Grown Ups : This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

Its because most of the people on this website don't understand good comedy writing. They think that The Hangover is God's special gift to comedy. This movie is like a early 90's late 80's throw back up there with The Great Outdoors.

I know I'll get trolled and flamed for this but I don't care I know comedy when I see it. This movie makes me laugh from the witty comments to the slapstick humor.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

Easy comparison to make with Great Outdoors but check back and see that there was an actual story involved, Grown ups is just a bunch of people going away doing stuff. If that is what passes off as a good movie nowadays then i'm moving to hollywood to become a writer. 3/10 being generous.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

The story was the weak point but the movie was funny.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

What is so weak about the story line? It's about a group of friends getting back together for a weekend because of the death of someone important in their lives. It's just mindless fun. There doesn't have to be some underlying Shakespearean plot or anything.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

So?

SO?!

Really, SO?!

WHY does it have to have an intricate story? I don't get it? This movie is highly entertaining and an awesome feelgood movie. I could watch a 10 hour long extended version of it of them just sitting by the lake and doing fun stuff. It's peaceful, serene.

Doesn't always have to be Shawshank redemeption.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

Yeah, but that hardly makes it a better film. It still sucks.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

Wrong.

The only thing it has in common with The Great Outdoors is the cabin/lake setting. That's it. That movies was genius and this movie is absolutely horrible. End of story.

It is not a throwback to anything other than old *beep* movies.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

This movie is pretty good. The writing is excellent and it's a story about friends reuniting after a long time. The underlying theme is someone's death bringing old friends and enriching their lives one last time. Everyone that attended the funeral was better by the end of the movie.

How does nobody get this? It's not the greatest plot and it is a little "cutesy and warm" but it's still a pretty good message.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

A death of a person that had 2 minutes of screen time. The only 2 times his name was even mentioned was at the funeral and the game at the end. The writers failed to clarify how much The Coach meant to the characters. They spent most of their time writing sub-par one liners and fart jokes.

This movie was obviously made so Adam Sandler and his friends could all make a movie together. It could have worked out, had it showed more effort, but it didn't.

Unless Sandler can pull anything other than another family flick or romanic comedy out of his hat, i'm done with him. Sooner or later his fans will get tired of the same old gags.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

you are a moron

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

Naw, Klenic is right. It was a bunch of dick and fart jokes. I gave this movie a 4/10 and The Hangover 2/10. The Hangover was just TOO random. It was like they looked at a couple of catalogs and just threw whatever they found into the movie. A wannabe, live version of Robot Chicken? And yeah, I am tired of Sandler (and Galifianakis too).

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

I read the script to The Hangover like a year before it was released, and loved it. It was wonderfully structured, and it had a strangely unique concept. Then Todd Phillips and his crew re wrote it, and didn't do that bad of a job. They did fix up a lot of the cliche's.

To give it a 2/10 is ridiculous, man. Sure, it wasn't as good as it was hyped up to be, but it definitely delivered more in the long run. Especially if you compare it to a film like Grown Ups, which is targeted directly at the Adam Sandler family comedy slapstick humor audience. The Hangover's audience was full of all kinds of different people. Some didn't get the humor, some did, and other people probably walked into the theater expecting Big Mama's house 8.

It's strange that people are getting sick of Galifianakis already. He's only done like 2 movies since The Hangover - Dinner with Shmucks and Due Date. Both of which were pretty mediocre, yes, and he was kind of type cast in both of them. I mean, look at Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler. They do the same movies over and over again. Which is fine, because they have fan bases that like that kind of stuff. But every now and then, they turn around and do something completely different. Like Adam with Punch-Drunk Love and Funny People. And Ferrell with Stranger Than Fiction and the soon to be released Everything Must Go. Even Galifianakis is doing different stuff, showcasing his talent. It's Kind of a Funny Story released last year (limited), that was an independent film by the guys that made Half Nelson. His character in that was way different than the others he's been doing.

