Re: Troll City

I don't much care for trolls or socks (at the end of the day, they both stink), I just wanted to compliment your username.

It wasn't until recently that i realized, william munny is not the real hero of that movie. When things turn bad for him, he reverts to his old ways as a stone cold killer.

Ned logan does the right thing. He might have briefly returned to his old ways of drinking and whoring, but when the time comes to kill again, he can't go back down that darkest of paths.

The schofield kid is cocky and brash because he wants will and ned to respect him, but once he gets a taste of how it feels to kill a man, he decides the violent life is not for him, instead of falling into years of doing what his partners did. His confession to will is one of my favorite scenes in that film.

Sorry, off-topic. Whatever.

I agree. It was brave of the kid to admit he wasn't cut out to be a meaner-than-hell, rootin-tootin, cold-blooded, damn killer. Also it was the only time William Munny showed him respect. Loved that movie... one of the best ever made imo.

Fuelled by whisky...the more he drank the meaner he got.

Re: Troll City

While i agree that it is obkectively a truly great film, i must confess that my tastes don't always run towards what is great. So, while i do love it, i have to state that the outlaw josey wales is my all-time favorite western. Make of that what you will. It is probably among the most respectable of my favorites, really. I love schlocky, trashy films more than i do most of these weepy, high-brow dramas that we're expected to love because the academia says so...

Re: Troll City

You can like whatever you want my friend...I don't judge. I might laugh though :)

I'm not necessarily a fan of what the Academy likes. Many a stinker has won best picture...Shakespeare in Love and The Kings Speech spring to mind.

The thing I liked most about Unforgiven was the dialogue. It seemed authentic for the era and every line was delivered perfectly by the cast. The acting was superb, as good as any high brow Shakespearian actor imo. Nothing against Shakespearian actors mind, it's just that I reckon there's quite a bit of snobbery about that. American screen actors can be every bit as good as their British counterparts.

I'm a big fan of historical dramas in general whether they be set in the old west or ancient Rome. I like action though. Action and good dialogue.

Re: Troll City

You can laugh, but you can never diminish a man's love for films like pacific rim, pirates of the caribbean, airheads, brotherhood of the wolf, etc.

I also enjoy historical films (particularly films set in the 18th century), but i tend to lean away from the more dramatic stuff. My sig kinda says it all there, i think. If i want to watch people sitting around talking, i can watch tv. I go to the theater to see explosions and spectacle forty feet tall, as it was meant to be.

Re: Troll City

Not too sure about the others but I liked Pacific Rim. I've never seen Airheads.

Ray Harryhausen was right and is backed up at the box office. If you look at the highest grossing movies of all time, nearly all the top films are fantasy or Sci-Fi. I loved Harryhausen's army of skeletons, the first time I saw them my eyes nearly popped out of my head. I watch Jason and the Argonauts everytime it's on telly.

Hitchcock hated too much talking in movies, he called them "plays on film". He preferred the silent era when it was visual storytelling.

I don't have a favourite century but the Roman era, the old west and Victorian England is usually a must watch for me. I like a mix... good dialogue, good story, big special effects, explosions and battles all on a huge scale.

Random thought... makes me wonder what's next on Westworld? I'm hoping for Roman world.

Re: Troll City

Not only anti-hero, but anti-western. The main protagonist an old, broken-down pig farmer who can't shoot and can't ride a horse, the antagonist is the law and order, and it dispels the usual 'tall tale' version of the western within the movie itself, with Little Bill's deconstruction of 'the Duke of Death'.

Eastwood's best by far IMO, and definitely a top 5 movie all-time for me, I have to watch it again whenever it plays on TV.

It's a helluva thing.

Re: Troll City

I think Unforgiven is the western Eastwood was trying to make all along but never quite got it right.

The film showed us two William Munny's, the hard working family man and the psychopathic killer. Maybe we are all capable of being both? All it took for Munny was a taste of his old life and some whisky to fuel his rage. He could sure as hell shoot when he got back in touch with his inner psycho.

Re: Troll City

If memory serves, Eastwood bought the rights to the script many years before and waited until he attained the right age to portray Munny.

All it took for Munny was a taste of his old life and some whisky to fuel his rage.

Actually it was news of Ned's death that triggered his murder-fest at the end. Once he heard that, all those guys were toast, big-time.

Yes but it was obvious he was using the whisky to fuel his rage. If you remember the scene, as soon as he heard Ned was dead he grabbed the bottle and started chugging that whisky down, getting angrier and angrier the more he drank.

Will Munny: "I ain't like that no more. I ain't the same, Ned. Claudia, she straightened me up, cleared me of drinkin' whiskey and all. Just 'cause we're goin' on this killing, that don't mean I'm gonna go back to bein' the way I was. I just need the money, get a new start for them youngsters. Ned, you remember that drover I shot through the mouth and his teeth came out the back of his head? I think about him now and again. He didn't do anything to deserve to get shot, at least nothin' I could remember when I sobered up."

Munny couldn't remember much of the old days because he was drunk all the time. Whisky made him violent. When his wife made him give up drinking he turned into a peaceful family man. He wouldn't have been able to do the saloon massacre without the booze. He was a mean drunk and then some.

The other part of that scene I liked was the kid getting more and more scared as he watched Munny getting drunk. Munny's body language changed, his voice changed, he started to act like the stone-cold-killer they kept going on about... William Munny out of Missouri; killer of women and children. The meanest goddamn son-of-a-bitch alive, as cold as the snow and no weak nerve nor fear.

Re: Troll City

The GoT board is worse.

It cleans up a bit during the season, but there do seem to be a lot of people afflicted with the "look-at-me" syndrome.

We call it the "Game of Trolls" ...because it is.

Pull up a comfy chair, take your pants off and let your wobbly bits breathe, and enjoy the show. I know I do.
