Best and Worst : Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Movies are usually so good that you want to rewatch again, sometimes immediately. But sometimes, there are movies which you know is good after you watch, but is too strong or too depressing to be watched again soon.

Any movies come to mind?

Top of my head, for me are:

Room
Grave of the Fireflies
American History X

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Nightcrawler for me.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Requiem for a Dream and Nightcrawler are films on my watchlist which I'll get to when I get the time to sit down. I read that Requiem is one of these possibly-watch-once-only movies, but thanks for the possible heads up on Nightcrawler.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Ya, the one on my watchlist that I am a bit intimidated by is A Clockwork Orange (1971). I am kinda guessing it will be in the watch once category for me, though I know I really need to experience it.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

A Clockwork Orange for me an example of a highly rated film which I have not really managed to finish because I could not see the point. Maybe it's just me so hope you enjoy it once you get round to watching it.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

The Breakfast Club always seemed like one of those films you only need to watch once. Great movie though.

really?

i think that's got solid re-watch factor going for it. in fact, for me it's one of the very top movies of that teen themed type of movie.

movies that have no re-watch value are ultimately a Thumbs Down from me as truly good movies should be movies you want to re-watch from time to time as the years pass.

now this i doubt has happened for me.

but with that said... i can tell some movies work best on initial viewing but the thing is i generally know whether something is worth re-watching or not when i first see it and go from there.

basically...

-movies i re-watch cannot score below a 6/10 (Thumbs Up)
-movies i won't re-watch(or won't re-watch anymore) cannot score above a 5/10 (Thumbs Down)

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

This has happened a few times for me. Movies which I know is good, but I can't rewatch.

This excludes movies which I know were just pointless or not worth rewatching.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Lord of the Rings.

but is too strong or too depressing to be watched again soon.

The Mist.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Requiem for a Dream. I rate it 10/10 because it really hit me like a concrete wall when I watched it over ten years ago. But I don't want to experience it again. The funny thing is that even after all this time, I still remember the movie exactly scene by scene.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Good choice, I expected someone to mention the movie. As I mentioned in a reply above, Requiem (along with Nightcrawler) is on my yet to see watchlist. I'll be sure to be well prepared mentally to watch Requiem based on your account.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Good idea to be prepared to watch these kind of movies. I recommend to see it on an afternoon and plan something fun in the evening. Or watch it with somebody so you can talk about it after it's over. But you can never know if and how a movie will affect you.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Irreversible (2002).

Not great, but definitely good.

And no way in hell I'd ever watch it again.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

I've only seen 'Shawshank Redemption', 'Interstellar', and 'The Godfather' trilogy once each because they took a toll on me. I fully intend on watching them again, but I'm a guy who can rewatch movies within several months. These movies I don't rewatch for several years.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Thanks for sharing your views. For me Shawshank and Interstellar are dark, but somehow the bright light at the end of the tunnel seems to be more prominent, so I don't have issues watching them. The rape scene from the sisters always stay in my mind though it's scary and even scarier since only shown in shadows. With the Godfather trilogy, the violence IMO seem to be appropriately shown and in line with the storyline so don't have too much issues rewatching.

But yes, similar with others, I'm glad to read that I am not alone in admitting, many films, whilst we acknowledge are good, takes a toll on our minds.

OT but looking at your nick and sig, films that are highly watchable for me includes the Lethal Weapon quadrology (correct?), especially LW1 & LW2. And stands the test of time.

For sure, some movies are meant to do that, too. Emotional and mental tolls are just another part of being an audience member; if one doesn't admit that, one probably is lying or else hasn't watched the right movies.

Oh yes, Lethal Weapon is pretty much my favorite action movie of all time, second only to Die Hard. I love all four movies; definitely highly watchable and stand the test of time.

Re: Good/ Great Movies You Can Only Watch Once

Thanks for sharing your views. FYI Oldboy, I have but can't bear to watch; The Elephant Man, I agree is depressing, still remember him and his death-bed; and Room, as per mentioned above.

Too saddening is your reason to not watch them?

Too saddening, too sickening, too depressing, pointless to rewatch since you know the endings or any other reasons. But basically movies which you acknowledge as good or great but you cannot rewatch again. Not for awhile anyway.

The replies given so far shows good examples of these from the perspectives of the forum members.
