Loved The Conjuring 2 and think it's the best yet of it's series.

The Purge: Election Year was pretty good and I quite enjoyed it, but I think Anarchy is probably the overall best of the series thus far. Both Anarchy and Election Year are good sequels though and IMO far better than the first.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

Friday the 13th - part 7
Halloween - either of Rob Zombie's versions.
A Nightmare On Elm Street - original
Saw - original
Scream - original
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - original
Alien - Prometheus
Predator - Predator 2
Phantasm - Phantasm 4
Evil Dead - Evil Dead 2
Hellraiser - Inferno
Child's Play - original
Final Destination - original
Paranormal Activity - Paranormal Activity 2

Some others worth mentioning:

The Excorcist 3. One of the most underrated horror movies ever. William Peter Blattey wrote the novel, screenplay, and directed this masterpiece.

The entire Prophecy franchise. Hard to even pick a favorite from these films.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

Exorcist and Prophecy are really good additions, good call.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

Halloween - the original
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - the original
Night Of The Living Dead - the original

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

Those all you've seen?

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

Friday the 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street: I think the best movie in both series (though it helps if you've seen a lot of films from both series first) is "Freddy Vs Jason". However, individually I'd pick....
Friday The 13th - Part VI: Jason Lives
A Nightmare On Elm Street: Part IV: The Dream Master

Halloween: I know it's weird, but I actually probably like Halloween 3: Season Of The Witch the best. I love that film and I like how crazy it gets. It feels properly like a sci-fi John Carpenter film.
Halloween films featuring Michael Myers: Halloween II

Saw: The first "Saw". I loved Danny Glover most in this and felt they could have done with his presence in the sequels.

Scream: None. Didn't even like the first one. Not seen any others than the first one though.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The first "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" from Tobe Hooper. Absolutely wonderful film and, while utterly horrifying, still keeps Hooper's sense of fun. (He actually thought it was funny. Edit: I originally wrote he thought it was terrible. Bit of an odd typo, but yeah clearly not true.)

Alien: Obviously I'm going to pick "Aliens", but I do have a lot of respect for "Alien 3" and there have been times when I'd say "Alien 3" was the best. Alien 3 brings together the concept of the alien as the child Ripley actually has an opportunity to raise having missed the chance to raise her own daughter and having lost her substitute child in Newt. Alien 3 also brings back the isolation from the first (very dated and much poorer paced) Alien film. But everything I like about Alien 3 needs the more upbeat and exciting Aliens to make it work.

Predator: Not particularly keen on any of them, but definitely the first Predator. I think it drags in the first half, but the second half where Arnie finally works out how to take down the baddie gives the film a real shot in the arm.

Phantasm: I have an odd choice for this one: "Phantasm III: Lord Of The Dead". The whole series has a sense of fun, but none of the movies is more explictly a horror-comedy movie than Phantasm III. The badass black female character straight out of a blaxploitation flick is a really great addition and I just had SO much fun with this one. I still really enjoy the first Phantasm though and I think Phantasm IV is one hell of an exciting cliffhanger for the series. Phantasm II I actually think is a bit muddled and I found it harder to enjoy than the others.

Evil Dead: "Evil Dead 2". I know Army of Darkness is a lot of fun, but Evil Dead 2 is just so incredibly creative as well as funny. (I'm really not keen on the tree-rape in the first one being played for comic effect.) I like the remake too. :)

Hellraiser: "Hellbound: Hellraiser II" I thought the first one was crazy as hell, but the sequel seemed to me more imaginative, better paced, and it emphasised the evil stepmother theme more explicitly. I also liked that we got a new insight into the world of the cenobites too. I haven't seen any Hellraiser movies beyond number 4.

Child's Play: "Bride of Chucky". At a point where the series was really losing its edge they bring in Tiffany and she is a WONDERFUL character. The chemistry between Chucky and Tiffany is fantastic and, as a big fan of horror-comedy, this is a personal favourite. I have a soft spot for "Seed of Chucky" too and I thought "Curse of Chucky" had its moments. The only Chucky movie I really don't like it "Child's Play 3" where the filmmakers seem to go soft in the third act. (You've replaced all the paint guns with real guns. We're reading for all hell to break loose! Then barely anyone gets shot? Give me a break!)

Final Destination: "Final Destination 2" much more fun than the first movie, using a great action sequence at the start to set up the film. I like how in this film the deaths really do feel like they could be coincidence, unlike in the first movie where death seems to be prepared to break the laws of physics. As I said before, horror-comedy fan here. I also love the fourth movie for the way it takes out the racist character in particular. Not so keen on the third one, but REALLY not impressed by the fifth. (Gymnastics sequence in the fifth movie is awesome though.)

