The Middle : For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

I'm amazed that so many people are hoping and praying and wishing on a star for Weird Ashley and Axl to finally hook-up. Some have even said that she'd have a "make-over" and no longer be "weird" just hot, and this is why Axl would give her a second look.

Ask yourselves, what's what wrong this scenario?

Well, first, if Ashley has to have a make-over in order for Axl to be interested in her, that means she gives up a part of herself for him. So, he's in control, he's pulling the strings, when before, she was the one who dictated what happened. Besides, if she had a make-over and was a babe, she wouldn't be "weird Ashley" anymore, so the character would be RUINED.

Second, and this is the most important part of all, ALL of Axl's relationships have ended. They never even last a season, and they're over. This is already happening to April, who's slowly being pushed out in favor of Lexi. If Lexi hooks up with him, she'll soon be history. All those who hook up with the Hecks eventually disappear into the murky netherworld of forgotten and discarded Middle characters.

So, if Axl hooks up with Ashley, it won't be permanent, it will be truncated and over within a season. Which means Ashley will then join Darrin in that Twilight Zone of forgotten characters.

Is that what you guys really want? If you "love" the character of Weird Ashley so much, why do you want her to change and have a "make-over?" If you love her, then why do you want to push her off into the category of forgotten significant others? It's happened EVERY SINGLE TIME in the last 8 1/2 years The Middle has been on the air.

If Ashley and he were going to hook up, it would happen in the very last episode of the series. Otherwise, her character is doomed...and all because you guys are so desperate for a Weird Ashley/Axl hook-up. Wow.

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

Weird Ashley is just the best pairing for Axl. All his other girlfriends look like models from the JC Penny back to school catalogue. Weird Ashley is interesting and has a backstory that's never been explained. Why is she into witchcraft? Also she went to the prom with Axl 3 times, including Asl's biggest Sir Walter Raleigh moment of the series when he opened his arms for the crying Ashley. The following year, she rescued him when he became prom king but had nobody to dance with and whispered in his ear It's Destiny. They are also cute together, both with shaggy curly hair. And the actors have chemistry together. I would like a story arc that involved her using witchcraft, perhaps involving a clock with the hands on an odd number as when they first met.

I'm also rooting for Sue and Hutch. When Axl, Hutch, Kenny, Sue and Lexie were kicked out of the pit, they all spent the night in the RV. Axl and Lexie had a flirty interchange in the galley, but where were Sue and Hutch sleeping? They actually make an awesome pair. Sue has already shown interest in Axl's friends and has dated almost every young male on the show. Maybe next week's episode could begin with Sue turning over in bed and seeing Hutch next to her and smiling.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

Characters and people change. I had many relationships that ended before I met the love of my life. Axl really isn't much different than anyone else although the circumstances are exaggerated for comedic reasons. The writers could easily write in a permanent relationship and a happy ending for him. Who says Ashley has to change? Maybe Axl will be the one to change and love her quirks, that is also possible.

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

The way Axl and Ashley first got together is that Axl accidentally (Freudian slip) texted her to go to prom and then forgot (Freud again) to break up with her.

On a conscious level, Axl wants Barbie. On a subconscious level, he want's WEIRD Ashley.

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

exactly!!!

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

Regarding Sue and Hutch: She had a long dialogue ina recent episode how she likes coffee and is now a big coffee fan. Well, the saying is, coffee and cream go good together.

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

Dream on, buddy! Dream on.

For a second there, I thought you were going to write: Sue likes her coffee black. Just like her men.

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

I personally wouldn't mind them together. But don't kill me but I do think she should have a bit of a makeover. I'm not talking about making her like April or anything but just slightly less cray cray looking. Different hair, pluck those eye brows, and more.normal clothes (not totally normal).

She could come back into the picture as a changed character. It's been a couple years now

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

What I might is she would still be weird but less so. Her personality the mostly the same. She would still be very different than his normal gf.

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

What I might is she would still be weird but less so. Her personality the mostly the same. She would still be very different than his normal gf.

Why does she need to change, at ALL? Axl hasn't changed one iota, so why should she?

Her weirdness is what made Ashley so unique. I thought all you guys "loved her," but every now and again, I read how she's going to have a makeover and become "hot," and then Axl will want to hook up with her. Do you realize how fickle that sounds?

Why must ANYONE change to attract a significant other? Ashley should be herself, period. If anyone's in need of a change, it would be Axl. It would be MUCH better and show more strength of character if he actually liked her as she IS, not "hot" or with her eyebrows plucked and hair styled in a "hot" fashion.

