Before the Music Dies : Not that great
Re: Not that great
Couldn't you just apply the same thing from Pop-stars to Rapstars? ReallyDon't see what the whining is all about, it's basically all generic nowadays.
I don't really get your second notion

Re: Not that great
Modern day rap stars usually ARE pop stars and that's the problem. I don't think there's any need to qualify it because there's no real difference. 50 Cent isn't really selling music- he's selling a complete package of pointless garbage including shoes, a clothing line, a video game, and a movie about himself.

Re: Not that great
If you could get your bigoted white head out of your bigoted white ass for just a second, and really LISTEN to what he's singing, you'd see that he does have something to say. The problem is, people like you are bigoted towards black music unless it's Motown or Stax, and you really don't care about black people, so you deny what they're saying about what's happening now due to it not fitting what you as a white person can perceive. But, what else is new?
As for the other stuff mentioned, whites do the same thing and you aren't pissed off, why is this a problem with 50 Cent? After all, he did grow up poor, he had to hustle to get somewhere, and this is the USA, which encourages this kind of thing, so why so pissy about him and this?

Re: Not that great
I dont know what documentary you were watching but i thought it was pretty good. There was one quote that summed out todays music industry; "The twenty million fans who buy britney spears albums arent music fans, theyre pop culture fans". That sums it up.

Yeah I thought similar things. Once hair metal died, and hip hop took over, it's all downhill from there. Now for those that are about to bash hair metal, at least they played their instruments to all hell. Hair metal being "overdone" is obviously the point, it was supposed to be crazy, and not taken to full seriousness! Scorpions, Dio, Maiden, those were true pioneers of their music (metal).
And were those performances supposed to make me believe in underground music? The harmonica guy with a boring song and some poorly played harmonica? A blues guy with a wife and kids who's sad cause he got dropped from his label when his record didn't sell? (oh, but other rock stars say he's good, so he must be amazing right? gimme a break) Dave Matthews screaming incoherently into a mic for 5 minutes? (which reminds me, why were DM and Erika Badhu talking about how the industry has changed, they've only been in the industry since its been in change, so how would they know?) Those kids saying hallelujah over and over while clapping? Come on seriously? Stop being fooled into liking crap.
The idea of this film is a million times better than the actual product and finally, the music industry is AN INDUSTRY. Stop crying cause you can't get a record deal cause your music doesn't sell. IF YOUR MUSIC DOESN'T MAKE MONEY, YOUR LABEL WILL DROP YOU IS IT THAT COMPLICATED?

Re: Not that great
hair metal?
you couldn't think of a better example?
early hip-hop totally destroys hair metal, it was original and it at least had artistic merit
"Dio & Scorions = pioneers"

Re: Not that great
a) I was commenting on relating to the OP about how theres very little mention of hip hop/rap and its negative effect on the music biz
b) hip hop/rap = dudes who don't play instruments, reading lyrics written by someone else, set to a beat made on a computer by some other guy, weak
c) Then who did Dio/scorps steal from? Classic rock artists? Pffff

It use to be, that a record company would invest 5 years with an artist such that even if there 1st and 2nd album released didn't do so well they would stay with them. This is true of TV. M*A*S*H didn't do well its first season and would have been dropped but they stuck with it. Same thing with Seinfeld.
I think what has changed and is that executives have become too short-sighted and often don't know anything about talent themselves so they have no belief in the projects if they don't see an immediate return. In the old days, Music Executives knew a lot about music themselves and were often former musicians.

Re: Not that great
Most modern "rappers" are pop starsthink about their music. It's incorporating the same generic club beats as Katy Perry, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, etcthey're just not rapping to it. Anymore now most rappers can't do a song on their own, either. Every song has (feat. ____&____) after it. Most hip-hop stars are pop stars, because their club, Auto-tune driven "music" falls under the umbrella of being popular.

1. Virtually no mention of hip-hop. How can you do a documentary about the decline of music without mentioning hip-hop? Pop stars arn't flooding the airwaves, it's the generic dime-a-dozen rappers. Whatever process is in place for making a pop star, that process is down to a science for hip-hop.
2. The worship of record producers of the past. They make a mention of how Bruce Springsteen's albums following Born To Run were very different artistically. What they don't mention is that if Born To Run wasn't a hit, Bruce would have lost his record contract. No matter how talented, critically well-recieved, and no matter how much potential he had to produce great art, he would have been dropped if he couldn't move records.
