FIRST TIME MOVIE VIEWING

Poker Night (2014, Greg Francis)

TV
This film centres upon a rookie detective that decides to attend an annual poker night held by veteran police officers, where each one details how they captured a murder suspect and how he uses these stories to escape a latter situation with a psycho killer. The film has a good cast and a few good moments, mostly around the poker table but it becomes a convoluted mess and a bit of a chore to get through near the end.
3/10

REPEAT MOVIE VIEWING

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010, Edgar Wright)

blu-ray
This is Edgar Wrights first film to be based on already existing material as he adapts this graphic novel to the screen with a rare excellence.Perfectly cast and executed with non stop entertainment.
8/10

Fading Gigolo (2013, John Turturro)

tv
Woody Allan and John Turturro co-star in this New York set indie comedy with some pretty good results. Woody is great on screen, one of his better on screen roles in years.
6.5/10

Chariots of Fire (1981, Hugh Hudson)
blu-ray
This is the true story of two British track athletes, one a determined Jew and the other a devout Christian who compete in the 1924 Olympics. I had not seen this since I was a kid, these days the whole affair feels a little stiff but the score is still memorable.
5/10

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

Scott Pilgrim VS the world: I loved it the first time I saw it but the second time, which was recently, not as much. I thought that the ending, including the final battle, was a bit weak. 7/10

Mine:

The three musketeers (2011 Blu-ray): This one's been bashed by both the critics and the people so let me swoop in with my cape and sword to defend it. Yes, if you want to professionally analyze this movie in every single details you'll find its badly flawed. But as I sat on my couch and watched it, I was entertained and that's what's important to me. The special effects and action are awfully nice, The acting and dialogs are laughingly awesome, The script is terribly fun and cliché, the one-liners are perfectly cheesy and the ending was impressively over the top. To start with, I have weaknesses for Jovovich and Waltz that I both loved, Orlando Bloom was pretty good but I didn't like the guy playing Athos. The movie is almost 2 hours and it went by very fast. And the cinematography really is nice. 6.5/10

Max Payne (2008 DVD): The movie sure had a few redeeming qualities:
- the snowy city
- the slo-motions
- the shotguns
-
... That's about it.

Seriously, this must be Mark Wahlberg's worst movie. (I think Clive Owen would've made a great Max Payne even though I don't like him particularly) Plus, I already struggle when I see "Jackie Burkhart" in comedy movies, in this it just didn't work for me. As for the game, I used to be scared *beep* when I played it in my parent's basement and I loved it, so I knew I should've stayed away from this movie because it was only PG 13 and the trailer sucked. Then I
saw the DVD for one box at the used store and Decided to check it out. It sucked. The crazy-dark-scary-psychedelic vibe from the game was not there at all and the plot was a disjointed, boring and predictable mess. 3/10

Children of men: I am discovering this director and I am just amazed by him. The way he shoots the scenes make them feel so real it's scary. I went into this one blindly, as I never watched the trailer, and found myself glued to my seat as it unfolded marvellously. Every single thing that happens on the screen has an effect on me. From the acting to the story to the cinematography (oh! The cinematography!) everything was pretty much flawless. I had heard a lot of praises about this movie but always had my doubts. I was wrong and they were right. It's gripping, breathtaking and unique. Un chef-d'oeuvre mon ami. Right up there, underneath The Pianist. 9/10

The golden cane warrior (2014 Netflix): A standard betrayal and revenge story spiked with a fortuitous love but it's one of the finest Indonesian movie I've seen. Well made with Beautiful sceneries, especially in HD, and the actions scenes were decent. The cast was solid, especially the young actors. 7/10

Michael Bolton's big, sexy Valentine's Day special (Netflix 2017): I know some of the songs but never was familiar with the guy and could've never put a name on his face if I was asked. This started to play when I opened up Netflix and decided to give it a chance and ended up watching it all and having some good laughs. The people are funny as are most of the sketches. 6.5/10

Documentary:

Placebo: Soulmates never die (2003 24mins): Friday night I was feeling pretty groovy and decided to pop in one of my favorite music DVD. Only to realize that I never had watched the documentary that was on it. It was just awesome, the happiness on my face gradually increased until one point where I had a big whole smile that didn't want to leave. They truly are one of the greatest band ever. My second favorite after a band you might know by the name of The doors. if you never heard of Placebo, I strongly suggest you check them out. you will either fall in love or dislike it. 10/10

Excuse my English, I am French-Canadian

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

Children of men is one ive alwys loved since i saw in the cinema, he's a great director. 8/10

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

The Three Musketeers - 6.5/10 Surprisingly fun
Max Payne - 4/10 I agree it is one of Wahlberg's worst if not his worst
Children of Men - 6.5/10 Yup, I'm in the vast minority here but I find the screenplay a bit dull and Clive Owen is an absolute bore here. Great cinematography and themes though

I am a fan of his Harry Potter film and Gravity but besides those I am not the biggest fan of Alfonso Cuaron.

