Need some help here from long time fans

Ok, is it just me, or were the last three episodes just meh?

I laughed a few times here and there, but overall I have been underwhelmed. So help me out here:

1. Is it just me? Am I just in a mood? or

2. has the show's writing been slipping?

3. Are Leonard and Penny just too boring as a couple?

4. Is it the fractious nature of the plot lines? or

5. are the running jokes just getting old? (Raj can't find a girl, the baby's cry, sad sack Stuart, etc)

6. Has Sheldon veered too far away from his original self?

I love this show, so why does it seem like I am actually getting *gasp* bored with it?

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

I like last night's show a lot. But the 2 prior were really not funny at all. As has been previously stated, I think a main factor is the show has been cut in half. Half the show is about Leonard/Penny and Sheldon/Amy, the other half has become Howard/Bernadette and Raj/Stuart. Finally we got at least THREE of them together for an extended period last night (Sheldon/Howard/Leonard), but that's becoming a rarity.

This baby has really grounded 1/2 the cast to Howard and Bernadette's apartment, and that humor just doesn't cut it. I like seeing Howard interact with the other guys. And Raj has become beyond useless and unfunny this year. He and Stuart feel like they are shoe-horned into the stories sometimes.

But, last night was as good as it's been in a while. Not saying it was like it was in the hey-day, but it was the best in a while.

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

I'll be watching it again tonight with my sister - I always watch twice, and sometimes on second viewing I appreciate an episode more.

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

Yes to everything. Too short, too many characters. Everything is stuck like one of those roomba floor vaccum which is stuck in a corner and keeps banging against the same two walls. there seems to be no incentive for the show to improve. It is probably realistic as far as it would be but not funny or interesting.
I don't know how it could be better given waht censorshipsucks said previously.

By the way Gothish have you watched "Riverdale" being the Archie fan that you are ?

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

I like that Roomba analogy!

And not only haven't I watched Riverdale, I hadn't even heard of it, but I will be sure to check it out - looks interesting!

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

Riverdale is great, I hope it stays around awhile, but the ratings aren't great.

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

All of the above, Goth. Honestly If this weren't a sitcom and all things held constant the writing would be on the wall for their marriage. They aren't just boring, their relationship is completely stagnant.

Sadly, I think you're right. At least last Valentine's Day they tried prancing around in Cupid outfits!

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

1. No and no
2. Yes, we're seeing recycled and cliche bits at this point
3. I'd say so, the only thing they have going for them is disagreements that end with Leonard and his "Tell me what to do, please tell me." That's sickening.
4.&5. Little from column A and little from Column B, like I said it's getting very rinse and repeaty
6. Yes he has, which isn't a bad thing, but he's become far more arrogant but also self aware, which make some of his old habits less believable since he's evolved a bit. But since he's never been diagnosed with anything the writers can just bring back a trait whenever it's convenient.

I started watching mid season 1, and I used to overlook things but it's just getting harder. I no longer look forward to new episodes but I wanna see this fcker through to the end. But it ain't just you.

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

Glad I could help. But more importantly it's good to see others who are bored or even tired or, dare I say, irritated with the show right now. I'll admit I get a little stunned when I see posts expressing actual excitement for new eppy's. Helps to vent, though.

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

"Well I don't take it black!"

"That's not even a math symbol, it's just Charlie Brown's hair."

"I may have just left my infant daughter with Patrick and SpongeBob."

"Nice try blockheads."

"Excuse me! I have a girlfriend, I'm already king of the train store."

The whole train scene at the end.

And the Penny thing did reek of foreshadowing.

I big FART

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

On second viewing, I did enjoy it more - I agree with censorshipsucks that it was better than the previous two eps.

Sheldon drawing Charlie Brown's face was great, as was the train store joke, and poor Bernadette and her leaky chest.

FACTS

This is typical and i have brought it up lots..
They ruined it.

Go watch season 2 or 3 and come back.. then judge it.

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

Hey Gothish! I just did a quick scan of some earlier episodes as a refresher and I think the difference is that the storylines now are less zany and adventurous. Instead of doing things like sneaking into an apartment to clean it, buying a time machine, or adopting a clowder of cats, the storylines are more about normal life- work and relationships/family. I still enjoy watching the show, and still find parts of it funny, but it's less free-spirited.

I'll stick by it til the end, though.

I don't think I've ever looked for frogs under my butt while I was wearing my Snow White gown.

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

The "two shirt guy" gag I thought worked well. Same with the white-board Charlie Brown. I laughed out loud a couple of times. Hadn't done that in a while. I felt it was one of the better eps of this season.
However! I still feel something is up. Sheldon living complacently in Penny's apt doesn't make sense.

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

I think that is a big part of it Lemons - too much everyday life, not enough scavenger hunts, weekend gaming marathons and robot fighting.

I will stick by it as well - I have faith that there are still some gems left in the writers' bag of tricks!

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

1. Nothing that a good bottle of wine couldn't cure.

2. I'd say you don't have the highs and lows of last season. There haven't been any episodes at the Speckerman Recurrence or Itchy Brain level (not even the premiere was THAT bad), but there also haven't been any eps that have made you watch them again. The excitement line is pretty even this year: nothing to drive you nuts and nothing to make you fall for the characters again.

3. This is definitely bad writing. (I'll pause while the haters gasp at me ripping the show.) Maybe they're trying to come up with something new, but they don't have the two of them interact very well. I don't know what it is. Johnny and Kaley have good chemistry, so I think you just have to give them some good material to run with and they haven't done that.

4. That is a definite problem this season.

5. Yes and no. Some standbys you can go to again and again and make something happen with them, but the show has felt a bit rudderless this season.

6. I don't think so. He's less insufferable but he's still on the extremes. Of course, he's had to adjust to the group and they've had to adjust to him.

Especially the first one.

And "too much everyday life" is definitely the way the show is going right now.

Re: Need some help here from long time fans

I think the marriages really ruined things. Howard is with his wife always and not Raj, raj and Howard together as a team we're always funny. They don't even have one scene together some episodes now. Plus burnedette became like a hag and only complains and yells now.
For penny and Leonard, after getting married penny is just kinda depressing and look miserable all the time. Even Leonard doesn't smile much anymore.

The main thing is the guys were great, funniest and stronger when they were a
team. Now the relationships barely have them together anymore
It became a show about nerdy geeks to relationship issues
