Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

Snowden 8.5

My films:
Strike (1925) 3/10 - It has annoying editing, and people were too. The cow scene was really sick to watch.
Prisoners (2013) 9.5/10
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) 6.5/10
Hostel: Part III (2011) 7/10
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) 3.5/10 - My worst movie of the year as of now.
The Lives of Others (2006) 2/10 - I expected that this movie is like Amores Perros or Amelie, but it's not. The cinematography is ugly, and characters were all terrible.
Safe Haven (2013) 9.5/10 - I loved the twist ending which wasn't too dark.

You can freely! But I hardly see The Lives of Others as a good film. I love movies like Safe Haven, and I'm a fan of romance/drama films.

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

I hardly see Safe Haven as anymore than corny eye-rolling trash. The twist is beyond ridiculous. The movie wasn't good before the twist either though.

The Lives of Others was an utterly facinating and well crafted film imo. Isn't a 2/10 being a bit harsh btw? You really didn't think the film was well made? You really think Safe Haven is well made?

At least we can agree about Prisoners.

None of yours this week

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

First Viewings...

-Suicide Squad (2016) EXTENDED (Nov 22nd 2016) - 6/10 (basically i think for the most part Will Smith/Margot Robbie carry it. ill see how it is on a re-watch eventually.)

Re-watches...

-The Witch (2015-2016) (Nov 21st 2016) - 6/10 (my second viewing and it held steady.)

-The Man Who Wasn't There (2001) (Nov 24th 2016) - 6/10 (was a 8/10 as of April 29th 2014.)

-Escape from New York (1981) (Nov 24th 2016) - 5/10 (while i pretty much listed this as a re-watch it might have been my first time seeing it properly and in it's entirety(?). but anyways... it was decent enough to see once but i just can't see myself wanting to re-watch it.)

-G.I. Jane (1997) (Nov 25th 2016) - 6/10

-Total Recall (1990) (Nov 25th 2016) - 6/10

-The Running Man (1987) (Nov 26th 2016) - 6/10

-Valkyrie (2009) (Nov 27th 2016) - 6.5-7/10 (was a 9/10 as of my previous viewing on March 1st 2014. it still has some solid tension at times but overall takes a bit too long to get up and moving. overall it's definitely not 9/10 worthy anymore. still, within my Top 204 movies.)

p.s. in general for me... 5/10 or less = Thumbs Down. 6/10 or higher = Thumbs Up.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

OP's....

-U Turn (1997) - 6/10 (needs a re-watch though as it's been too long since i last re-watched it)

-Sling Blade (1996) - 6/10

-Tombstone (1993) - 7/10

Moon (2009, Duncan Jones)
blu ray
This film debut from director Duncan Jones (formerly Zowie Bowie) is quite excellent and still his best film. The film is set at a mining station on the moon which is run by one man (Sam Rockwell) and his computer (Kevin Spacey). The film has a great look with fun practical effects and tells a unique personal story of the character as he discovers things about himself that is quite moving.
8/10

Yeah, it's got it's moments and i also give it a 8/10. i prefer his Source Code (2011) at this point though which i gave a 8.5-9/10. but given his rep on those two movies i kinda assume this is going to be one of the better movies of 2017... Mute (2017)

U-TURN
Oliver Stone's second worst film ( # 1 is THE HAND ). So much talent wasted in this silly, embarrassing turd. Saw this sucker once in 1997. I'm still appalled.

Spot on , rousing retelling of Wyatt Earp and Co. legend. Kurt Russell leads an ensemble that brings fresh takes to the characters. Only over length detracts.

SCISSORS ( 1991 )
Speaking of appalling, this misfired thriller stars Sharon Stone as mentally unstable woman thinks she stabs a man in self defense. But seeks out therapy to see if it was real, or all in her mind. Blandly performed by all, no real excitement, wacky plot twists, and quite boring.

