The Ice Harvest : alternate endings
Re: alternate endings
One ending is closer to the novel's ending. The other is also closer to the novel's ending, but has a short flashback.

Re: alternate endings
spoilers obviously
Right, Charlie dies in both alternate endings. In the first one it ends with him just laying there and in the second, there's a flashback to Vic, Charlie and Renata in the club. She leaves the 2 of them sitting at the bar and they talk about running off with some money.
DVD also has a pretty funny outtake of Thornton playing the restaurant scene as his character from Sling Blade.

Re: alternate endings
I personally prefer the 1st alternate ending (without the silly flashback) to the actual ending itself. The film just gets progressively bleaker and it just feels right to have Charlie die, alone, in the end.
Re: alternate endings
I agree. That's what I thought happened in the official ending. But there his head popped up. If this were an indie, low-budget art film the death ending would've stuck, I'm sure. Leave it to the executives to sugarcoat every film that sifts through Hollywood's pan.

Re: alternate endings
Well, you know a lot of endings are changed because the test audiences didn't like them, not because of what executives wanted to do. If people don't like the ending they won't see it or tell other people to see it and then the movie loses money.
Blame the "Lowest Common Denominator," the majority of American society loves its American Idol, pointless gossip about their favorite movie stars and cheesy Steven Spielberg endings. Such is life.
There's something you don't know about me Joe Rogan: I smoke rocks.
Re: alternate endings
well, maybe he did die in the official ending. his head popped up and he really was "in heaven", just like he told his drunk friend (presumably having died earlier) in the back seat of the car. heaven was having gotten away with 2 million dollars and the only person who was an actual friend.
Re: alternate endings
In the original ending, he's still alive. Without a doubt. Cause the camper just knocks him down to the ground.
In the alternates the camper knocks him down and crushes him also.

Re: alternate endings
Could someone explain why Charlie is walking in a field and then disappears in the scene after he dies? Is his spirit going to the afterlife or something?

Yeh thats the way I saw it. It sure didnt seem right for him to be walking through the field when his own car was right behind him.

Re: alternate endings
yeah that would have been a stupid ending, probably some producer trying too hard

Re: alternate endings
I love the shot of Charlie's face after's he's run over in the alternate endings. He just has this look of total resignation.
"I did all this work to get run over by a frickin' camper. Perfect."
But maybe test audiences didn't like all the blood and didn't want John Cusack dead.

Re: alternate endings
i actually liked the ending with the flashback the most.

Re: alternate endings
Yeah I agree, it just leaves everything right. Charlie deserves the money and to have breakfast with a non-drunk pete.
Re: alternate endings
"It's just so perfect. He gets away, with all the money, and takes his best friend with him. The only REAL friend he had. Since everyone else betrayed him."
Pete Betrayed him. He slept with his with and caused his divorce. I wouldn't say it's perfect. Not only does Charlie abandon his kids again, this time he takes their step father with him. Kind of Jerky don't you think?

Re: alternate endings
Actually it seemed unbelievably obvious that Charlie didn't really care that his wife cheated on him seeing the way he acts when he goes to their house and his attitude pretty much the whole movie.
Re: alternate endings
i actually liked the original ending the best. him dying would be too much, after all that dark stuff that happened. the problem with this movie is that its supposed to be funny, but all this crazy bad stuff happens and you dotn know how to react. and charlie being killed by a bump from teh camper, that would've been so over-the-top stupid. that would've been teh stupidest and most unnecessary way to die
without the original ending, it wouldve been a very, too depressing movie

Re: alternate endings
well you're half right. It is supposed to be funny but also in a noir-ish
dark kind way. And him getting killed by the camper would've somewhat ruined the movie. Instead it was funnier that it just bumped him and made him fall down. But in the book it does make more sense for him to die
"Put my flames out with gasoline."

Re: alternate endings
I am in agreement with you ellejay001.. however, we all know folks sometimes die in stupid ways.
Re: alternate endings
i liked the end of the film. just a final knock on the ass
Re: alternate endings
For me, alternative ending #1 suited the tone of the film more. Just dying alone out in the middle of nowhere.
Even though the official ending has him driving off with the money, because of the trail of bodies he has left behind you sense it won't be very long before he is brought to justice. Not sure what would happen to Pete though.