And what i said about Grown Ups was my honest opinion on the film. If you disagree with me, that's fine. That's because your into this kind of stuff. I understand. But i've just seen this same movie liked a million times before. I'm sure if the writers put a little more effort, or if they chose a different Director, i probably would have enjoyed this more. But i just didn't. The end. I'm not trolling, so don't call me a moron for having a opinion.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

While I do appreciate the above post, but comparing Sandlre to Ferrell is rather…umm…off. Ferrel can play any emotion he wants…from dead serious to witty humor to slapstick. His movies rarely hand you the punchline like you're an idiot. Sandler's movies are not so diverse.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

that's kind of the point. i was just a springboard for reuniting friends back together. doesn't need a two hour long explanation.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

The last decent movie he was in, was 50 First Dates.

the Great Outdoors was not genius. Don't get carried away there.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

I thought it was pretty funny. I didn't care for The Hangover, and I hate how much it gets praised. Everyone complains about the story and character development, but they don't seem to understand it's a *beep* comedy for god's sake. This isn't The Fighter or Black Swan, it's a movie made to make you laugh. Honestly, if they spent more time trying to put a connection between how sad these guys were about their middle-school coach dieing, then they'd be getting rid of parts for comedy, which isn't what it was made to do.
Another hilarious, underrated movie: Step Brothers.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

I know a funny movie when i see one. I love movies like happy gilmore to movies like superbad. I love to love films so it's not like i want to hate this film. But this movie was purely embarrasing for the actors because they had the potential to make such a funny movie, but in the end made a childish slapstick-dependant movie that failed in most aspects. Sure maybe in a rare moment it had a chuckle, but nothing more. Very dissapointing seeing as how great the cast was. Tonnes of funny movies out there, this one sadly, was not.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

I liked it. Either you think it's funny or you don't. It's all subjective. To write the reasons it's not funny (or even why it is) implies that as long as you follow a formula the movie will be funny to everyone.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

I agree with twolfb in that comedy IS subjective. It's futile to debate whether something is funny or not. Or, for that matter, try to explain why some people don't find something funny. I actually didn't think this was a funny at all, but who am I to say that it isn't funny to someone else out there.

I'm not too sure why the OP started this thread, trying to analyze why someone like me doesn't like this movie. I don't think the assumption that I "don't understand good comedy writing" is a valid argument since NO ONE understands good comedy writing. If anyone did then they'd write nothing but hit comedies every time they make a film.

At any rate, this flick got a 5.8 average so I'm in the minority (I rated it a 1). I'm used to being in the minority though. I also hate Two and a Half Men and Dane Cook.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

Agree 100%. A rare occurance of countless funny actors in one movie, gone to waste.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

Completely…absolutely…100% CORRECT! Not only was it good writing but the chemistry of a bunch of actors who are good friends in real life made the acting barely acting. It flowed so naturally and just seemed like a home movie of some good friends if you ask me. Now, I loved the Hangover, it was good in its own right, but it falls short compared to Grown Ups if you ask me.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

I loved The Great Outdoors, I bought it as a Christmas gift for my godson last year.
I used to love Adams Sandler movies too; Big Daddy is awesome. Happy Gilmore is one of my all time favorites.

I'm 15 minutes into watching "Grown Ups" for the first time, and am so bored that I'm looking up stuff on IMDB.

It's not a good movie.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

I waited to see it, thought it was alright actually. Some watered down humor but I liked the outdoor theme of going on vacation with old pals. I agree with OP, some people don't see or laugh at comedy unless someone is getting hit in the nuts or puked on. It is all subjective though. :)

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

People might also dislike it based on the fact that half the humour isnt handled as comedy made to make us laugh.Lines from one character who makes fun of another character and the other three semi-laugh and go"Nice one!" ,"he gotcha there",like they were just sitting around on the set and they were filming a lunchbreak. They were basically just laughing at their own jokes which when it comes to most of these guys, they are the only ones that do anyway. But making fun of eachother in a very harmless way that is forgotten five seconds later isnt comedy for us,this film was an inside joke.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

"Its because most of the people on this website don't understand good comedy writing."