I think you guys are so into "hot," you've forgotten what it's like to be a true individual. It's what's in Ashley's heart that counts, not how "hot" she is.

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

To be clear I don't love her as a character. I just think it might be a interesting plot.

I think she could be introduced again as a bit different. Even if she does or doesn't date him. I just think anyone who is as odd as Ashley actually do change a bit when they grew up.

Just something I have noticed about people.

But yeah you are right that people shouldn't have to change to be with anyone. I meant she would've already changed and not have changed for him.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

I'm the one that said Ashley could change and no longer be weird but be hot. Maybe you misunderstood me, but that change wouldn't be for her just to get Axl. What I was talking about was her growing and maturing out of being awkward. Haven't you ever seen someone who was awkward or weird as a child or a middle schooler but grew up to be pretty?

Ashley could still have her personality that makes her unique but blossom into a less awkward adult. And the thing about weird Ashley being hot Ashley was just how I thought Axl would describe her.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

Maybe you misunderstood me, but that change wouldn't be for her just to get Axl.

I didn't misunderstand you. But you're also basically saying that the only reason why Axl would give her a second look was because she's "hot," now. That's just as bad as saying she changed for him. What she should do is reject him, if he made any advances toward her. He's shallow and fickle, and that's very, very obvious.

As for "growing and maturing out of being awkward," has it ever occurred to you that Ashley's perfectly happy being an individual? What makes you think she's "awkward," at all. Because she doesn't fit your notion of what's hot and what isn't? And becoming "hot" would make her less awkward?

Keep in mind that from episode one of The Middle, Axl hasn't changed in any significant way. Yet, you're advocating a change in a character so he'll suddenly find her attractive.
Why not just let Weird Ashley be "Weird Ashley," instead of expecting her to conform to find her true love.

Is Sue any less "awkward" than Ashley? Is she "hot?" She's just as weird!

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

I don't really care if Axl ends up with Ashley or not, but:
There are a lot of girls who are late bloomers or "ugly ducklings" who grow up to be the beautiful swan. There were several girls in my high school who no one thought much of but once they hit their early 20s, wow.

Like you say, people mature and grow out of their awkwardness. They become more graceful socially with experience. Girls may learn to do their makeup effectively, and find a style that works for them. Like you said, the change isn't for Axl. Does anyone really think that Ashley is going to go through her entire life wearing a wizard cape?

I don't think her growing up ruins her character at all. We haven't even seen her for how long? Is it better to see her in a new light, or is it better that she is just off of TV?

As for Axl being shallow if he likes her now that she's "hot": Axl is already shallow, I don't see him being nominated for humanitarian of the year anytime soon.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

That's where you're making a mistake. "Girls may find a style that works for them." What makes you think Ashley isn't perfectly happy with her "weird" style and sees no reason to "grow out of her awkwardness?" WHAT awkwardness? Isn't it what YOU consider "awkward?"

I keep reading the word "awkward" on this board to describe her character. I never thought of Ashley as awkward at all. She's always done EXACTLY as she pleased. Ashley wanted to watch Phineas and Ferb, so she quit the Wrestlerettes. She asked Axl to the prom and got her own way.

Just HOW is that being "awkward?" Just because YOU see her that way doesn't mean she is.

And there's the crux of the problem. All you guys are mentioning how Ashley will "mature" and "be less awkward" and "learn how to become more graceful socially," without giving one thought to Ashley being perfectly happy with the status quo. What makes you think she needs to change AT ALL? She doesn't, you know. You mention her wearing a wizard's cape. Have you ever attended a Harry Potter convention or a Star Trek convention? I've seen many 40 year olds dressed like Klingons. Is that a sign of their being "awkward" or just fans?

Whichever way you cut it, you guys are all expecting some big metamorphosis from Ashley. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the writers, in their limited view, DO change her, and that Axl is suddenly interested. I hope that doesn't happen, I really do.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

I am one of the ones that thinks Axl will be the one to change not Ashley. Axl will mature to the point that he stops seeing Ashley on a superficial level and begin to see her for the kind and devoted person she always has been.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

ScaryMary makes a good point. The whole reason I hate the show Grease is because it sends the message that if a boy doesn't like you for who you are, then you should change who you are in order to get him to like you. What kind of message does that send to young girls?

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

Eh. It shows Danny changing for Sandy, too. At the carnival at the end, his friends are shocked and upset that he "turned jock" and he flat out said that he was going to do whatever it took to get Sandy.

