KIDDING ME? All of the emotion was right there on the screen.. in his face.. in his movements.. in the way he spoke.. in everything he did. His preformance was so complete and satisfying. He broke my heart. Noteably in the scene with Anthony Anderson when he visits him in jail and he's talking about what he would lie to Taraji Henson's kid if they ever asked if they could be president.

Bah I really don't understand how anyone with a heart couldn't be affected by him in the film. Really wonderful preformance. He deserved every nomination that he was given.

i'm a metal head 100%, don't really know that much about hip hop be it the culture of the music or just the basics.

but i do know music, i am a musician (not a metal guitarist, i was trained for a long time in piano) and i do know about emotion and ability to express yourself.

i know it is a movie but i thought howard really put emotion into what he rapped about (i know written for him) but he expressed what that character in the movie was feeling and going through and made you able to relate to him on a different level than from the "dirty second class pimp" image you got from the begining of the movie.

i think he acted the part great and did an outstanding job. i take my hat off to the dude.

I agree but it could be because I simply HATE Terrance Howard. He was OK in Crash but for some reason he's always him in stuff and he annoys me, I can honestly say I have no idea why. If there are any other TH haters let me know, we can get together and try to keep him outta good movies (that i admit he might contribute to). But F him anyway!

I noticed Terrence Howard way back in Dead Presidents and he stole every scene he was in and has in every film. I was excited to see him in a lead role and getting some recognition. Why you guys pissing on this guys parade? This performance was his long overdue breakthrough. He gave his role some soul. What the hell does a pimp look like? I didn't know pimps are one exact type. And his rapping was a hell of a lot better than the crappy raps you hear today. Good god rap has gone down. Howard's performance was great. I don't think he overdid anything or held back too much. It was pretty much just right for this film and character. You really can't please everybody.

Dude, his singing (rapping) was excellent. He did great in this movie, he was a phenominal actor and in this he just shined. Not all black people have to talk like Snoop Dogg use "izzle" whenever they say a single word, or weard do-rags and track suits. No emotion? He showed every emotion there is. He showed anger from when the one whore insulted his manhood. He showed determination in getting his demo done. He was humble as when he asked his neighbor to turn down his music. And did anyone feel the defeat and hurt he felt when he found his demo in the toilet? Man that scene was crushing cause you wanted him to succeed so bad. He also showed sensitivity to the girls, although he was pimping them, he treated them respectableI mean respectable for a pimp. I thought terrance howard was greatand if you don't think so, that's cool, but the Academy thought he did a damn good job and he got a Nod for it, apparently they liked this character more than his character in Crashwhich was my top movie of 05 I might add, lol.
