Best and Worst : The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

SF is without a doubt my favorite genre, no other genre questions our own existence and reality in a similar way. There are countless great, visionary, original and unique SF movies out there, but if I had to choose the single greatest of all-time, it would be a tie between The Matrix (1999) and Interstellar (2014).

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Metropolis (1927) without a doubt.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

2001: A Space Odyssey

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Don't know if it is the greatest of all time but I really liked District 9.

District 9 (2009)

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

2001: A Space Odyssey.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Interstellar an all-time best.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Metropolis (1927)

Not only is it the progenitor of the whole genre, but specific aspects are still borrowed for modern movies.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

My oh my, greatest Sci-Fi movie of all time?

Tough one.

2001 is visually impressive for when it was made. The end of the film leaves you with questions, so it makes you think. In those respects, it certainly has claim on number 1.

For me, I'd have to pick Gattaca. It's unique among Sci-Fi movies in terms of its story.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

The correct answer is: Blade Runner.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

2001: A Space Odyssey

hon mentions

Stalker
Solaris (1972)
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Aliens

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

HER, WALL-E and WAR OF THE WORLDS (2005).

a tie between The Matrix (1999) and Interstellar (2014).

7/10 and 9/10.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

The answer is:

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) / Stanley Kubrick

I would suggest that also in the running are:

Metropolis (1927) / Fritz Lang
King Kong (1933) / Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack
The Thing from Another World (1951) / Christian Nyby
The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) / Jack Arnold
On the Beach (1959) / Stanley Kramer
The Time Machine (1960) / George Pal
Tanin no kao (1966) (The Face Of Another) / Hiroshi Teshigahara
Alien (1979) / Ridley Scott
Mad Max 2 (1981) (The Road Warrior) / George Miller
Children of Men (2006) / Alfonso Cuarón
Los cronocrímenes (2007) (Timecrimes) / Nacho Vigalondo
Primer (2004) / Shane Carruth
Predestination (2014) / Michael and Peter Spierig

2001: A Space Odyssey, for sure.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Very difficult to pin down to just one, but I would suggest the following as fine examples of science fiction 'greatness'...

The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956)
The Quatermass Experiment (1955)
Village Of The Damned (1960)
Unearthly Stranger (1963)
X:The Man With X Ray Eyes (1963)

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Inception 2010
Interstellar 2014
Twelve Monkeys 1995

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

I would have to say The Matrix. It has so many levels and hits all the right notes on each one.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Alien - no question

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Alien is my second favourite film of all time!

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

2001: A Space Odyssey

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

I meant to go back and post this the other day. Kind of a follow up.

Here are my top 5 of all time, the first 2 are so close, the distance is nearly infinitesimal!

1. Gattaca
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. Alien
4. Blade Runner
5. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Dear Santa, please send me a Tiffany Mynx clone or lovebot this year.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Yesss some love for Gattaca! Truly underrated. That score alone.

Sunshine (2007), Gattaca (1997) and 2001 are probably my top 3.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

It's definitely "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968).

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Inception.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Star Wars.

Star Wars won six competitive Academy Awards at the 50th Academy Awards.

Started a 12 billion dollar franchise prior to its purchase by Disney.

According to the Guinness Book of World records, Star Wars is the third highest grossing film when adjusting for inflation at the U.S. box office.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Star Wars isn't a Sci-Fi though, it's a fantasy movie in the same genre of say Lord of the Rings, Guardians of the Galaxy

Many science fiction films share both categories but Star Wars has always been science fiction.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Since The Wizard of Oz involves teleportation, I'd have to say The Wizard of Oz!

"Professor Marvel never guesses - he knows!"

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Ok that's crazy. Cuz those were the two I was going to pick when I read the subject. Matrix has some of the absolute best ideas and follow through. Interstellar combines the ultimate time-relativity theory with the best purpose in life, love.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Bladerunner, imo.

@exaffect
Favorite DC/Marvel Characters: Flash, Martian Manhunter, Deadpool, Daredevil

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (the original)

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

2001 without a doubt

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

looking at my favorite movies and going strictly by what IMDb has 'Sci-Fi' apart of their genre it's one of the following...

-The Terminator (1984)
-Source Code (2011)

both are within my Top 29 movies in general.

p.s. for me there is no difference between 'favorite' 'greatest' or whatever other term you want to use as i ultimately judge movies based on how much i enjoy watching them overall.

Innerspace
The Langoliers (TV mini-series)
Predator
The Thing (1982)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Bang for buck: Primer.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Alien and Aliens!!!

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

2001: A Space Odyssey is still ahead of our time. There is nothing else in the same league.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

For the first ten minutes I thought "2046" (2004) might be in the running, then it turned into something else. Don't ask me what! Great movie but impossible to classify.

Re: The single greatest Science Fiction movie of all-time?

Frankenstein (1931)

The Terminator is close, though.
