Re: Why it failed
True, I'll give you points on that.
Get on twitter and follow joshua, this will all help his bid to hound sorkin into hiring him for the next TV show sorkin is to be involved with!
We probly need a petition, coz lord knows sorkin seems to need far more luck and, hardcore internet presence and good will, even with how bankable he is for quality content on TV.

Re: Why it failed
I was sure if the show was brought back for a second season, it would have featured Joshua Malina as a new staff writer.

Re: Why it failed
Actually it failed because it was a poor show. The episode where the guy who used to be on the Daily Show (Nick Corddry?) shows his parents around and his parents don't know what the "Who's on First?" routine is because they're from Columbus, Ohio encapsulates exactly why most people thought this show was pedantic trash.
I watched every single episode waiting for it to get good and it never did.
ONLY Aaron Sorkin fans liked this showIt will never come back because it was terrible.

Re: Why it failed
You're talking about Nathan Corddry, who played Tom Jeter. Rob Corddry is the guy from "The Daily Show."

Re: Why it failed
Nate actually was on The Daily Show, for a brief time. Late 2005 to mid 2006, I think.

Re: Why it failed
I think you're wrong there, the last few episodes were done after they knew they werent coming back so they tried to wrap up storylines, most of them even got delayed from being shown if i recall due to the ratings and moved around. The last few episodes with the two tom's brother/jordan's labour storylines were rivetting and great character storylines.

Re: Why it failed
The only reason I know the 'who's on first?' skit is from Rainman. I don't even think I've ever seen more than a one minute clip of the Stooges.
Re: Why it failed
I don't think I have seen more than a minute of the Stooges either, but I have seen the entire "Who's on First" sketch and I can say that because it was put on by Abbott and Costello and not the Three Stooges. However, I'm glad that you mentioned that because it just proves the point that Tom's parents' could easily not have heard of it before and proves that it was believable writing.

Re: Why it failed
1: On West Wing Joshua Malina joined in a later season I think, and that could have been the plan here. Good observation that he was missing from the recipe, though.
2: Agree - It was so not a "poor show"!! Just excellent writing and the greatest actors ever; this was gold.
3: But now that I read this thread I understand more about the perception of insulting middle America. The sequence with Tom Jeter's parents not knowing "Who's on First" was just bad and really rubbed me the wrong way. It demonstrates an out-of-touch mentality. The middle-America, middle-age demographic would be a most likely group to know that comedy history.
I hate the Stooges as much as anything, I turn off any Stooge sketch within seconds of being exposed to it, but I still know the Who's on First dialog Anyone who watches comedy telvision or movies would know this just from historical reference.

Re: Why it failed
What have the Stooges got to do with the " Who's on First " routine? It was Abbot and Costello who made that routine so famous, as any fule kno!!!(sic)
Incidentally Studio 60 was brilliant and Matthew Perry was brilliant in it as was the whole cast. The public would rather immerse themselves in pseudo-surreal rubbish like Lost than anything intelligent.

Re: Why it failed
ok - Abbott and Costello. I hate them equally as much as the Stooges, so I just jumped to the assumption from the previous comment that 'Who's" was a Stooges sketch. The fules may know this, but I don't. The point is that everyone knows the Who's On First dialog, even non-fans of A&C & 3-S and residents of Ohio.
This show's writing greatly surpassed that old dialog, thankfully, although I imagine Aaron Sorkin would say he was inspired in some ways by Abbott & Costello.
And Lost is just one of the most astounding pieces of dumbed-down trash to have lasted so long as a network drama. Maybe Jordan McDeere would have passed on it, but sadly ABC didn't. I just remembered one line of her dialog "If we put on good shows, I swear to God we'll make money." That was a wishful wink from AS and the show within the show.

Re: Why it failed
I just finished watching Studio 60 and I absolutely loved it, i'm pretty much fuming along with the rest of those who share my opinion. However, I have to wholeheartedly disagree. I own Sports Night and am currently in the middle of West Wing's sixth season, and one of the things that drove me insane was that Joshua Malina was in both shows. I don't know if it's just the way he plays the characters he's given or if it's the actor himself, but I find him to be ridiculously annoying. The second I hear his voice I cringe. I can't stand the condescension he exudes and I feel like he comes off as nothing but arrogant.
