Re: When will this be on DVD?
I know what you mean.
I guess it`s a symptom of todays `Need it Now` media culture that as soon as I`ve seen the trailer i want to see the movie.
Also I guess independents have to do as much as they can to promote the movie just to find a distributor which leads to teasing us for 2 years with an already completed movie.
Quite frankly at this point I wish they hadn`t released the trailer because with so much anticipation for the movie, it will likely never deliver on the great promise of the trailer that I`ve been building.
I guess we need to be patient but fair`s fair, it would be nice to know if this is ever going to be released so I can get on obsessing about something else. A short word from the filmakers would go a long way. Their website really needs to be organised properly. You`d think that blogs and online marketing would be almost automatic these days given that Blair Witch / Snakes on a Plane have proved that the internet can hype your movie beyond it`s means. You`d think they`d give it a bit more of a push.
so, to some up.
Gimme, I want it now.

Re: When will this be on DVD?
I just received word (I worked on the film) that it will be in theaters in Great Britain starting in November 2006 and in the US in either March or April of 2007.

Re: When will this be on DVD?
sorry i forgot we're all so much better than video
Re: When will this be on DVD?
yes Video. As a DVD is a Digital VIDEO Disc. lol, I do appreciate sarcasm, but I appreciate it even more when it backfires on the one using it. No real point to this point. I'm just trying to find out when its coming out like the rest of you.
Re: When will this be on DVD?
Er. it Digital Versitile Disc, actually.

Re: When will this be on DVD?
o.k. everyone-i'm only going to explain this once..!(heh heh heh!)
lopekal-
sorry to disapoint you, but the earlier post was indeed correct. the original 1984 acronym DVD was "digital video disc"; video is a noun-and versatile is an adjectivethe current use of "versatile" is a made-up name and was coined by sony, as i recall, only around 5 or 6 years ago to reflect the growing interactive functions on the commercial discs.
or to put it another way: you wouldn't think to say that your favorite movie was shot on hi-def versatile, would you?

Re: When will this be on DVD?
WTF.
Laughed hard at this post
"the original 1984 acronym DVD was "digital video disc"
Considering that CDs were still new tech at that time how does this acronym have anything to do with a media not yet invented?
"video is a noun-and versatile is an adjective"
Video as used in the term "Digital Video Disk" is an adjective.
"the current use of "versatile" is a made-up name and was coined by sony, as i recall, only around 5 or 6 years ago"
The name has been "Digital Versatile Disk" since 1995 when the "DVDs" we are now referring too were just starting to get produced. Thats over 12 years ago.
"to reflect the growing interactive functions on the commercial discs."
DVDs were never conceived as a video only format they were developed as a successor to CD which had long been a format of choice for computer software and music, Hence the name "Digital Versatile Disk" which meant it had many uses.
"or to put it another way: you wouldn't think to say that your favorite movie was shot on hi-def versatile, would you?"
Who shoots movies on DVD besides maybe your mom and dad with their handycam? Really bad movies are made this way And just to examine the point you were trying to make, would you say "they shot it on hi-def video" as if video or versatile is supposed to be a media.
The correct meaning of the acronym DVD, has been "Digital Versatile Disk" as long as the media has been around. Its completely understandable and a common mistake if you thing the 'V' stands for video but it doesn't and it never has.

Re: When will this be on DVD?
synapse-
after reading your post, i realise that i had indeed been incorrect with a few details-thanks for correcting it. obviously i played fast and lose with some of the details; let me try it this way:
buti still stick with my basic statement that dvd originally stood for video disc, not versital disc. when i wrote that: "the original 1984 acronym DVD was "digital video disc",
you wrote: "Considering that CDs were still new tech at that time how does this acronym have anything to do with a media not yet invented?"
well, actually they were, sort of.-but you've got a good point, and the incorrect date is one of my screw ups.
but you have to remember that dvd as such was a development based on the earlier laserdisc format, and those lasers in various forms were around since the mid sixties-and in comercial production since 1981. they were refered to as the "Reflective Optical Videodisc System", hence my position that video disc came before versitile disc.
DVD's themselves, originally used an initialism system carried over from the laserdiscs, also were called "digital video disk", and it was then decided to officially stand for "digital versatile disc" only at the time of the 1995 specification finalization with the manufacturers.
as for the rift between versitile being a noun and/or an adjective, you said: " you say "they shot it on hi-def video", as if video or versatile is supposed to be a media{?}. Who shoots movies on DVD besides maybe your mom and dad with their handycam? Really bad movies are made this way"
hmmmi do believe a few filmakers just might want to disagree with you on that one. in the last few years, several high profile films were shot using hi-def video, to wit: david lynch's inland empire; lucas's star wars I-III; david fincher's the prestigeto name just a few.
so we're both right, it seems, for different reasons.