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

Tombstone: One of my favorite western, loved it back in the days and still love it now. 8.5/10

Moon: I found this one very peculiar but interesting. From what I remember it was very slow paced And I don't know If I "got" all the details. Might need to rewatch. 7/10

Goon: I appreciate this one a little more on rewatch maybe two months ago. A lot of fun. 7.5/10

Star Trek Into darkness (2013 TV): i've read a lot of reviews of Star Trek fans saying that this felt like just another sci-fi movie and lacked the cleverness and the real feel. Well I never watched the show but I can confirm that it really is just another sci-fi movie and not a good one at that. The acting is weak plus there's two actors I've only seen in comedies before so it takes some of the credibility away. I didn't care for any of the emotional drama nor the "intense" dialogues and the action was uninspired and not impressive. Yet, I remember liking the first one. With its length, this one was quite a chore to sit through and having to watch egg Benedict Cucumberbatch's face (when it was not being punched by Cpt Kirk or Spock) was also painful. At one point I started surfing the IMDB boards during the film. The last 20 minutes was the best part and offered some good special-effects but nothing worth everything that came before. I'd rather watch any transformer movie before re-watching this. 4.5/10

Hardcore Henry (2015 DVD): This was a blind buy. And a great one. It says "one of the best action movie ever" on the cover and you know what, I think it might be! It's very intense, ball's out crazy, surprisingly original and a real crowdpleaser for all the gamers. A lot of the characters and scenes reminded me of some of the GTA games. Other times it reminded me of call of duty. You'd think that watching a movie that is like a video game would get boring and just make you want to actually play a game but this is so much more than that. The stunts are great, the special effects did the job, the story keeps you hooked and the first person was used perfectly so everything that happens feels very reel. It's a very entertaining blast, non-stop action movie. Ultra violent too! Breakdown: cinematography: 9/10 (Go Pro only!)
Acting: 8/10
Story/dialogue: 7.5/10
Music/sound effects: 7.5/10
Action/violence: 9/10
OVERALL: 8.2/10

Incendies (2010 DVD): I like all the French Canadians actors involved and I am proud of their job in this. Normally I prefer Remy Girard when he's doing funny stuff like Les Bougons or La petite vie but he was solid in his role as the notary. (I know it must be hard to imagine because he look so serious in this but this guy is very talented) But I'm even more impressed by all the rest of the cast. I don't know why I waited so long to watch this. I guess I had to be in the right mood to face this kind of movie. Not only it is very dark but it draws you into a sick story set in a sick world. And it charges powerful emotions through so many details with striking simplicity. To be honest I kind of wished that the cinematography would've been a little lighter and brighter at times because it's very sober, grey and gloomy. A little sunshine here and there would've made it a bit less depressing. To me, that was the sole and unique flaw from this masterpiece. The soundtrack's great and that song when the credits rolled in was wonderful. Breakdown: cinematography: 7/10
Acting: 10/10
Story/Dialogue: 9.5/10
Music: 9/10
OVERALL: 9/10

There will be blood (2007 blu-ray): I heard a lot of praises and positive comments about this movie and it backed them all up. Daniel Day Lewis is formidable and there is something about this guy's eyes. They have the intensity of those of an alcoholic. You know what I mean?
Breakdown:
Cinematography: 10/10
Acting: 9/10
Story/dialogue: 7.5/10
Music: 7.5/10
OVERALL: 8.5/10

The Final Girls (2015 blu-ray): I loved the concept of this movie. Such a great idea and it was exploited perfectly. The whole crew had fun shooting this movie and it seeps through the screen. Good chemistry and good energy all over. I enjoyed the sunny and flashy look a lot. Except for two mother-daughter scenes that were too long for my taste the film unfolded real nicely. Only low point would be the killing/stabbing scenes. They were not explicit and awkwardly quick. Breakdown:
Cinematography: 8.5/10
Acting: 7.5/10
Story/dialogue: 8/10
Music/sound effects: 8/10
Action/violence: 7/10
OVERALL: 7.8/10

