The New Edition Story : Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

All the biopics seem to show artists were horribly ripped off (TLC, NWA, New Edition, all of early Motown artists, the Chess Records story, etc.).

What the hell is with that industry that preys on talented black artists ?

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

Right! I'm quite anxious to see how things go for Brooks.it sounds like he really was here for the kids.although he did a sucky job at not reviewing their contracts and clearly his own as well.

I really want to see what happens with him. Most biopics paint everyone around the artist as leeches.so to see someone somewhat genuine I'm curious to see how his role plays out.

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

Haha. It's just a joke. I swear!

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

The artists sign bad contracts Without reading them. It's not just black artists that get screwed.

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

Who ever actually authorized and printed and delivered checks for $1.87 after the tour and their first album I hope are dead and cremated, how could such a person live with them shelf?
I don't care what costs they had to cover. That's just an insult or worse.

. Ephemeron.

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

Exactly, I mean I would be mad as hell.

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

It's just standard in this industry. Most new artist don't make that much money. They just won't admit it, especially rappers because of the image that they're trying to portray but a lot of them are even broker than they were before they got the deal. They're so excited about popping bottles, making it rain in the club and singing about fancy cars and clothes that they apparently don't take the time to read their contracts. They have all of these fancy designer clothes, jewelry and cars for these videos but what they don't tell you is that all of that crap is rented, even their houses. I remember that show called "Cribs" that use to be on MTV. They had all of these new "celebrities" walking around showing off crap that didn't even belong to them. That crap belonged to the label and then they have to pay the label out of the royalties that the label owes them. The label even charges them for stuff that they give them as gifts. Not only that but they have other little basic needs, like food, gas for those rented cars, regular clothes and personal items that come out of that money. Everything down to their socks, drawers and even deodorant comes out of those royalty checks and that's how they all get messed up. They don't realize that all the luxuries that they are enjoying on tour have to be paid back. Oh and don't let them have a family to support. They never will get out from under. It's a dog eat dog world for real. You see so many young people that would sell their soul for a record deal but I wouldn't want one if they were giving them away. It's a straight up rip off. They usually end up being overworked and extremely underpaid. I think acting may be different but singing? SMHHell no.

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

I wonder if today music artist go through the same thing. I haven't heard of Chris Brown, Rihanna, drake, beyonce, and etc getting cheated out of a check.

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

You'll find a handful of stars who are managed by their parents. Whatever shortcomings their people may have in experience is made up by the fact that most of them aren't out to rob the artists blind.

Usher,Brandy were managed by their moms at some point. Beyonce by her father.

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

You right, that can be a smart move sometimes to have your parent as your manager.

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

Artists seem to be smarter these days when it comes to that kind of thing. For instance a majority of artists have a hand in writing their music which is where the real money comes in at. And like what was said before they need to read their contracts and not sign over one that gets their songwriting royalties for instance, like some artists have done in the past.

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

Rihanna was millions in debt after one of her biggest albums. Filed for bankruptcy in 2009 .

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

You need to read WTF you are signing. Period

Re: Are there any GOOD managers, agents in music industry ?

It's really a Catch-22. There are plenty of acts that try to do it right. Get legal representation outside of the record company but then the record company may tell the act to get lost, that they'll get someone else. Or maybe they make changes to the group. I remember Toni Braxton was part of a group with her sisters. I read that the sisters thought they would record together but L.A. Reid & Babyface saw potential in her and she became successful as a solo act. En Vogue got screwed over. So did TLC. In all fairness if you don't write your own songs you have to sell a hell of a lot of records to get rich. Royalties from hits is the key to the big money. As for going broke. The filthy rich blow through money and end up broke just like the rest of us. So it's not about how much you have but what you do with it in the long run.
