Mary and Max : How accurate was mental illness in this film?
Re: How accurate was mental illness in this film?
In my view, it portrayed mental illness accurately, yes.
I think the animation contributed to the idea that Mary and Max take each other's bleak lives and turn them into slightly better ones. For example, the pom-Pom Mary sends Max is the only color within his black and white world, metaphorically illustrating that she brings Joy to his life

I suffer from, but treating, anxiety and depression, both of which have been labeled as severe. To me it was quite accurate, but I also picked up on the small things that relate quite strongly to these two mental illnesses. One being the 'procrastination' or presumed 'laziness' of Max. This is what I used to do with anxiety because I would have no energy left after worrying all day. Also the binge eating, and also that of 'junk' food, seems to be a common element for people with depression and anxiety.

How'd your project go?

I would like to know whether you thought this film portrayed mental illness (I.e Depression and Aspergers) accuratelly and also whether it's use of animation was important in delivering this theme.