Ride Along (2014 DVD): This an average action-comedy with two actor that I like and the least I could say is that it held up on rewatch. It pretty much goes by the book and offers nothing outstanding. There is a few good laughs and it's fairly enjoyable overall.
6/10

Ride Along 2 (2016 DVD): We find the same characters and they have not evolved much since the last movie so we get the same formula all over again. Hart's character had to prove himself worthy in the first movie and in the sequel, Cube decides it was just a lucky shot so he has to prove himself again. How original. As for a buddy-cop film, it always comes down to the same things: you need a bad guy we love to hate, some good shooting scenes, at least one car chase no more than three and some good jokes. If you're going to release a big budget movie in 2016, better make sure that all these simple aspects are at least solid. I really don't understand how this movie managed to pretty much fail on all these levels. The cinematography was not bad and like I said. I like the actors. I always enjoy seeing Ken Jeong, so that was a plus. I may criticize the movie a lot but I did not hate it, there was a few good parts but it's just inexplicably disappointing. 5/10

Excuse my English, I am French-Canadian

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

Star Trek into darkness - worst of the new trek films , 4.5/10

There will be blood - Paul Thomas Andersons masterpiece, in my top 50 , ddl is great in these intense roles, I know what you mean 9/10

Final Girls - fun stuff, nice spin on the genre 6.5

In Cold Blood : 7.5

Goon : 6.5

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

Hey Petey

I've seen both of yours but too long ago to really comment i'm afraid

Hi, Dark

I've been meaning to watch Snowden.

Yours:

U-Turn 4.5/10

Didn't like it when I saw it. I don't know, it felt too over the top.

Infamous 7.5/10

I liked it. Maybe it's a bit bland. Yeah, Toby Jones was great. I loved Gwyneth Paltrow cameo at the begining.

Tombstone 7.5/10

I remember enoying it. And, yeah, Val Kilmer was great as Doc Holliday.

Moon 9/10

Loved it. I found it very moving too. Sam Rockwell was amazing.

Capote 6/10

I was tired when I saw it, I found it very difficult to watch it and geti into it. I thought Philip Seymour Hoffman was great though.

Mine:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 7.5/10

I enjoyed it, not that much at the beginning maybe, but then in the seocnd half, i t was really fun. The creatures and the effects are great. Loved Colin Farrell too. Johnny Depp's cameo was cool. I thought Eddie Redmayne was a bit weak in the lead though.

Avalanche Express 5/10

It's a movie with Lee Marvin and Robert Shaw, about a CIA agent who has to help defect and escape the head of the KGB. It's kind of a mess, Abraham Polonsky wrote it, so I thought it would have been better. But I read that Robert Shaw died during filming, and he was the co-lead really, so that obviously contributed.

Paris When It Sizzles 8/10

It's a movie with Audrey Hepburn and William Holden, it's about a typist in Paris who goes to work for a screewriter who has two days left to deliver a script, and he hasn't written anything but the title. I really liked it, it's really funny, I thought it was quite smart too. You follow both the main story and the one they're writing, and the two mirror and influence each other. It's good.

Sing Street 7.5/10

It's from the director of Once. I liked it, the cast is good, but, I don't know, it felt a bit predictable, IMO. I liked Once more.

"May Fortune favor the foolish"

Re: Hi, Dark

Hey Billy!

I agree U Turn is very over the top, you either have to go with it or you wont get int it.. fair call

I have Val Kilmer as the best of the many incarnations of Doc Holiday, he truly is a great actor, perhaps underrated in general.

YOURS

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - ill get to it evntually i suppose.

Paris When It Sizzles - sounds interesting, im actually watching The Audrey Hepburn Story (mini series) now

Sing Street - i don't think ill like this, despite having heard some good reviews, one friend only liked the beginning though and then found it very predictable also.

Paris When It Sizzles feels very modern, IMO

I actually have the feeling Tarantino loves it, there are a lot of movie references.

The mini series about Audrey Hepburn, I don't think I ever saw it.

