Shut Up & Sing : Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

About the Yale thing Bush had a C average and another student with a A average got bumped off since he obiously didn't have the same connections.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

I really hope that you have a reliable, impartial source to back that claim up

"Tugboats and arson.those are the only ideas I ever get from you guys"

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

Yep an interview with the man who should have gotten in but ofcourse could not since his father wasn't a bigshot. You should try a little research.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

I didn't ask for an interview from a person who could be ticked.

I asked for proof. I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just asking for proof.

"Tugboats and arson.those are the only ideas I ever get from you guys"

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

so what, because your pea says do not compute that as 'proof' it must be fake?

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

wow, wiction, creekballa asks for documentation and you make a joke about brain size. i can only imagine you're getting so defensive because you can't provide the proof.

i despise bush, etc, etc, but she asks a valid questionfor proof of your claim.

and btw, even with proof it's not that big of a deal. kids are constantly getting rejected from ivy league schools, even with perfect grades, extracirriculars, etc. and kids from wealthy families with c averages are getting accepted. that is the way legacy admissions work, it's nothing new. bush isn't the exception to this rule. it's happened every year probably for the last 75at least.

sounds like whoever this interview is with is bitter and wants to blame someone.

Re: Here's the bottom line on this issue

Everybody is so hell bent on defending the Dixie Chick's freedom of speech they miss the point entirely:

Yes the DC's have the freedom of speech and they exercised it. But then, so do their fans, correct? Not by getting on a stage in front of thousands, on TV or radio, or in movies; they don't get that luxury, so they exercised it in the only way could: by not buying their albums, thowing away their tickets, writing an email or posting in a forum.

Hollywood has the attitute that they, and only they, have the the right to free speech, the rest of us should just sit here with our mouths shut. Linda Ronstadt, Michael Moore, George Cloney, Mike Farrell to name a few.

So Bravo to the people who stood up and told the Dixie Chicks (and others in Hollywood) that we are here, and we have the same rights you do!!!

Re: Here's the bottom line on this issue

in my opinion there's a thin line between excercicing freedom of speech and illegal threats. but maybe that's just in my eyes? :|

Re: Here's the bottom line on this issue

"Yes the DC's have the freedom of speech and they exercised it. But then, so do their fans, correct? "

Correct.
at the end of the day, I see this film not about the statement they made, or about the fans, but about the DCs reaction to the fan's answering their comment.
i can't be bothered to get in a toe to toe with anyone about the right or wrong of the DCs actions, or the public's actionsthe only point is they did it, and now we get to see how they handled the backlash
its simply examining that aspect of it.

Re: Here's the bottom line on this issue

Oh, no no no no no. The real point is that, because Natalie Maines made a comment that didn't sit well with the right-wing, mouth-breathing, NASCAR set, she and the other Chicks received actual DEATH THREATS! And, for your info (as you obviously didn't actually watch this documentary), many of these same mouth-breathers said that she shouldn't have the right to say what she wants. How un-American is that?
And I'd love for you to supply me with any proof whatsoever that any of the celebrities that you named (Linda Ronstadt et al) have shown any attitude that they are the only ones with the right to free speech. All I've ever seen or heard is right-wingers bashing them for using the same guarantee of free speech that any other American (them includeddon't forget that!) has.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

george bush I am more ashamed

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

Patriotism in America in the 2000's = Nationalism in Germany in the 1930's

Why don't people think for themselves instead of following morons.

*POOF*

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

This has got to be sarcasm. :)

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

Typical American "Republicans" don't read or back up their opinions to prove a point. Hence this one here.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

I know something that will ease the DC's shame: George Bush isn't from Texas! :D
He is from Connecticut.

This is actually worse because he plays upon the well accepted yet untrue belief that he is from Texas to gain political support (or at least he did in the past).

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

Just go here to keep up with the body count: http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2003/iraq/forces/casualties/

As of today, here are the figures:
There have been 3,789 coalition deaths 3,513 Americans, two Australians, 149 Britons, 13 Bulgarians, seven Danes, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Fijian, one Hungarian, 32 Italians, one Kazakh, one Korean, three Latvian, 19 Poles, two Romanians, five Salvadoran, four Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 18 Ukrainians in the war in Iraq as of June 13, 2007, according to a CNN count.

