John Wick: Chapter 2 : John is too likable

John is too likable

I loved the movie and the character, but John is just too morally acceptable for a contract killer. The subplot of his grief for his deceased wife and dog sort of cleanses him too much. we see him as a sentimental man with a soft heart who chose love over assassination only to be pulled back into the evil life he tried to transcend through love. That's terrific, but it means that we're rooting for John from the beginning. Even Jason Bourne is more morally dubious. Bourne DID volunteer for Treadstone, etc..

John's colleagues keep saying that John loves killing too much to retire. I wish the director/screenwriter investigated this more, because it would make John a more complex character.

In Buffy (the TV Show), Spike, who was fundamentally evil, had to go through an excruciating process of self-redemption to get his heart back. John just fell in love with a super model.

I love Reeves. I love the movie. I just think John, for all his bloody exploits, is a bit too morally sanitized. Why did he become an assassin in the first place? Maybe we need a good prequel.

Re: John is too likable

That's what makes these movies so great. When's the last time you rooted for a hero this much? The last movie I can think of where it was this much fun to watch the hero kill bad guys is die hard 1

Re: John is too likable

A big theme is honor among thieves. These hit man just keep it 100% business.

Re: John is too likable

I love the fact that we still barely know anything about him. He's mysterious and intimidating, yet very likable and human.

Re: John is too likable

Have you seen The Killer (1989)?

Re: John is too likable

no.

Re: John is too likable

I guess The Mechanic is similar.