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

In Grease, Sandy changed for Danny by becoming a greaser and Danny changed for Sandy by becoming a sweater wearing prep. If Weird Ashley came back dressed like Sandy in skin tight black leather, they'll have to move The Middle to pay per view.

Have they ever explained why her name is weird Ashley? Is it because she doesn't conform to social norms in small town Indiana or is she actually freaky?

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

Well, that's not entirely true. Danny earned a letterman's sweater for Basketball, but he didn't change his appearance, demeanor, attitude or the way he acted or dressed--except for wearing the sweater. Where did you get the idea he was a "prep?" Lorenzo Lamas' character was a jock/prep, and no way did Danny look or act like him.

Sandy, on the other hand, changed COMPLETELY. Not only did she dress differently and more provocatively, from head to toe (not just changing a sweater), she changed her hair, started smoking, and changed her entire demeanor. For some reason, she felt she needed to be a slut like one of the "Pink Ladies" to land her man. What kind of message is that to give to young girls?

As for the Weird Ashley part, the reason for her being "weird" is a combination of both your reasonings. But she's essentially a unique INDIVIDUAL, and maybe in Indiana, that's frowned upon. Certainly, I'd consider Sue just as "weird" as Ashley.

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

Would make a good series finale. Axl realizes he loves Ashley and dons a wizard's cape and goes to her house. She opens the door dressed, not as a witch, but in tight black leather. Axl (nervously): Ashley? Ashley responds, what do you want stud? Then they dance a pas a deluxe while singing you're the one that I want before getting in Axl's Impala and driving off into the sky while the entire cast, major and minor characters, including those who haven't been on in years dance and sing We'll Always Be Together.

I think Brad's head would literally explode if that happened, lol

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

That would also put the finale of The Middle squarely on Axl, and the show isn't about HIM, it's about Frankie and her family.

Come on, Mary. Are you really trying to suggest she should wear a wizard cape all throughout her adulthood? Should she wear one on the job? It's one thing to wear a wizard's cape in high school, it's another to wear one in the boardroom.

Sure, she could keep wearing the wizard cape, and that would be her right. But I don't think that would be the most socially intelligent path for her to travel. Brick wears his Planet Nowhere nose, but not everywhere he goes. I guess if she wants to own her own organic vegetable farm or whatever, she could keep wearing the wizard cape, but if she has other aspirations maybe she should drop it, or at least keep it for nonprofessional situations.

When I was in high school (back in the 70s), I used to like to wear a worn out old denim jacket. I could have kept wearing it to "retain my individuality", but I probably wouldn't have gotten very far in job interviews had I done so.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

Come on, Mary. Are you really trying to suggest she should wear a wizard cape all throughout her adulthood? Should she wear one on the job? It's one thing to wear a wizard's cape in high school, it's another to wear one in the boardroom.

Come on, Montro. Are you really trying to suggest that Ashley would end up with a job where she has to be in a BOARDROOM? An individual like Ashley would more than likely start her own business. She wouldn't CONFORM (like you apparently want her to do) and waste her time in a corporate boardroom. She's made of sterner, more artistic and interesting, stuff.

And let's be real, when you said she should ditch the cape, you meant FOR GOOD. You weren't talking about being on the job. I'm sure Star Trek fans don't go to their jobs dressed like Klingons, after all.

In your other posts, you talked about girls who go from "awkward" to "being swans." And my point is, YOUR definition of "awkward ugly ducklings" might not be Ashley's definition. You seem to think she's going through a "phase" of sorts. What if she isn't? She's been "Weird Ashley" for years. What would make her change...a need for conformity? Come on. I don't think you know the character very well, as she's been presented.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

She wore that wizard cape to high school, every day that we saw her, at least. She may well be creative, but to me that suggests a lack of common sense as to what is socially appropriate, or socially intelligent.

By the way, if you've ever seen the documentary movie Trekkies, there is a woman in there who wears her Star Trek uniform to her job every day (can't remember where she worked - post office maybe?), and also wore it to jury duty.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

but to me that suggests a lack of common sense as to what is socially appropriate, or socially intelligent.

Come on, you're just being silly, now. Socially appropriate? Socially INTELLIGENT? Have you seen some of the get-ups kids wear to school nowadays? And you're saying Ashley wearing a cape "suggests a lack of common sense?" What about a boy who dresses like a girl? Or a girl who dresses like a boy? Are they displaying a "lack of common sense," or merely presenting their statement of individuality? You want conformity, for some reason. Why do you want to destroy what made Ashley so unique? That's very sad.

By the way, if you've ever seen the documentary movie Trekkies, there is a woman in there who wears her Star Trek uniform to her job every day (can't remember where she worked - post office maybe?), and also wore it to jury duty.

