It being gross and animal-like was entirely the point. It was the first time he'd ever kissed Shug in the face. Maybe the first time he'd ever kissed any woman in the face. Throughout the whole film, there's this strong undertone that they're in love, but he's too much of a coward to go for it. So he goes for it, and it gets sloppy, and neither of them care because they're just so excited that it's actually happening to them. They let go of their inhibitions and just do whatever feels natural.

That's what made it so damn hot. I'll take that make-out scene over five-dozen beautifully choreographed, back lit first pecks that we always see in RomComs.

But that's passion, most of the time in movies, there's that chicken peck style of kissing and there's passionate kissing. I know plenty of people that thought that the scene was hot.

There's a LOT of kissing and love scenes that come off gross and down right animalistic. But I guess actors and directors want that sense of reality.
