I like it when things like that happen.
In TV shows like Friends, characters often just stand and stare when someone says/does something funny. I get that humour is subjective, but it usually looks daft.
I don't get why some actors basically just stand there when they think the focus isn't on them. It's like they only act when they're told to, even though they should always be "on" when they're in a scene.

A lot of times when she (Penny/Kaley) laughs at something in the course of the show, it seems so natural and unforced that it seems to me that it's Kaley Cuocco laughing out of character at the jokeAnybody else ever get this impression?
Yes, this has been mentioned here before.
I think it's quite natural and endearing. It gives me (at least) the feeling that Penny really loves these guys and appreciates their friendship.
I don't find it distracting at all. It think it adds some warmth to her character.

I think most of these responses are drawn from genuine amusement from Kaley at what's going in the scene, and it makes her character more realistic and likeable.

Yes.
The look on her face when she was told to initial the relationship agreement to "accept Leonard 'as is'" was great.

I think it goes all the way back to the very first episode, especially in the car at the end when Howard is singing etc. I still think her reaction was very natural, and made it even easier to appreciate the show.

It's one of the things I find so charming about her. One of the hardest parts of acting is reacting, and laughing at something funny is natural. She can also go completely deadpan when that's warranted. Remember when she snapped Howard's ridiculous eyepatch?

yes, the show has changed quite a lot in the last few years and for the last few seasons, it seems like she is really laughing. Sometimes I wonder if she is really supposed to be laughing according to the script. The times I mean are when she is laughing just like the audience but none of the actors are laughing. :)

I have been watching the DVDs lately and I noticed the same thing. It very often seems like her laughing reactions are genuine and almost like she's about to break character. But, I think it adds something to the scene.

I too have noticed this through out the whole series. It's as if she goes into filming episodes without reading the entire script so the jokes are new to her.

I agree. I think Jim makes her actually laugh. And I recently watched the season 7 Christmas episode where the guys unfortunately donned fat-suits. Near the end when Stuart appears in the tailored suit and sunglasses, she doesn't lol but as the live audience reacts, she has a genuine look of enjoying the moment.

I am serious.. i have a lump that i have to have removed next month.
I had to wait about 3 months for an appointment here in Canada.
I know some may think it could be from other things but i am personally convinced it's from Kaley's bad acting.