So, if she's comfortable dressing in such a manner, and her job allows it, what of it? So she wore a Star Trek uniform to jury duty. That's not against the law or even against any dress code.

You're saying because some people think it's weird, she should conform to meet their standards? Wow, I'm shocked someone in this day and age has such an archaic attitude.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

Come on, you're just being silly, now. Socially appropriate?

I'm the one being silly? Why do you think it's so important that she continue to wear a cape? Kids make some unusual fashion choices, yes, that's why they're kids. How is it wanting to destroy Ashley by suggesting she might grow up and change her habits? How many adults do you see walking the streets wearing capes? You don't think that might affect their reputation?

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

How is it wanting to destroy Ashley by suggesting she might grow up and change her habits? How many adults do you see walking the streets wearing capes? You don't think that might affect their reputation?

I don't know if you live in a free society, but people in the US--where Ashley resides--can wear what they want. How can wearing a cape affect anyone's reputation? Why not just admire Ashley for her individuality, instead of clamoring for a "change of habits" and a "makeover" so she can fit your definition of "hot?" Come on. Frankly, I'm surprised you're even arguing the point.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

I'm not "clamoring" for anything, I don't even care if Axl and Ashley ever even see each other again. But you don't see normal people wearing capes everywhere they go. I don't think it's unusual to suggest that this is something she would most likely grow out of.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

Didn't you write that Ashley had every right to wear a cape, "But I don't think that would be the most socially intelligent path for her to travel?"

Why? And what is "normal?" Is it normal to have a piercing in your nose, your tongue, your eyebrow or through your ear? Is it normal to have blue or green or purple hair? How many people wear tattoos nowadays? I see them all the time and never give them a second thought.

Yet, you're obsessed with Ashley wearing a cape. It bothers you so much, you hope it's something she "grows out of." Come on.

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

Weird Ashley is not afraid to be her authentic self and I would hate to see her conform to society. There are very few people who are comfortable enough with themselves to be their authentic self. Think about it: Most of us choose what clothes we wear based on what society says is stylish and appropriate. We conform to gender stereotypes based on what society says is normal. In other words, we adapt to what society and our culture says is normal. Not saying there is anything wrong with that - I am just as guilty of conforming to society standards as anyone else - but most of us conform so much to society and family standards that we lose touch of who we really are. How many people out there can honestly say that they can identify what their dress standards, their interests and their behaviors would be if society didn't dictate the norms? The only people I can think of who are truly in touch with their authentic selves are very young children. If they feel like wearing a princess dress, cowboy boots, and a wizard's cape out in public, they will do it. I know plenty of little boys that love Disney princesses and think nothing about it. When my nephew was little, he loved to carry a purse around with him. As people get older, it becomes more important to conform to society than to be themselves. As soon as my nephew became old enough realize that boys don't carry purses in society, he quit doing it. You don't see any mentally stable adults walking around in a princess dress and cowboy boots because out society says that is not normal.

Weird Ashley represents someone who doesn't care about conforming to society. It would be more beneficial to portray her character as someone who is comfortable enough with herself that she doesn't need to change for anyone. I would be all in favor of an Axl/Ashley pairing, but I'd much rather see her influence Axl to be himself and stop trying to "act cool" rather than see Ashley conform to Axl's standards.

Re: For all you people wanting a 'weird Ashley' and Axl hook-up…

Lol, it doesn't bother me at all that she wears a cape.
I'm just saying that in reality, I think the most probably outcome for her is that she would outgrow the idea of wearing the cape everywhere she goes.

I see plenty of people with tattoos, piercings, and the colored hair is something of a fad right now. But I don't think I have ever in my entire life seen an adult walking around with a wizard cape, unless it was Halloween or something.

I'm not saying she shouldn't wear the cape (although I don't think wearing it to a job interview or on the job would be a good idea). I'm saying that most likely, in the real world, she would stop wearing it.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

I see plenty of people with tattoos, piercings, and the colored hair is something of a fad right now.

You are sorely out of touch, my friend. People with tattoos, piercings, and "colored hair" isn't a fad--they've been around for more than 25 years!

And yet, you're in a lather about someone wearing a cape. Ok.

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

Now you're twisting my words. When I said colored hair was a fad, I meant that it is enjoying some renewed popularity at this point in time. I never said it had never been around before. I remember girls with purple hair and other odd colors back in the 70s. As for tattoos and piercings, I didn't say they were a fad, I said they were common.

