Best and Worst : Best acted meltdown scenes

Best acted meltdown scenes

What are some of the best acted scenes of meltdowns and rage breaking points you've seen? Most importantly, the meltdowns have to be justified.

Totally agree. Amazing acting in these scenes.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

Check out:

Jessica Lange in Frances
Michael Fassbender in Shame
Naomi Watts in 21 Grams
Isabelle Adjani in The Story of Adele H.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

Thank you for mentioning Jessica Lange in FRANCES-82'. She is stunning in this film and has more meltdowns than a Mr. Whippy ice-cream freezer breakdown.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

Yeah, Lange delivers some goodies. My favorite meltdown has got to be when Frances bounces her mother around in the hallway and finally gets her fingers around her mother's turkey waddle neck. You can feel her sense of rage. I was hoping to see the mother turn blue in the face. I hated the mother with a passion, maybe only 2nd to Nurse Ratchet.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

"Now you've done it little sister." Old hag that she was. What is with the control and manipulating issues many of these mothers have towards their children when they are sold up as being so loving and nurturing?

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

Okay, your citing of VOD dialogue was pretty funny.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

From the top of my head:

Clive Owen in Children of Men. After the car chase when he tries to light a cigarette, but breaks down crying.

Christian Bale in The Machinist when he screams at the prostitute and his phonecall to his lawyer in American Psycho. There is a lot of good stuff in Harsh Times as well. Especially near the end when he points a gun to Mike and then starts sobbing.

Sylvester Stallone in Rocky when he screams and yells at Mickey in his apartment and also the ending to First Blood.

Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon when he talks to his wife over the phone. Also a lot of the final act stuff in Scarface.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

Michael Keaton in Clean & Sober:

The rebab's admin Craig (a former addict himself) gently, but firmly asks Darryl to leave the facility. Darryl, a full blow addict and in deep trouble, can get the idea that all his problems are brought on by himself and begins to get madder and madder at having to exit. It keeps escalating into petty, personal attacks, made worse that Craig has heard it all before and basically pays him no mind.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

All these are great. I'd add:

Nicolas Cage in Vampire's Kiss...when he flips out over how things are filed alphabetically. I don't know the full context, but his whole "A, B, C, D..." tirade is amazing. Only Cage could shout the alphabet and keep it interesting.

Will Ferrell in Zoolander. "Am I taking crazy pills? He has ONE. LOOK. Le Tigre? Blue Steel??? They're all the same #$%&! look!"

On a more serious note, Sally Field in Steel Magnolias, the funeral scene. She perfectly expresses anger, grief, and everything in between. She's the best.

_____________
Hardly! Fields can be one of the most "phony" dramatic actresses I have encountered. Horses for courses of course; but she was better at sticking to her lightweight comedic roles. She was OK in Magnolia's, I just don't think she cut the mustard with her more serious scenes regarding Shelby. She pretend acts what she is feeling, as though she doesn't really get the feeling and is sulky. It astonishes me that many are blinded by Field's lack of "realness" and "genuine" spontaneity in many of her teary, dramatic breakdown scenes.

She needed to watch Bette Midler in THE ROSE-79' and promptly refuse he Oscar she won for "Norma Rae" and post it out to Midler who was in competition with her. Midler was superb and had plenty of "real" and "raw" meltdowns.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

Yeah, I just can't get on the Sally Field bandwagon. She is adequate in "Norma Rae" and really not very good in "Steel Magnolias". The thing I REALLY don't like about Field in SM is how you can just TELL that she thinks she's the wise, loving mother to end all wise, loving mothers when really she's just a condescending, overbearing bitch. Even her crackup at the cemetery didn't move me much, though I did giggle when Olympia Dukakis offered up Shirley MacLaine.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

It's like Field couldn't even play being a loving mother all that believably. MacLaine and Parton were the best thing about Magnolias an the main reason for me to watch.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

I suppose whether or not an actor clicks with a viewer is subjective most of the time. It looks like I'm in the minority on the Sally Field train.

At least people here can have a discussion and not degenerate into name calling. You should see the Star Wars boards, or any superhero discussion board whatsoever. I like the civility here, lol

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

Ashley Judd in Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood

when the younger Vivi Abbott Walker(Judd)has a nervous breakdown and is beating Sidda and her siblings in the front yard. Her character OD'd on Dexamyl and had a history of manic-depression. This was an Oscar-worthy performance in my opinion.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon. Al Pacino in Scarecrow. And in Justice For All. But also the end of The Godfather Part III.

Re: Best acted meltdown scenes

I love a good meltdown scene. I'm not sure what you meant by "it has to be justified".

How about Mink Stole in "Desperate Living"?

"HELLO? WHAT NUMBER ARE YOU CALLING? ...YOU'VE DIALED THE WRONG NUMBER! SORRY?!!! HOW CAN YOU EVER REPAY THE 30 SECONDS YOU HAVE STOLEN FROM MY LIFE?!! I HATE YOU, YOUR CHILDREN AND YOUR RELATIVES!!!