It's this one?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0163887/?ref_=nv_sr_2

Yeah, I heard all these stories about Sing Street being a new classic, but really, I don't see it. I enjoyed it, there are some cool 80s songs, but I don't know, beyond that...

"May Fortune favor the foolish"

Re: Paris When It Sizzles feels very modern, IMO

yup that's the one! I remember it coming out and being put off by Hewitts casting but she isnt so bad so far

Yeah, I'm not sure about that casting either

But, actually, I wouldn't know who to pick to play Audrey.

"May Fortune favor the foolish"

Re: Yeah, I'm not sure about that casting either

Its a funny world when U Turn is pretty much a retelling of Red Rock West with Nic Cage from a few years earlier but the Sean Penn film is the over the top one of the two :)

I actually like Red Rock West

I never figured they had the same story, but yeah, they kind of did.

Nicolas Cage wasn't that over the top in it.

"May Fortune favor the foolish"

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

Hi DarkSide. Again I haven't seen any of your movies, I have a lot of catch up to do it seems. :)

Repeat movie viewing

The Goonies (1985): one of my favorite childhood movies so I was curious how it would held up revisiting it about two decades later since I last viewed it. I still enjoyed it, but it was not as exiting as I remembered it. The bad guys were really stupid and the traps were not as menacing as I remembered them. Still had to give it a 7/10 for nostalgic reasons.. ;)

First time viewing

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016): what a colossal mess! The only positive thing was Ben Affleck as Batman and the new suite. The rest of the movie did not made any sense to me: why was Batman killing dozens of people in this movie? Where the hell did that woman come from? Who was that Luther kid and what were his motives? It was very boring and a total letdown. 4/10

22 Jump Street (2014) funny but not as good as the first one. Giving Ice Cube more lines is always a bad idea.. The middle act of the movie was boring but the final act was great, except that awkward fight scene between Jonah Hill and that girl. Hilarious end credits as well. 6/10

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) AWESOME! Yes it is two hours of one unrealistic big car chase but once I saw that truck with the guitar player; I was literally screaming *beep* yeah!" to the screen.. Excellent cast, excellent special effect and the absolutely most insane cars I have ever seen. Rock on! 8/10

Hellboy (2004) The main character looked excellent and Ron Perlman does a good job. But the script was boring, it lacked action and the romance sub-plot was cringe worthy to watch. A mediocre 5/10 fro this one.

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

Hey!

The Goonies (1985): well I don't suffer from nostalgia and still find this film to be great! 7.5

First time viewing

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016): I thought there were 2 big positives, -affleck as batman and gal gadot as Wonder Woman 5.5/10

22 Jump Street (2014) funny but not as good as the first one 6/10

Mad Max: fury road (2015) the action was fun but the film has very little else going for it 5.510

Hellboy - didn't overly care for either of these 5:10

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016): I thought there were 2 big positives, -affleck as batman and gal gadot as Wonder Woman 5.5/10

The acting of Gal Gadot as Wonder woman was fine, I just wished they spend more time explaining the character! I haven't read the comic books so for me it was a complete mystery who she was and why she suddenly was there to help fight. There were some hints dropped but I didn't understand it. Perhaps the Wonder Woman movie will do a better job.

Mad Max: fury road (2015) the action was fun but the film has very little else going for it 5.510

Your certainly right there but I don't think the film wanted to be more then just a fast paced over the top action movie. They could explained the characters a little more, but I think this approach worked fine.

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

Oh yes the wonder woman film will be the place for explanations for her and from the trailers it looks pretty great so far.

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

In Cold Blood (1967, Richard Brooks)
I've been meaning to see Capote again being a huge fan of Miller nowadays, might also see this as a companion piece as you've done here.
6.5/10

Sling Blade (1996, Billy Bob Thornton)
Agreed.
6.5/10

Moon (2009, Duncan Jones)
One of the best modern scifis for sure.
7.5/10

Capote (2005, Bennett Miller)
Needs a rewatch, soon.