Only seen Children of Men from yours. It needs a second viewing, but I liked it a lot. Great story and amazing cinematography. 8/10

The Thing, and it was quite the cinematic achievement, yes sir!!!

YOURS

Poker Night - 3.5/10 Yup
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World - 5/10 I dislike Edgar Wright and this is his worst
Fading Gigolo - 5.5/10
Chariots of Fire - 6/10 I kind of agree with you

MINE

Fury (1936 Fritz Lang) - 7/10
Dirty Grandpa (2016 Dan Mazer) - 3.5/10
Melinda and Melinda (2004 Woody Allen) - 4.5/10 One of his worst
Moonstruck (1987 Norman Jewison) - 7/10
Gold (2016 Stepehn Gaghan) - 5.5/10 Matthew McConaughey's terrific performance deserved a better movie
Masterminds (2016 Jared Hess) - 4.5/10
The Bad and the Beautiful - 7/10
Bleed for This (2016 Ben Younger) - 6.5/10 better than expected and Teller and Eckhart are very good
Viva Zapata! (1952 Elia Kazan) - 7/10 Good directing and good performances save an underwritten scirpt
20th Century Women (2016 Mike Mills) - 7.5/10 good perforances across the board and interesting writing make this well worth watching
Gone with the Wind (1939 Victor Fleming) - 7.5/10
The Tomb of Ligeia (1964 Roger Corman) - 7/10 Fun gothic horror with an always reliably good performance from Vincent Price
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966 Alan Rafkin) - 6/10
Don't Breathe (2016 Fede Alvarez) - 5.5/10 Poor directing and boring characters ruin what could have been an intense horror film
Lights Out (2016 David F. Sandberg) - 4.5/10 Starts out mildly interesting but goes absolutely nowhere
The Last Emperor (1987 Bernardo Bertolucci) - 7.5/10 Like Gone with the Wind this is a very well made historical epic
Death Becomes Her (1992 Robert Zemeckis) - 6/10 Starts out promising and has some very creative visual effects and some fun dark humor but loses it's way in the second half. Sidney Pollock has a hilarious cameo as a doctor.
Chloe (2009 Atom Egoyan) - 6/10 An excellent performance from Julianne Moore and a really good first half are ruined by a very trashy second half

Television

Orange is the New Black: Season 4 (2016) - 5.5/10 I like the first couple seasons but this show has become quite dull

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

Melinda and Melinda - It doesn't quite work, but it's an interesting concept and i liked the performances (especially Will Ferrell) 6.5/10

Gold - will watch in the next few days

The Bad and the Beautiful - I liked the story a lot and loved the performances. 8/10

Viva Zapata! (1952 Elia Kazan) - Good performances and well made overall, but it was boring 5/10

20th Century Women - I'll probably watch it this week

Gone with the Wind - Wonderfully made and acted. Doesn't feel as long as it is. 7.5/10

Don't Breathe - I found it very intense, but it could have done with more likable protagonists. 7/10

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

It is an interesting idea that is very poorly executed imo. It is very boring and the performances are merely servicable. I did like Will Ferrell though. I found myself zoning out during most of the dialogue.

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

I've been thinking about giving Dirty Grandpa a shot. I see you finally did and hated it.

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

Go for it.

It isn't as bad as I though it was going to be but it's still very bad. I was expecting a career worst performance from DeNiro but he plays the character the way it is written. It's just written horribly.

Efron and Audrey Plaza are the high points and I can't say I didn't laugh at some parts but mostly becasue of how dumb they were.

I like The Last Airbender and After Earth better than you .

