Classic TV: The 90s : I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

I was thinking about this the other day and there are so many snacks from the 90's I just happened to remember

String Things they were similar to fruit roll ups but they were strings.

green ketchup, purple ketchup it was made my Heinz. It was cool to see but I wouldn't want to try that especially the green ketchup it looked like slime from Double Dare.

Die Hard lollipop I remember they turn your mouth the color of the lollipop. I was living overseas in Japan most of the 90's so I'm not sure if they had tht kind of candy here in the US.

I remember Nestle candy bar you don't see those to much anymore.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

Pez candies, Ring pops, Bubble Tape, Lunchables and Warheads are the snacks I most remember.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

I remember when they came out with the Pizza Lunchables. Having one of those during lunch made you the coolest kid in school lol.

I also remember Gushers, Fruit by the Foot, Shark Bites (fruit snacks shaped like sharks), Dunkaroos, and Bugles.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

I remember when they came out with the Pizza Lunchables. Having one of those during lunch made you the coolest kid in school lol.

For real, lol. Pizza in general seemed to be popular among kids, while all the other foods got the shaft.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

Pez have been around since at least the 1950s.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you rem

Yes, but they were still around and popular in the 1990s.

Actually....1990s still had a lot of things of prior decades. For example, 110 film is most associated with the 1970s, but it seems a lot of children's cameras of the 1990s used it. I bought one such camera recently from an online auction site, it has the logo of "Mario 64" printed on the top and the logo of Nintendo on the front. (I'm actually building up a nice collection of retro cameras including several from the 1990s, among them a Sony digital camera which uses floppy discs, plus cameras for the short-lived APS film format. Wish there was a thread on this board for me to discuss these cameras, I could even post pictures I took recently with them).

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

I think this was 80s, but Pop Rocks.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

I remember the pop rocks I think that lasted for a few days...lol. I remember the media saying they were dangerous and don't drink it with coke or any type of soda. I believe Pop Rocks are 90's candy

They still have lunchables in stores. I remember when the Pizza ones came out as well I think I took one to school with me when I was in elementry and yeah I did think I was the coolest kid cause I had that...lol. They were so fun to make.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

you haven't lived until you've had pb crisps. please tell me someone else remembers them. I almost went into a depression when they were discontinued haha, oh how I wish I could go back

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

Pringles (when they were good quality)

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

This is not a 90s food product, it came out in the 2000s decade.

I've noticed a severe decrease in kids snacking foods whenever I visit the grocery store. It's like kids don't eat this stuff anymore in their lunches I guess. There was a huge market for it when I was little, now I never see a snack food ad on tv. I think the not playing outside anymore thing has a lot to do with it.

I personally miss Munch Ems, I tried to find these a few months back only to find that they had discontinued them! Nooo!

3D Doritos and Planters cheese balls

Potato Stix

The 12 packs of snack sized chips

Gushers, Fruit by the Foot, and Fruit roll ups-I still buy these!

Squeeze Its-I used to love these but, like Dunkaroos they were always so expensive and came in such small packs that they were impractical to buy

I used to get Hi C, they were so cheap.

I remember shark bites! Kudos to whoever named those, they were really good..

I miss Berry Berry Kix and Rice Krispee Treats cereal, man those were good. I also liked Sprinkle Spangles, I haven't seen those in forever.

Not a 90s snack food, but I also used to get Little Debbie's, the brownie's and Oatmeal Creme Pie's were my favorite

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

@ITSA....the PBcrisps sound familiar I'll have to look that up.

@Felix when you said kids not playing outside anymore, what do that have to do with snacks? I'm sorry that just threw me off a bit when you said that. Anyways, I used to eat patoato stix but when i was overweight the first time when i was in pre-teen years I lost a lot of taste for some snacks. I tried a patoto stix a few months ago and wasn't feeling it. Gushers I never liked i didn't like the center I loved fruit by the foot and the fruit roll ups. I remember squeeze its my mom would buy those for me and my younger brother and sister, at the time my dad was in the military and at the commissary you could get things a little cheaper. Shark bites I loved those too. They still make those snack food cakes i don't think those would ever go away. Well i haven't seen Ding Dongs in a while i used to love those they were like eating a Ho-Ho but round.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

@Felix when you said kids not playing outside anymore, what do that have to do with snacks? I'm sorry that just threw me off a bit when you said that.

Well when you're a little kid running outside, you burn up a lot of energy. So there wasn't really much of a problem with kids eating snack foods in the 70s-90s. It wasn't until the internet came into the picture that it really became a problem. Sure video games made a lot of kids want to stay in, but video games were seen as kind of nerdy until Playstation came out imo.

I've noticed a correlation between the decrease in time spent outside with the increase of waist size lol. Anytime I see a kid outside, they're always sitting in their yards and the ones that do get to ride a bike or walk around the neighborhoods are doing it by parental supervision. Over parenting has made kids fat today. Kids don't feel safe enough to go outside and roam the neighborhood and there's no real motivation to exercise if it's a chore.

