Over 100 cast and crew members from Trek against Trump

https://www.good.is/articles/trek-against-trump

Star Trek has always offered a positive vision of the future, a vision of hope and optimism, and most importantly, a vision of inclusion, where people of all races are accorded equal respect and dignity, where individual beliefs and lifestyles are respected so long as they pose no threat to others. We cannot turn our backs on what is happening in the upcoming election. Never has there been a presidential candidate who stands in such complete opposition to the ideals of the Star Trek universe as Donald Trump. His election would take this country backward, perhaps disastrously. We need to elect a president who will move this country forward into the kind of future we all dream of: where personal differences are understood and accepted, where science overrules superstition, where people work together instead of against each other.

The resolution of conflicts on Star Trek was never easy. Don’t remain aloof –vote! We have heard people say they will vote Green or Libertarian or not at all because the two major candidates are equally flawed. That is both illogical and inaccurate. Either Secretary Clinton or Mr. Trump will occupy the White House. One is an amateur with a contemptuous ignorance of national laws and international realities, while the other has devoted her life to public service, and has deep and valuable experience with the proven ability to work with Congress to pass desperately needed legislation. If, as some say, the government is broken, a protest vote will not fix it.

Have you just turned 18? Have you moved? Have you never voted before? Some states have early registration (early October) and/or absentee ballots. You can’t vote if you are not registered. So make it so. Go to https://www.rockthevote.com , a non-profit, non-partisan organization, and fulfill your civic duty. Because, damn it, you are a citizen of the USA, with an obligation to take part in our democracy! Do this not merely for yourself but for all the generations that follow. Vote for a future of enlightenment and inclusion, a future that will someday lead us to the stars.

They are acting more like the Romulans in 'Redemption', vote Hillary Duras 2016

Re: Over 100 cast and crew members from Trek against Trump

This is not surprising, given the fact that 96% of Hollywood is Liberal. And I find it somewhat disturbing that George Takei would choose his LBGT+ connections over his personal history and vote for the party that uprooted and imprisoned him and his family for the crime of being Japanese. And they also
neglected the fact that as soon as JFK's challenge was completed by Apollo 11's splash down that the Democrats were at the head of the line to gut NASA.

vote for the party that uprooted and imprisoned him and his family for the crime of being Japanese.

LOL, dude, that was 70 years ago, the Democrats who made that decision are all dead and it's not like Hillary Clinton was calling for anyone to be interned. It's like saying you shouldn't vote for Republicans today because in the 1800's they supported the spoils system. Trump does want Muslims to have to register with the government and carry special Muslim ID cards, though, which is much ideologically closer to internment than anything Clinton supports. Trump more likely than not would have supported internment in WWII, if you view his rhetoric towards Muslims as the equivalent of anti-Japanese sentiment in WWII.

Plus, it's not like Republicans in the 40's (or much of anyone who wasn't a Japanese-American) were opposed to internment.

Re: Over 100 cast and crew members from Trek against Trump

Trump is a absolute train wreck.

And, your point is...?

Re: Over 100 cast and crew members from Trek against Trump

We're all screwed now. Today I'm shamed of America.

Re: Over 100 cast and crew members from Trek against Trump

I find it hard to believe that anyone who is a Star Trek fan, and views a prospective future with people like Captain Picard in positions of power as optimistic could be a Trump supporter. We need Star Trek's view of a collaborative future now more than ever.

Re: Over 100 cast and crew members from Trek against Trump

I agree. However, the same applies to being a Clinton supporter.

Re: Over 100 cast and crew members from Trek against Trump

Yeah it's not like we were given a choice between two candidates with sterling characters.

If Gene Roddenberry was alive, I'm sure he would've been leading the anti-Trump charge. I did like his original vision for the show. But the more I learned about his personal beliefs, the less I would choose him and his ideology as something I would follow. He was a secular humanist. In his interviews he basically mocked people of faith and believed that the Star Trek "future" would see humans finally divesting themselves of the "superstition" of religious beliefs.

I'm not surprised that the Hollywood left would embrace Hillary and repudiate Trump. But they should have looked a lot closer at the private behavior of their founder, Roddenberry. This way they just look like hypocrites.

In the final analysis, I was always a Trek fan even though Voyager had some fairly mediocre writing. I am tired of celebrities across the board lecturing the rest of America as though they have a special lock on virtuous behavior. Ha!

The one actor who surprises me for being a Clinton supporter is Kate Mulgrew. I know she is staunchly pro-life. I just don't get her support for a candidate who is fine with late term abortions, euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Re: Over 100 cast and crew members from Trek against Trump

Roddenberry was as much of a hyprocrite as you can get. He preached about a world where humans have overcome their greed and built a money-less socialist utopia, yet he was a VERY greedy person, who jumped at every chance to get a few extra bucks wherever he could. He wrote unusable lyrics to the Star Trek theme just to get half the royalties. He literally stole studio property and sold it to fans. He stamped his name as co-author to books he haven't written a single word into. He claimed that he alone is responsible for EVERYTHING related to the success of Star Trek, while he was surrounded by a large number of awesome creative people who made it all possible. He preached about the equality of sexes while he hired actresses just to "score" with them, and used the so-called "casting couch" method quite often. Etc... etc...

Re: Over 100 cast and crew members from Trek against Trump

Ha! Yeah I read a lot of Roddenberry's "exploits" with women. I wonder why his wife put up with it. Of course she did have steady employment in TNG!

But you remnded me of something regarding royalities . Remember the Vulcan philosophy of IDIC? There was an epsode when Spock wore the emblem.

I remember reading that Gene Roddenberry was planning to market the IDIC emblem so that's why Spock wore it in an episode. He wanted to make sure that peolple saw it and wanted to buy it.

I will always give him credit for starting what became a popular franchise. But he DID have a lot of help. It was people like D.C. Fontana and other very talented writers who put the meat on the bare bones of the original Star Trek.

Re: Over 100 cast and crew members from Trek against Trump

I sometimes think that if Gene Roddenberry were alive, he would probably support Trump more than you think. I remember several episodes and also behind the scenes that would make Star Trek not nearly as ideal future as it is credited to be, but instead that Gene Roddenberry wanted all the credit for it.

Also curious about Walt Disney, who also had an ideal future in mind.

We have heard people say they will vote Green or Libertarian or not at all because the two major candidates are equally flawed.

In 8 years or perhaps even 4 years from now, there might be many more people voting for these other political parties.

One is an amateur with a contemptuous ignorance of national laws and international realities, while the other has devoted her life to public service, and has deep and valuable experience with the proven ability to work with Congress to pass desperately needed legislation.

But Trump have many different business in other nations.

And Hillary, while true that she has devoted her life with public service, [...] some of her (or her husband's) policies I find to be controversial and even backwards.

I am not thrilled about Trump being elected. (This thread was started before the election.) But I am trying to be calm about it because I have already lost sleep from it and while I like most of his policies I am alarmed about some of his choices for his Team.

I want to buy one.

Re: Over 100 cast and crew members from Trek against Trump

Want to buy mine? 😂 Yeah, I have an IDIC pendant. I bought it years ago. You could probably find one on ebay. Star Trek merchandising got a LOT of my money, mostly because I bought a thousand Trek novels. Well, it seemed like a thousand...

Interesting take on Roddenberry supporting Trump. I wonder if he had, would the rest of the cast and crew have followed him? I doubt it. But it is an interesting thought.