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

Yours:

Scott Pilgrim - only seen it once, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would based om the trailers. Maybe a 7.5/10

First Time Viewings:

Beauty and the Beast (1991, Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise)
This Disney classic is one that has evaded me for whatever reason. It didn't disappoint though anf is deservedly ranked among their best. It tells a great story, has good characters, good music, and stellar animation.
8/10

Blue Jay (2016, Alex Lehmann)
This one is about two former high school sweethearts who meet by chance in their small town more than 20 years after graduating. It has great Black and White cinematography, the two central performances are strong and I liked both characters. The film is basically just the two of them talking for 80 minutes, but I really liked it.
7.5/10

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949, James Algar, Clyde Geronimi, and Jack Kinney)
This early Disney effort is two separate films in one. I enjoyed the first part about Mr. Toad, but didn't care for the Sleepy Hollow segment.
6.5/10

The Jungle Book (2016, Jon Favreau)
This "live action" update of the classic story is almost entirely CGI and for the most part the effects are strong. Some of the animals didn't look 100% real though. They got together an all-star voice cast and while most of them are good, I found them a bit distracting due to their recognizable voices. The main kid was pretty bad and the film feels longer than it is. I'm a big fan of the animated film, but this one didn't work for me.
5.5/10

Lady in the Water (2006, M. Night Shyamalan)
An apartment superintendant rescues a woman from the pool and he disovers she's actually a character from a bedtime story. Paul Giamatti is good and I liked the score, but the film is just kind of stupid and boring.
4/10

The Happening (2008, M. Night Shyamalan)
A trio of people try to survive a plague that causes those infected to commit suicide. The tone is all wrong and the performances are pretty poor. It does offer some good unintentional laughs and the score is very good.
5/10

Split (2017, M. Night Shyamalan)
The latest from Shyamalan is about three teenage girls who are kidnapped by a man with 23 personalities. James McAvoy is terrific and the rest of the cast is good as well. The camerawork is grrat, it has a good score, and it's very intense in parts and the plot kept me engaged and guessing till the end. There was a really cool tie in at the end too.
7.5/10

The Visit (2015, M. Night Shyamalan)
This found footage film is about two kids who go to visit their estranged grandparents for a week. The film has its moments, a great twist, and a pretty strong finale, but the little boy was annoying and the tone is all ovre the place. The horror works well, bur the conedy feels out of place.
6/10

The Last Airbender (2010, M. Night Shyamalan)
I've never even seen the show, but yeah this is awful. Bad acting, bad dialogue, uninteresting characters, and a story that's an utter bore. I zoned out from the start.
2.5/10

After Earth (2013, M. Night Shyamalan)
A crash landing leaves a father and son stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity's escape. The son must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help. The acting sucks, I didn't like or care about the characters and the story was not at all engaging. Good score though amd at least it's short. Still terrible though.
3/10

Repeat Viewings:

Tarzan & Jane (2002, Steve Loter)
This direct to video sequel is one I enjoyed as a kid, but it's pretty bad.
4/10

Mulan 2 (2004, Darrell Rooney and Lynne Southerland)
This one has its moments, but overall is a poor sequel to one of Disney's best.
5/10

Kronk's New Groove (2005, Saul Blinkoff and Elliot M. Bour)
This one is actually somewhat enjoyable, but nowhere near as good as the first one. It's pretty silly, but it has some laughs and could have been much worse.
6/10

Aladdin (1992, Ron Clements and John Musker)
Classic Disney right here. Great animation, terrific songs, awesome characters, and a whole lot of fun. Robin Williams is amazing.
9/10

The Return of Jafar (1994, Toby Shelton, Tad Stones, and Alan Zaslove)
I've always enjoyed this direct to video sequel to Aladdin and I still do. It's nothing spectacular, but it's a fun follow up.
7/10

Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996, Tad Stones)
I've always enjoyed this one as well. It too is still fun even now and has the edge over the second film due to the return of Robin Williams.
7/10

The Lion King (1994, Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff)
Not only Disney's best, but the best animated film ever made in my opinion. It has beautiful animation, great characters, amazing music, and a terrific story. It's damn near perfect in my eyes.
9.5/10

The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998, Darrell Rooney)
Here's a direct to video sequel that O feel deserved a theatrical release, as it's actually quite good. Good story, great songs, and it's entertaining throughout.
7.5/10

The Lion King 1½ (2004, Bradley Raymond)
This one's pretty silly and creates some annoying inconsistency with the original, but it's best looked at as a fun spinoff, rarher than cannon with the first film and in that sense it's very entertaining.
7/10

Days of Wine and Roses (1962, Blake Edwards)
This one is a powerful look at addiction with brilliant performances from Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick and many great scenes throughout.
8/10

Hey buddy

Scott pilgrim - fancy a re-watch soon, seen it a couple of times the year it came out. Felt it was smart. - 7/10

Chariots of Fire - always been a chore...