There's been a recent health food campaign (fear mongering) to try and counteract this and I think this has definitely led to the decrease in the variety of snack foods for kids. I notice more of a decline in kids' snacks than in snacks in general. You can still find 30 different flavors of potato chips in adult sized bags.

Things always seem better when you're younger, it's like your senses are heightened when you're an adolescent. Being overweight can be tough, it definitely ruins your taste for unhealthy foods. I also notice that when I give certain things up, I really can't stand them some time later. I stopped drinking soda in high school and I have no taste for it at all. Today coca cola just tastes like rust.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

I'm not sure about the over-parenting stuff, but I do agree that technology has led to an increase in obesity. A lot of toys (nerf guns, for example) actually encouraged physical activity. Now I'm seeing kids with tablets. The video games are much more immersive than they were in the 90's. Most of the earlier video games were too short, limited and repetitive to play all day and become addictive. The internet was slow and had little to offer compared to today. Growing up in the 90's, there was nothing to keep you inside for too long. I spent 90% of my childhood outdoors, but I'd probably never want to leave the house if I were a kid today.

Right that's my point that you don't see kids "action/outdoor" toys anymore because parents discourage their kids from exploring outside these days. So kids don't feel the need to go outside either and would prefer sticking to their computers and video games. It's funny how video games went from nerdy in the mid 90s to the number one selling industry for kids.

I'm not going to lie and say that some kids preferred to stay in. My mom used to have to drag my brother outside in the early to mid 90s because he would have rather been playing Legend of Zelda on his Nintendo. I can remember playing outside even if it was drizzling or it was 10 degrees outside. (we'd just go sit by the laundry vent and warm ourselves up). Even I started to feel more of a longing to play video games or watch tv inside than to go outside by the late 90s.

The call of technology was strong in the late 90s, early 00s. But I think the media also overplayed violence, kidnappings on the news too.

@ Felix

Ok thanks for summing that up. You are right that is something I don't see much of at all anymore kids playing outside or at the playground. I try to take my little neice and nephew outside to play on the trampoline, on their bikes, or whatever. I know my nephew he is 5 years old and already into video games I want to try to make him active. Today I think I've seen more over weight kids I really think its because of laziness back in the day if a kid was overweight it probably just ran in the family or he was just a chunky kid.

I also lost my taste for soda as well, every now and then I'll drink a sprite or 7-up to make me burp or for that bubbly feel.

Uh oh, yeah I've noticed an increase in "chunkiness" it seems even the sporty kids can't avoid. I remember liking video games when I was 5 but I mean Bonks Revenge was as good as it got. after about an hour and a half, I was bored and wanted to go outside. Games have such cinematic quality and complexity about them. I'm not going to say that type of stimulation is bad for kids. Storytelling definitely helps a young mind grow, so movies, books, even complex video games are bound to have a positive effect. The worst part is the sedentary lifestyle they encourage and worst of all the violence. I can remember sobbing at the moment in Neverending Story when Artax dies in the swamp, I can't imagine how traumatizing violent videos games must be to little kids.

Anyway, back on the subject, why should kids go outside if they're not encouraged to? My mom always made going outside sound like an adventure and where I lived wasn't exactly the best place. You couldn't walk around and I was pretty much confined to a condo complex. Still I was out everyday because I wanted to play outside. I feel like kids don't want to play outside anymore and because of that they won't. We've made playing outside a chore for kids.

I also lost my taste for soda as well, every now and then I'll drink a sprite or 7-up to make me burp or for that bubbly feel.

LOL that's my favorite part…I bought a pepsi earlier today for the first time in awhile. I liked carbonated beverages, I just think some of the main brands try to make their flavors so extreme because they know people used to it won't taste anything if it isn't. People become accustomed to large amounts of sugar and salt.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

Munch Em's (as somebody mentioned above) were AMAZING. The ranch ones were the best ever. I wish they still existed.

Magic Middles - those shortbread cookies with melted chocolate inside.

Bonkers (I kinda remember the commercials more than the candy itself, lol.)

As for drinks:

Hi-C Ecto Cooler

Orbitz - the water with the little jelly balls. NOBODY seems to remember this, however.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

I know how depressing! I wandered around aimlessly for 10 minutes in a grocery store a few years looking for them, only to realize they had been discontinued! I came home from college feeling nostalgic for them, so it was only a couple of years after I used to buy them.