Paranormal Activity: None. Seen the first one. It's terrible.

REC: "REC". Seen all four. The first one is brilliant. I actually really like what they do with the series in the second. I had fun with the third. The fourth at least ties things up, but it's probably the weakest of the whole series.

Ring: I'm actually going to pick "Ring 2" (the Japanese sequel). I really like how it moves into more interesting imagery and the way it expands on the mythology. The first film had to follow the book and the mystery unfolded rather slowly. After the great climax of the first film, the second movie really gets to play with the themes and the characters (particularly after the attempt to strictly adapt the second book with "Rasen" completely bombed). Not at all keen on the first American movie, but I think the second American movie is incredibly underrated. Really looking forward to "Sadako Vs Kakayo".

Ju-On/The Grudge: "The Grudge". I've only seen the ones with "Grudge" in the title. Didn't much enjoy the first "Ju-On: The Grudge", but really liked the second. The two American movies seem to be adapting that first "Ju-On: The Grudge" movie only with better effects and more sensible pacing. I think the American sequel has its problems, but the first American "The Grudge" genuinely got under my skin and that's why its my favourite. Keeping on the original Japanese director was a good idea and I'm glad he kept the Japanese setting with American characters baffled by the cultural setting and acting as an 'in' for western audiences.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

If you didn't like the original Scream you won't like the sequels.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

Moving along from that...

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

With anthologies I forgot V/H/S, I've yet to see those films.

The ones left blank you haven't seen?

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

Yes, I still have to check those out.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

They're worth checking out for sure.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

I like your list.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

Who's, mine?

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

With Blair Witch now out that series is eligible for this.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

The recent Blair Witch movie was okay, nothing special. Not seen the second film but between this and the original I probably enjoyed this one slightly more.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

I've only seen most (3 quarters at least) horror franchises. I really need to keep my game up lol. However, these are my choices for the franchises that I have seen for every movie:

Friday the 13th - Part III
Halloween - Original
A Nightmare on Elm Street - Original
Saw - Original
Scream - Original
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Original
Evil Dead - Evil Dead II
Child's Play - Curse of Chucky
Hellraiser - Original (only seen the first 3 so far but that's what I think for now)
Final Destination - Original (only seen the first 4)

And as you can see, the first movie, or the original, is usually the best one, so it's mainly just obvious choices. Still, though it's fun picking.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

Update: I recently watched Final Destination 5, and I re-watched the first film, but I still think that my opinion is the same

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

There's definitely some major series you're behind on that'd be good to catch up with one day.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

True, I mean, there's really one movie of each franchise I've seen (the first Paranormal Activity, Silence of the Lambs, the first Wrong Turn, the original Exorcist). I am really trying to get the Hellraisers out of the way as well as attempting to get started on the Leprechaun films.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

I've seen the first few Leprechaun films, they're goofy fun. Been a long time since I watched them.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

I'd like to check them out. I'm not looking for anything spectacular to come out of them, considering that most (if not all) of them aren't meant to be scary and are meant to be comedic, unlike something like Child's Play where they try to be scary in the first few entries and try to be funny in the later ones that way it keeps the solid balance for the franchise's seriousness.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

If you enjoy a good comical Horror movie you might enjoy some of the Leprechaun movies.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

I kinda have a love-hate relationship with horror comedies. Some of which that I really like (the Evil Dead trilogy, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, the Gremlins films) and others that I don't like (Freddy's Dead, Seed of Chucky, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation).

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

Horror-Comedies are like any other genre for me, there's the good and the bad.

Re: Best Movie In a Horror Series

Okay, so here are my choices now without hesitation:

Friday the 13th - Friday the 13th Part III
Halloween - Halloween (1978)
A Nightmare on Elm Street - A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Saw - Saw (2004)
Scream - Scream (1996)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Alien - Only seen the first 2 so Alien (1979)
Predator - Seen the first and Predators so I guess the first
Phantasm - Haven't seen any yet
Evil Dead - Evil Dead II
Hellraiser - Hellraiser (1987)
Child's Play - Curse of Chucky
Final Destination - Final Destination (2000)
Paranormal Activity - Paranormal Activity (2007)
Wrong Turn - Wrong Turn (2003)
Insidious - Insidious (2011)
The Conjuring - The Conjuring (2013)