And if anyone is in a lather, it's you. You're the one who thinks her individuality and character would be destroyed if she were to appear onscreen without the cape. I will say this for the third time: I do not care if she wears a cape. I said if this is was the real world, she would most likely grow out of wearing it all the time. I don't know a single adult who routinely wears a wizard cape. Do you?

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

Excuse me, but YOU'RE the one constantly mentioning Ashley's cape. I didn't even remember she wore one, until you brought it up again...in EVERY one of your postings. You seem to think that because she likes to wear a cape, it makes her socially unacceptable, that she'll one day "mature" and develop "into a swan." Why? Because, in your view, people just don't "routinely" wear a wizard cape. They might have purple hair, a ring through their nose, a dog collar around their neck, but OMG, a cape? No way!

I will say this for the third time: I do not care if she wears a cape.

Well, that's unusual, after you posted stuff like this in ALL your postings:

Sure, she could keep wearing the wizard cape, and that would be her right. But I don't think that would be the most socially intelligent path for her to travel. Brick wears his Planet Nowhere nose, but not everywhere he goes. I guess if she wants to own her own organic vegetable farm or whatever, she could keep wearing the wizard cape, but if she has other aspirations maybe she should drop it, or at least keep it for nonprofessional situations.

And this:

Why do you think it's so important that she continue to wear a cape? Kids make some unusual fashion choices, yes, that's why they're kids. How is it wanting to destroy Ashley by suggesting she might grow up and change her habits? How many adults do you see walking the streets wearing capes? You don't think that might affect their reputation?

And how about THIS:

But you don't see normal people wearing capes everywhere they go. I don't think it's unusual to suggest that this is something she would most likely grow out of.

And finally, this--in your next to last post, you do say (FOR THE FIRST TIME) you don't "care" if she wears a cape. But then you add a caveat:

Lol, it doesn't bother me at all that she wears a cape.
I'm just saying that in reality, I think the most probably outcome for her is that she would outgrow the idea of wearing the cape everywhere she goes.

So, yes, indeed, you do seem to care an awful LOT about Ashley's cape. For some reason, it really, really bothers you. Why?

Re: For all you people wanting a "weird Ashley" and Axl hook-up…

So, yes, indeed, you do seem to care an awful LOT about Ashley's cape. For some reason, it really, really bothers you. Why?

In all of those quotes, I never said I had a personal problem with her cape. It doesn't bother me. I said she would probably grow out of it, because most normal adults don't go around wearing capes. No, I don't think it's the smartest choice for her to make socially. In fact, I'm not aware of ANY adults who go around wearing capes, Dracula aside.

I was not the one who came up with the idea about Axl running into Ashley again, not recognizing her because she had matured and changed, and becoming attracted to her before realizing it was "Weird Ashley" all along. Someone else came up with that idea, and that is what I was responding to.

In that scenario, a key component is that Ashley had changed. Presumably that means she would have gotten a makeover of some sort, she probably would have gotten a little better at making her hairstyle, makeup, and fashion choices. If Ashley was still wearing her wizard cape, don't you think Axl would recognize her immediately? Just how many characters on The Middle run around wearing wizard capes anyway?

I understand you do not like this idea about Ashley changing and making more mainstream choices. You think she should stay the same, and Axl should just realize her inner beauty was there after all this time. If that happens, I have no objection to it, although I don't know what we've seen of Axl to indicate that he has such depth. But the other scenario sounds more likely to me.

Well, at last you get it...somewhat. And yes, I'm afraid the writers will take the easy way out and change Ashley and make her "hotter," to use Axl-speak.

Not necessarily. This is The Middle we are talking about. If there's one thing we can say about that show, is that it's known for having characters that march to the beat of their own drum. Brick is in high school now and he is just as odd as he was in the third grade. Cindy constantly wears the weird hat and speaks in a monotone voice. Sue is in college and still dresses like she is ten years old and living in 1985. Speaking of Sue, we've also learned in more recent episodes that she is not as naive as we've been led to believe. She knows that she is immature, has no talent in anything she tries out for and has an unusual sense of fashion. There was even an episode where Sue bought some new, more stylish clothes to wear to a party and realized how uncomfortable she felt because she was not being herself. For me, the moment that I realized that Sue was not completely ignorant to the world around her was when Brad came out. The way she said "I know" indicated that she is not so incredibly naive that she couldn't recognize the very obvious fact that Brad was gay, and not only that, she had known it all along.
The other thing we can say about The Middle is that even though these characters (Sue, Brick, Cindy) do not fit into the mold of mainstream society, it has not stopped them from finding love. Why would the same not be true for Weird Ashley?