Yes, maybe this movie is comedy genius and through some bizarre turn of events the majority of people who saw it couldn't grasp that genious.
But I'd argue a) That that wasn't the case.
And b) Maybe a comedy film aimed at the majority of the viewing public should be written in a manner that allows them to understand it.

Though, the fact that many comedic films considered classics hold high scores on this website suggests that most of the people on this website do understand good comedy writing.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

Exactly!!

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

Please die. Your the reason these stupid movies keep getting made! I hate these movies! Just tell me, you actually laughed out loud at the rob Schneider song? The wasted jokes by the kids? The dog barking? These movies are so bad that I almost wish something would happen in Sandlers life that would make him stop making especially creating these movies!

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

I agree. This movie is pretty funny, THE FIRST COUPLE TIMES YOU WATCH IT. The more and more you watch it, the more you start notice the already somewhat apparent negatives.

Pros:
* lot of famous actors
* genuinely fun to watch
* couple good laughs

Cons:
* slapstick comedy (never gets old…….atleast I thought)
* Adam Sandler, quit while your ahead. Please!!! While I still like you.
* same ol', same ol'

6/10

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

are you retarded? taht was a horrible movie

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

good comedy writing…wow. I'd bet money that there wasn't even a scipt and they just shot whatever they wanted to. This movie as PAINFUL to sit through. Good comedy writing…LMAO that statement was a million time funnier than anything in this movie.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

I really don't think you know what is funny if you liked this movie. Do you think Jay Leno is funny?
I looked forward to watching this movie since I like a lot of his movies and some of them are all time top 20 comedy classics, I found absolutely NOTHING in this movie funny. It was filled with obvious inside jokes and cruel stupid unnecessary insults. Example: The old woman that was dating Rob Schneider's character, Why would you insult her like that? That was mean and uncalled for and in no way funny. Another example: The Body Builder at the water park with the odd voice, why would those women be so cruel to that guy and laugh in his face over his voice? This movie had ZERO humor in it unless you find cruelty funny, do you watch those ASPCA commercials and giggle while the changing pictures of abused dogs and cats are shown on the screen? Please name something funny in this movie, I've watched it more than 5 times in search of just one thing, still looking.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

So you honestly didn't even laugh once watching this movie? I find that hard to believe, maybe you just don't want to admit it. I'd think anyone with any kind of sense of humor would laugh at some of the stuff in the movie. You say it was filled with cruel stupid jokes, well I'm pretty sure that 3/4 of the comedies out that have those kind of jokes. Also you don't watch an Adam Sandler movie and not expect any mean jokes. I mean seriously now. In the end, it's just a movie and that's all. Even my 50 year old father who usually doesn't laugh much at a lot of comedies laughed a ton in this movie. It's just silly fun.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

I find it funny how anyone who dislikes this movie is immediately categorized as someone who "doesn't understand comedy"

Haha…really? Grown Ups received a 10 % rating on rottentomatoes. That mean's 90 % of the critics felt that it wasn't a good film. Withover 67 thousand votes on IMDB, Grown Ups has an average rating of 5.8 which is well below the standard for what you would consider a good movie.

So are you saying 90 % of the critics and the majority of the 67 thousand imdb voters "dont understand good comedy writing" and somehow you and that very minuscule population of people who actually enjoy the film are people who truly understand comedy?

No one is going to knock you for liking a bad comedy. It's your personal preference. We all have our own taste in what we find funny and we don't find funny. But to defend a movie where the large majority of the people who have seen it has labeled it as a terrible film and to say we're all somehow wrong is ridiculous!

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

Wow, everyone needs to chill. There is no "good" or "bad" comedy. The movie was meant to entertain the people who enjoy this humor (ME!). Guess what? It worked! If you don't like it, then here's a hint: DON'T WATCH IT. That's not difficult. Adam Sandler didn't advertise this movie saying "Everyone who watches this movie will love it." So I don't see why some people are so angry about disliking the movie. Find one movie where every single person who watched it liked it?
Cruel? IT'S A MOVIE.
Seriously though, stop trying to argue over whether or not it's funny. That's the dumbest argument I've ever seen on these boards, and trust me I've seen some stupid ones. I love this movie, and thought the Hangover was okay. Think about Bridesmaids and all of the money that movie has made: I liked it, but one of my friends hated it. That's life, people. Some people think things are funny and some people don't. Everyone has a different sense of humor, it'd be weird if we didn't.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen someone write "If you don't like it, don't watch it", I'd have enough to buy snacks at a movie theatre at least. I'd find it EXTREMELY difficult to like any movie I haven't seen, but I can dislike a movie I have seen.

