The Middle : Most useless character(s) on this show and why

Most useless character(s) on this show and why

Which character(s) do you think are the most useless on this show. For me they are Kenny and Brad, Kenny is face is almost always hidden expect for this last week's episode, as he has almost always been seen from behind. And Brad I don't know what about him, but he just seems so boring, and I can't why Sue likes him to begin with.

Actually, Kenny's face has been seen more than a few times. The first was in "Tick, Tock Death," and we even saw and heard him talking.

No... The first we saw Kenny's face was season 5 episode 8. When Axl returned to the dorm room and forgot his keys.

Brad is a great dancer. Plus he had a lot of funny lines before he came out, where he was almost giving something away. He created the character that a lot of people commented about, one way or another, talking around him being gay - those scenes wouldn't have worked as well if Brad hadn't made an impression.

I saw the episode when the cheerleaders and the Wrestlerettes had a cheer-off and when Brad appeared from behind a human pyramid, it was a very exciting moment!

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

I like Brad as well. I actually look forward to eps he's in. I don't think he's boring at all like the OP says. And I have always liked that Brad has stuck by Sue through thick and thin. He's been a good friend.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

Kenny is clearly a mannequin in many episodes.

If you're being literal- no, he is not.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

Kenny is a decent choice. It wouldn't bug me that much if he never appeared again. But he's barely on the screen when he does appear, so it's not like he's hogging air time.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

Kenny reminds me of the mannequin that sat on a bench in the foyer on the old "Monkees" TV show. He's just there.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

I agree Brad is a good recurring character.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

I love Brad too. He is Sue's best friend and an important character to the show.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

I love Brad! He and Reverend Tim Tom are my favorite recurring characters. As far as useless characters, I would probably say Lexie and Cindy.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

In my opinion, Bob was the most useless character of all. Since the character's played by a well-known comedian, it's not unreasonable to expect something humorous. Instead, he just played a nebbish, and his story went nowhere. Planet Nowhere.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

Lexie is all right. I don't mind her. I could live without Cindy. Personally I couldn't date a girl that much taller than me. She towers over Brick. Surely there is another nerdy girl out there for him that is shorter. But I gather the writers must think it is hilarious about the height difference.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

Fine if you find Brad boring, but Brad is not useless, he is Sue's best friend and closest confidant. Who would Sue turn to when she needs a shoulder? Carley? That girl seems selfish in their relationship.

I love Sue and Brad so much, I'd be thrilled if they got a spin off after The Middle ends. I don't think it would be network worthy, but certainly would fit on on either ABC's Disney or FreeForm channel.

As for my opinion on useless, I'm not sure, it's hard to pick. Maybe Janet or Frankie's boss the dentist. I do enjoy the actors and they played their roles well, but the show would essentially be the same without them, which fits the definition of useless as I see it.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

What about Pam Staggs? Important for ONE EPISODE ONLY, then never mentioned again!

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

Pam Staggs is mentioned in a few episodes, but only appears in one episode played by Kirstie Alley.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

I thought she was mentioned only in the episode featuring her!

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

Pam "freakin'" Staggs was the reason Frankie ate Axl's clipped toenails instead of the Doritoe crumbs she thought she was munching on.

Frankie was so obsessed with watching Pam on "The Wheel", she plopped down on the couch after rushing home from work and scarfed down the nearest food.

That episode was fine, but yeah, the episode where she showed up and Frankie was kissing her butt, was so-so for me.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

Hutch is a pretty useless character.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

Oh my gosh! Brad rocks...& I think the "not showing Kenny's face" thing is intentional.

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

It's fine to not like the character Brad, but it's completely wrong to call him useless. If it was possible to have a genuine soulmate, albeit not in the romantic sense, Brad and Sue would be each other's. I personally adore Brad; his uplifting positive nature and unabashed earnestness is endearing and also hilarious. I would love to have a friend like Brad in real life, and as dark and naturally wry and sarcastic as I am, that's saying something! I am so glad Brad transferred to Sue's college as that undoubtedly means more Brad screen time, yay!

Another occassional character others might think is useless, but I love is the younger blonde hippish, free-spirit guy who works at the quarry with Mike - Chuck? I find him hilarious!

Re: Most useless character(s) on this show and why

To me, the only useless character was hippie mofo Jeremy and apparently they already got rid of him.

They don't really have that many characters, tipically they have 3 separate storylines involving the Hecks and about 5 semi-regular characters joining them, and they rotate them, you don't see the Glossners or Hutch or April or Lexie or Cindy or the quarry guys every episode, that's why (in my opinion) none of them are really 100% annoying characters (except Jeremy!!).

Although, if I really have to pick a character (other than freaking Jeremy)... I usually don't like the episodes with Frankie's mom that much. Usually those stories are kinda negative, they always bring stuff from the past and bicker and moan and get into a fight about traumas from the past. Usually they "resolve things" at the end of the episode, but the next time Frankie's mom shows up it's the same thing.

But like I said, they rotate those characters a lot and it's not that big of a deal to say "enough with this character"... unless we're talking about Jeremy.

Jeremy is the tree hugger guy, right? He was useless. I can't think of anyone else.

Derrick glossner