God Bless the Dixie Chicks! I support them 100% and praise them for not backing down! I'm not ready to make nice either.

This war is costing $11,000,000,000 a day. Count the zeros that could be going into something positive for our country instead of killing people and destroying our image around the world.

Rock on girls!!! There are more of us out here supporting you than you may realize. Yeh, I'm an old hippie, and proud of it.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

yep, 3,789 coalition deaths and tens of thousands more of iraqi civilian deaths.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

Freedom is not for free. YOu have to fight for it every day. But you liberals are whiny quitters who are not willing to fight for freedom. Counting the numbers of dead soldiders is a cheap annd pointless tack. Thousands more soldiers die every year in training. In WWII many more were killed in a few days but according to your ill logic sacrificing the lives of brave soldiers to defeat Hitler was useless. What would you have done? Surrendered to the Nazis because you don't wanna fight for freedom. You just love feeling concerned about the world's grievances. But when the push cones to shove, you whine and cut and run. I bet Rocky Balboa was not a liberal because if he were, he would have thrown in the towel after round 1.

Well, done Heidi. Your painful grammar and cretinous spelling go some way towards confirming that most people who objected to the Dixies' stance have much like the president perilously low IQs.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

I think it is rediculous the way the they were treated. Haven't those people heard of free speech. It was horrible. I love them even more for dealing with that bullSh!t.

I'm ashamed for the United States to have such a stupid president.

2,790 American soldiers dead
40,000 Iraqi civilians dead
No WMD's
Gas prices highest in history
A divided nation
Went from biggest surplus to biggest national debt
Made a point to take rights away from Americans

it is horrible. Too many people have died. When will he learn

"I'm not so good with the advice Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

I think perhaps many of us are misunderstanding the nature of Free Speech. The ladies certainly had every right to speak their mind about political matters, and their fans had every right to voice any displeasure with the ladies' comments.

In America, one can actually state ones opinion free from government censorship, but not necessarily free from consequences from fellow exercisers of Free Speech.

(Obviously, refusing to buy a music album can be Free Speech, but death threats are not. Unfortunately both extremes of the political spectrum have followers guilty of that.)

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

What exactly is a "moran"? lol

I liked the response from the person who stated that the DC's have every right to free speech and their fans and consumers of their product, (music) have every right not to buy it anymore. I personally wish celebs would stick to entertaining us, not cramming their political views down our throats. And I am no Bush supporter, but I certainly don't insult those that are. I guess kindess and respect for others doesn't exist anymore.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

<>

I never knew that Republicans smoked crack until now. I don't think the Dixie Chicks are stupid, but I'm wondering about you

You think George Bush is doing an amazing job? Well, yeah, I suppose it could be classed as amazing amazingly BAD, that is. He's an all around failure and we'll be suffering the lasting effects of his policies for decades to come. Yep, "Drinkey Von Dumbass," as Bill Maher calls him, has certainly left us a presidential legacy debt, a ginned-up war, a war he's largely ignored, and a divide between rich and poor that's becoming unmanageable. And, through it all he has the audacity to believe that he's smart when he's just about the stupidest man in public life I think I've ever encountered.

But, I'm sure he's comforted to know that he's has kindred intellectual spirits in the Republican base.

I saw "Shut Up and Sing" this weekend, and I wonder how these girls stood it. If they had to listen to insults and the death threats and general crap from you people for three years, it's a wonder that they didn't crack. The fact that they're having the last laugh is just poetic justice.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

I think you are

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

People make it sound like the Dixie Chick forced their opinions and views down our throats, but that is a bunch of bull. The only people who they even said what they said to were the people at their tour concert at only one place. Then the media there got a hold of it and the media in the US got a hold of it and the US media exploited them and threw the footage all over the TV. Then people like Toby Keith, the people who turned their backs on on the Chicks (Radio Stations, fans, people in entertainment, etc.) helped with the exploitation. Yeah, they really just went on tv and told everyone they hated Bush, and if you don't like it, then they don't care. THAT IS NOT WHAT THEY DID PEOPLE! Learn to think before you speak as it always makes your point void when you don't.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

yes shame on her for speaking her mind. for exercising free speech. for using her mind. how could anybody do such a thing? (please note the sarcasm)