I thought there were some funny scenes (fixing the car, the arrow), and some that tried to be funny and fell flat (what was up with the laughter during a funeral, and the pee jokes?), but yeah, it's definitely not a great comedy, and it's a mediocre story, so that's why it gets a below average score. At least it's better than those (something) Movie "comedies".

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

My dad likes this kinda humour…and I probably would laugh when he laughs, some of the slapstick/toilet humour is so stupid u have to laugh!

What I find really funny though is that a POS like this can still rake in heaps of money at the cinema, there is a market for it, and there always will be.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

This movie is as funny as "Daddy Day Care", which means not funny.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

At least the Hangover was something new and fresh. Grown ups we have seen it all before i chuckled once throughout the movie. It was like each joke was so forced the first time, then when they try and do it again. its just lazy writing. 1/10

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

My sentiments exactly! You are correct!!

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

"Looks like she didn't get the memo."

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

OP. Please send me a link to the script of this movie. I will study it and attempt to suss out the witty jokes and learn great comedy writing.

I do not believe a script to this movie exists, honestly.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

This movie was pure crap. It always pisses me off for people to say nobody understands good comedy. Trust me, I have a great sense of humor but this film doesn't have it.

OP, please give us a synopsis of the plot. No? That's because there is none. It is random events of friends hanging out together that only they get the inside jokes.
Don't tell me the plot is getting the basketball game together at the end because that is not the plot.

To add insult to injury, they're making a sequel. I promise I will not be wasting time or money watching it.

Re: This movie was pure crap

I couldn't agree more, people laugh at this likes it's the funniest movie ever. I look at them thinking 'man am i a negative person?' no its just a know a funny movie when i see one.

I think the only reason anyonje wanted to see this movie is the cast. I mean you got 4 or 5 big alpha dogs of comedy, that have had there fair share of laughable movies. However, due to the absolute hatred i now have for some of the actors, i just couldn't believe the studio though it was a good idea to put out a seqquel

"There's no cure, for being a *beep*

Re: This movie was pure crap

Sandler is well known for having his buddies in his films but it seems like he made this movie just to have his friends in it.

Re: This movie was pure crap

I know this has nothing to do with anything, but…

"However, due to the absolute hatred i now have for some of the actors, i just couldn't believe the studio though it was a good idea to put out a seqquel"

Technically means that: 'Because I now hate some of the actors in this movie, I could not believe that the studio did not respect my newfound feelings and thought it was a good idea to put together all of the people I hate into another movie.'

Just being a troll.. but really, this movie sucked.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

Nothing funnier than making an idiotic statement like "people on this website don't understand good comedy writing" when defending a "comedy" where no comedy writing was involved. Sandler and friends had the audacity of hoping a funny movie would result from several funny actors just showing up to produce a movie. There is no alternative way of spelling C-R-A-P.

Re: This movie is funny. The reason why people hate it…

I like all these guys in their own movies. They act too stupid when they're all together. And the supporting cast can't act either. Lousy sh!tty movie and I won't be watching the sequel.

And yes I know comedy…. loved Animal House, Blues Brothers, History of the World, Billy Madison, Austin Powers (the first 2, the 3rd was LAME), Natl Lampoons Vacation, Blind Date, Multiplicity, American Pie, etc etc but this one is so stupid, the writing sucks, the acting is wooden like they did one take on everything good or bad that's a wrap! They over act, over ham it up which is obvious and not funny!

I'd rather hear these guys talk in real life then have them say everything that's edited for pg movie ratings. Yes and jumping in the water naked with freeze frame in the sequel previews is lame and amateurishly stupid!