Video is not a media, therefore you can't shoot anything ON video. You can shoot something IN high definition video but that doesn't mean the same thing as on it. Video is a format not a media. DVD is a media.
When they say that something is shot in high definition, that means they used high definition film not a DVD disk or even MPEG2 video which is DVD format. They never say they "shot it on high definition video" because that makes no sense.
Just FYI major film productions are never filmed in a digital format at all. To film something in digital almost always means that you are using compression right at the source so therefore losing quality. The best results are always achieved by using a large "high definition" film and then later doing the transfer to a digital format such as DVD.
So basically shooting something ON something means you are referring to a physical media such as film.
Shooting something IN something means you are referring to a format such as high-def video.
You said ON so you are wrong. All movies are shot on film just like they always have. It's just the size and quality of the film that is different. When they say something is "high-def" they are referring more to the transfer to the media that you end up watching than anything else.
Contrary to what you might think, shooting something directly to a digital format is an inferior way of doing it. That is exactly why many professional photographers refuse to switch to digital cameras.

damn! you got me on that one! semantics, it gets me in trouble every time; point to to you on that.
but in a verrry lose way, you understand what i was getting at-don't i get brownie points for that? :)
i did note that you didn't address my original historical position of video versus versatileyour thoughts?
sorry to ask, but no matter what your feelings on the matter, one way or the other, it's a pleasure to run into someone who has a brain and isn't afraid to use it; fire away.

Re: When will this be on DVD?
Geeze fellows - just pull them out and put them on the table and we'll see who has the bigger one. After that, maybe the thread can revert to 'When will this be on DVD?'

Sin City, the Star Wars prequels, etc. were shot in high definition on video. You are right in that the quality is inferior at the source but that doesn't mean it isn't being employed in major productions.

Semantics aside, if it's being recorded to tape (not film), it's being shot on video.
"High-Def" doesn't refer to film. Film can obviously be transferred to a high def format like Bluray, however.

Re: When will this be on DVD?
Frank! Good news. Thanks for the update.
Re: When will this be on DVD?
On DVD March 05 2007 in the UK, by Revolver.
Re: When will this be on DVD?
I don't believe it is possible to over-hype 'Special'. After viewing the trailer like 20 times I went into seeing it at a film festival with extremely high expectations and I was still very much blown away by it. The dialogue is so polished, the pacing is perfect, and it is a very intelligent film that works on so many levels.
Re: When will this be on DVD?
it is on torrent and warez sites for months

Re: When will this be on DVD?
A while back, I wanted to get Cannonball Run I&II on DVD, which were not available. So, a little Interneting got me copies from overseas (Hong Kong, I believe). The covers are in Mandarin and English is not the primary language on the discs, but it works fine. I am ready to do it again, not even caring if the makers get their cut. It is rediculous to wait this long to catch a movie!

Re: When will this be on DVD?
I have looked in two videostores, but still can not find "Special." I wish I could see the whole movie or at least more than the trailer of Special.

Re: When will this be on DVD?
Picked up a DVD copy of this one for just a buck at a local Dollar Tree in Central New Jersey.
Woody Anders is the birthday man/ Hey Laddy Laddy La / He does it because it's his jam/ Hey Laddy Laddy Lo
Woody Anders is the birthday man/ Hey Laddy Laddy La / He does it because it's his jam/ Hey Laddy Laddy Lo
When will this be on DVD?
So thus I have started the familiar thread game of when will this be on DVD?
Does anyone know?
Will the creators behind the movie step forward and reveal the big plan?
One can only hope.
I have watched the trailer too many times in anticipation to not see this movie.
There is a great lack of inventive creative films out there and making me wait for this one is cruel.
Sincerely