MINE

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) cinema
David Yates
The film takes place in the same world as Harry Potters and is based on J.K. Rowling's book of the same name from 2001, the film's screenplay is also by Rowling. It tells a story from 1940's New York where the city is on alert due to a series of strange incidents. I really enjoyed the film, it has fantastically quirky characters as was expected, a lot of heart, and the script positively meanders and stays on things that are not that essential to the main plot (maybe because this is a novelist writing a screenplay) which makes the film richer. To a fan of the Harry Potter books, it's about a time and events you've heard of before, here we have a focused look. There's also a twist at the end concerning a familiar character who unfortunately feels horribly cast, but obviously the jury's still out on that one. In a nutshell, this is first and formost a feel good movie with dark patches, and I'd rate it higher than any of the Potter-films that were pretty good but not much more for me despite being a fan of the "british royalty" adult-cast and the Columbus-films capturing the feel of the books rather perfectly. The ending in Fantastic Beasts feels just perfect and it got a good amount happy sounding murmur from the audience in my showing.
7.5/10

The Nice Guys (2016) blu-ray
Shane Black
The new L.A. noir from Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (2005), The Last Boy Scout (1991, screenplay)) doesn't disappoint but it didn't absolutely wow me either. A tongue in cheek cop story with that impeccable retro L.A. look. Good stuff.
7/10

Ride Along 2 dvd
Tim Story
A throwaway buddy-cop comedy that doesn't have that much going for it, but it's an easy mildly entertaining watch.
5/10

Rewatch

The Sopranos (1999) season 1 dvd
One of the most influential shows of all time, the grandfather of the television boom we're having at the moment. An intellectually interesting, exciting and even comic look on what it takes to run a mafia-family in turn of the century New Jersey.
Highly Recommended

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

1. How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966) (TV) been too long
2. Santa Clause Comin' to Town (1970) (TV) pretty sure I have sene this too forever ago
3. Jaws (1975) 9/10 still Spielbergs best made film

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

Well if you are gonna watch capote and in cold blood again you should certainly watch Infamous with them as I did

Shooter - yeah it was fine for a once off 5/10

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

I didn't realize Infamous is another In Cold Blood film. Thanks for pointing that out

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

Yeah it was in production at the same time as Capote pretty much.. a lot of people prefer Infamous but I think there is a trade off between the two films that makes them about even in the end. Capote with the better direction and overall aesthetic and Infamous with the more interesting screenplay and more three dimensional lead. They focus on different aspects as well so they are quite easy to watch back to back

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

In Cold Blood (1967) - seen several years ago, but a couple of weeks ago I've seen a video on YouTube on how actors prepared for accents in various films. Hoffman as Capote was given as an example and I was impressed at first and decided to see the film. He was very good, very sad to see him go so soon

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

Yours:

Moon: 8/10 - Quality movie

Goon: 4/10 - couldn't quite get into this one, might give it a second chance before the sequel comes out

Haven't seen the rest

Mine this week (all FTVs)

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (2009) - 6/10 - some good family fun

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013) - 7/10 - preferred this to the first, few more laughs

No Escape (2015) - 7/10 - Good watch, tense when it needed to be. Didn't like Brosnans horrible accent he was putting on in it though

The Devil Wears Prada (2006) - 6/10 - Not usually my type of movie to watch but was pretty decent & Meryl Streep put in a quality performance

Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) - 6/10 - Good quality comedy, maybe expected a little bit more from it, given it's a classic comedy & the Steve Martin/John Candy double act. Was still a good watch though.

Maniac Cop (1988) - 7/10 - Didn't expect much from this, but it delivered in quite a surprising way. Would recommend

Monster (2003) - 9/10 - Bravo Charlize Theron

The Accountant (2016) - 8/10 - Very enjoyable watch., one of the better movies I've seen from 2016 so far

I'll check Maniac Cop 2 out if I can find it to buy anywhere

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (21/11-27/11)

I have all three maniac cops on blu ray, the third one was hampered by production interference but is still ok even though a step down from the first two.