For this week

first time views

The big short - Adam McKay - a comedy on such a subject shouldn't work, but it does! Takes the subject seriously and breaks it down into great sections. - 7/10

The help - was never interested in this, judged it as over sacherine nonsense. It wasn't bad, it's an important subject that I don't think is done wholly justice. Really goes for the heartstrings, never quite found mine but all the performances were good and some of the lightness was a good touch. It is sacherine but not quite nonsense. - 6.5/10

Repeat view

The big lebowski - coen brothers - I make no apologies, I absolutely love lebowski and it works for me every te I watch it. Not the smartest comedy from the brothers but it's the funniest and has quite a touching end. The dream sequences are among my favourites put on screen. Maybe the best film from them along with the stark contrasting no country. - 10/10

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

hey :)

The big short - Adam McKay - one of the best of that year 7/10

The help - tbh i cant even really remember t that well but i gave it a 6/10

The big lebowski - I know i am in the minority but i find this to be really average, never got the obsession some people have with it. 5/10

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

Big lebowski is great

Forgot to log two other films from the week both first time views!

Everybody wants some!! - Richard linklater - almost turned it off 20 mins in, but I did warm to the characters and as always music was great. Not memorable. - 6/10

The money pit - is what it is, hanks is solid entertainment. - 4/10

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

Yeah, saw money pit forever ago, 4/10 sounds about right

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

The big short: really liked it too. Great characters, great story, solid directing. 7.5/10

The big L: not my favorite from the brothers but still a great movie. 8/10

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

Hacksaw Ridge has one of the best stories ever told. I love it so much!

Here are my films:
La La Land (2016) 10/10 - I can't believe it's just a film, it felt like I watched a true art.

Trainspotting (1996) 7.5/10

Mrtav 'ladan (2002) / Frozen Stiff 7.5/10 - I watched it in club with my friends. It's funny, I want to meet Srdjan Todorovic so bad, I'm pretty close to him.

The Slaughter Rule (2002) 3.5/10 - Not a fan of sport story, but I'm finally done with Ryan Gosling's films.

Gold (2016) 4.5/10 - It's pretty meh and just bla bla. The story didn't give me interest, it's nothing special at all. Matthew McConaughey's performance was easily the best part of the film, He was an excellent to play as ugly character.

See you in Imdb 2 next week!

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

Hi DSC

Not seen any of yours and haven't been watching any films lately(hence not posting last week and maybe the week before...can't remember). Been binge watching a few tv shows(The Walking Dead, Twin Peaks) when I've had the time but generally been busy with one thing and another.

Re: What Movies Did You Watch Last Week? (06/02-12/02)

Hey Petey, yeah I didn't watch that much this eeek eirther as I was moving house.
I like the walking dead but not so hot ontwinpeaks anymore

Hi, Dark

See you on IMDB2 site next week.

Yours:

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World 8/10

Really enjoyed it, it was really creative.

Fading Gigolo 6.5/10

Yeah, Woody was great. The movie itself wasn't bad, but I enjoyed it less than you.

Chariots of Fire 8/10

Saw it a while ago, I remember liking it a lot. Agreed, Vangelis' score is fantastic.

Mine:

Hacksaw Ridge 8/10

Really liked it, I found it powerful, and I love the classic cinema vibe it has, even the first half. Andrew Garfield was really good, but I think he deserved the Best Actor nomination more for Silence. Hugo Weaving was great too.

Night Shift 8/10

It's the Ron Howard movie with Michael Keaton and Henry Winkler. Never saw it before, it's really funny, Michael Keaton and Shelley Long are great. Billy Blaze as a character is almost as good as Beetlejuice.

Duel at Diablo 6.5/10

It's a western with James Garner and Sidney Poitier. It's not bad, it feels dated in parts though. I didn't like much a twist in the end.

Leatherheads 7/10

George Clooney's movie. It's O.K. Renee Zellweger was a bit miscast, IMO, though.

"May Fortune favor the foolish"

Re: Hi, Dark

Hey buddy

Glad we agree on Garfield

Been too long since I saw night shift

Yep

And I actially think Hugo Weaving would have deserved a nomination, instead.

I would watch a Night Shift 2, with Michael Keaton reprising the Bily Blaze role.

"May Fortune favor the foolish"

Re: Yep

not really a fan of Hugo in general, he was ok enough here but i dont think nomination worthy