Bender: I was God once.
God: Yes, I saw. You were doing well until everyone died

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

Yeah, I would just like to comment with regard to this whole issue of freedom of speech. First of all, Natalie Maines made her infamous comment in London, England, where the U.S. Constitution has no jurisdiction. Secondly, I don't think that Ms. Maines is really all that political in the first place. It's just that Maines and her group have been overindulged constantly and let all their success go to their heads. I don't think of them as stupid, but rather clueless and, at times, pitiful. I simply don't understand what all the fuss is about with them. Some of their ardent supporters have too much time on their hands to begin with. If you want to talk about actual bravery, then let's talk about a folksinger named Victor Jara, who was tortured to death by the Chilean government just for singing about freedom, not spoiled brats like Maines and her cohorts. I have nothing against the President personally, I do believe he is a decent human being. I'm just not thrilled with his handling of the war. I do believe that the President was a little unprepared in having to deal with the insurgency after capturing Saddam. I also believe that the President was a little naive in thinking that he'd necessarily be welcomed with open arms by the Iraqi people. With the exception of elections over there, that hasn't happened. This may be just my personal observation, but I do believe that the President is trying to venge Daddy after Billy Boy defeated him as well as wanting to finish Daddy's job.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

I respect you and you difference in opinion.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

Just a question from a non-American. Are you saying that your Constitution does not protect an American citizen excerising their right to freedom of speech from political reprecussions in America just because they happen to make such a statement outside the borders of your country?

I'm not being sarcastic. I am actually interested in the answer from a legal perspective. I am from Canada and it seems as though we have headed in a different direction. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects Canadian citizens' freedom of speech from reprucussions in this country even where the statement is made outside Canada.

I find the difference a little puzzling because I have always been given the impression by Americans that an American citizen's freedom of speech is second to none. Is that actually the law down there?

it's the same in the u.s. we still carry our rights as american citizens when we are abroad and still carry the protection of the bill of rights. i'm not sure what the poster was referencing.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

Thanks, that is what I had thought originally but when I read what the other poster wrote, I started to think that maybe I was the one who was confused.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

I don't think they are stupid (now Sean Penn dropping for a visit to Baghdad to pal around with a sadistic murderer, that's stupid. Another page from Hanoi Jane's book How to Abuse and Exceed Your Constitutional Rights and Piss Off Even People Who Agree With You). But I must agree that Bush is doing an *amazing* job. Every time I think he has done the dumbest, lamest, most ignorant thing he can do, he (or one of his loyal cronies) tops it. Amazing.

Of course little is as amazing as the length of time Cheny has been repeating the two basic lies of the Iraq war (There are WMD's, Saddam was involved in the 9/11 attack) oblivious to the fact that no one but foam at the mouth right wingers believe him anymore.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

blah blubb.

To be honest, YOU are stupid and you better shut up & sing.

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

If you were an intelligent republican maybe I'd respect you. But you're just a dumb$%#. (to topic starter)

Definition of ironic…

I hadn't heard of the Dixie Chicks before, I guess thanks to my sheltered upbringng in the UK. I really don't care what she said and I have no opinion either way of President Bush. However after watching this I now want to get a copy of their music, it sounds great!

"Save le pom-pom girl, save the world."

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

Hope you were sarcastic, but in case you weren't.

Maybe the dixie chicks were smart they said in 2003 what most americans think now. Two years after your post do you still think Bush is amazing???
Currently I believe Bush is the most unpopulair president ever kinda tells you something.

Same old *beep* different day

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

I bet you feel really stupid now

Re: Dixie Chicks… I'm ashamed…

Here's the thing: they didn't have it in their hearts politically. They were also too immature to handle their success. It's also ironic that the Republican Party is becoming everything they used to denounce their counterparts for. I don't hate George W. Bush as a human being, but those two wars were poorly planned.