I remember the Orbitz btw, the commercials used to fascinate me. They were always so sleek.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you remembe

I know the orbitz i had to look it up on youtube. That was a weird drink i don't think I ever had one I seen it in stores.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you rem

Yeah the were today I look in the cereal isle at the store when grocery shopping and its just plain...boring. I love how people took chances with cereal and made it fun for kids prizes are something I hardly see in cereal boxes. I guess today they have to be safe some kid might swallow it.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you rem

While introduced prior to the 1990s and not technically a snack, I recall that McDonald's Happy Meals came with cool things in the 1990s, including a cool toy related to (I think) the 1996 Olympics (it involved trying to flick a tiny ball into something). I live in Australia, and recall that toy continuing to be occasionally issued with Happy Meals for several years (usually when nothing else was going on), indicating that the Australian division of McDonald's had too many in stock and didn't manage to give them all away during the Olympics itself.

It's strange to think I was so incredibly amused by such a simple and cheap plastic toy.

I also recall with great fondness a Sonic the Hedgehog canned pasta thing, but I am not sure if it was late-1990s or early-2000s. I ate it even though the taste wasn't very good, simply because I liked Sonic so much.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you rem

I remember them! I clicked on the link, and saw that I had some of those toys. I especially remember the glow-in-the-dark trolls. But speaking of the snacks, I used to always bring Lunchables Pizzas for lunch in elementary school, and I would agree it made you feel cool. They also had Lunchables Tacos, Nachos, Burgers, Hotdogs and breakfast foods briefly. I was also a fruit snack kid. I remember dinosaur fruit snacks and the shark ones, as well. Then there was that soda called Surge, which tasted almost like Mello Yello.

That is so true thanks for posting that. When I was a kid in school I never brought my lunch to school I always had the meal ticket to eat in the cafeteria but I remember one time in the 4th grade I begged her to let me bring a lunch to school like some of my friends did. I think I had the sandwich just like on that article, some chips, something sweet and unhealthy....lol, I think it was the ring dings (wrapped up in foil).

I remember the bugles I used to do that with those chips and pretend that I had some nails.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you rem

Gatorade Lemon Ice - This was the best flavor! I don't know why they discontinued it.

Sloppy Joes - Not really a snack but they were very popular at school.

French Toast Crunch - They're bringing this one back!

Choco Taco - I used to always get these at the nearby convenience store.

Toaster Strudel - One of those sweets-disguised-as-breakfast foods. I loved to eat the icing separate from the pastry.

Ice Cream Snicker Bars - Yum! They sold these at my school and summer camp.

When you said French Toast Crunch I was thinking of Cinnamon toast crunch. I remember that cereal I didn't like it. Chaco taco...is that the ice cream shaped like a taco? I seen that in stores I know we stocked those in our ship store on the ship when I was in the Navy.

Really? I've always considered Cinnamon Toast Crunch the crème de la crème of cereal. The cinnamon-flavored milk it left behind was the taste of victory! But yeah, French Toast was a spin off the cereal. It looked like miniature toast.

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you rem

It's funny. Gatorade used to have an under the cap contest, and at the time, Lemon Ice was the only completely clear flavor. If you looked up through the bottom of the bottle at the right angle, you could sort of make out what was written on the cap. I discovered that trick and used it to win dozens of Gatorades of various sizes, a $25 phone card, a CD player, a baseketball, a couple of towels, and some other stuff. I was drinking free Gatorade for a year, basically.

Not saying that's the reason they discontinued it, but I have to wonder how many other people knew the trick.

Hands off the pie

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you rem

Really? You was lucky you won some prizes. I could never win prizes on items like that, like you said there was probably a trick to it. Anyways, I remember the lemon Gatorade, I remember some mystery flavored candy with Starburst and you had to guess what the flavor is and send it in to them and you would win a prize. Of course that discontinued.

Does anyone remember this candy called Dye Hard? It was a lollipop that have your whole mouth the color of the lollipop just like if you drank some dye. It think it was around for a year or so.

I don't remember that one. It must have been obscure. Back in the day, the popular lollipops were Blow Pops. I also remember Ring Pops, Push Pops, and those pops that came in a baby bottle (some weird candies came out in the 90s!).

Re: I don't think anyone talked about this but 90's food Snacks you rem

I loved 3D Doritos. The Jalepeno flavors were good, too. I remember in 7th grade, when I had braces and just had them put on, it was harder for me to chew things with the brackets at first, so I had to crumble them and eat them that way...Little Hugs are still around. I don't really care for those, but my younger brother drinks them...Minute Maid Juice Bars were sold at school, and I wasn't crazy about those either...Dunkaroos are also still around but very hard to find. Where I live, you can find the ones with vanilla frosting. One of my friends used to live in Texas and she said the ones with the chocolate frosting were available there, but this was back in 2011....I've also seen Trix Yogurt recently...The Push Ups, I liked as a kid. Especially the vanilla ones with the candy sprinklings.

I love Jesus Christ and am 100% proud!

I remember when Lunchables came out with a sports theme in the early 2000s, by releasing hot dogs and hamburgers separately. They each came with a chocolate inside, and they were wrapped with a picture of a basketball or baseball on it.
