She is just too stiff in this role. The character is supposed to be quirky and fun. Amanda Bynes was a better Penny, and Diane DeGarmo KILLED the role on Broadway!

I thought she was OK, but honestly I think this is one case where, due to how the character is supposed to be, she should have channeled a bit of Cat. Penny is supposed to be sort of cheery/bubbly and even a bit dense. But Ariana did surprise me and do a lot better in the role than I expected, given I was way less then impressed with her Thanksgiving performance in "You Can't Stop the Beat" (they definitely all held back for that at the time though).

I really tried to enjoy her performance, but all I saw was Cat Valentine 2.0. Amanda Bynes was far superior (minus her voice).

She definitely reminded me of Cat in this role. But I loved it. I don't think Amanda Bynes was any better.

I thought she did pretty good. She wasn't perfect, but she didn't do as bad as a lot of people probably thought she would. Her singing was terrific. Amanda Bynes did ok, but she's not the greatest singer and I thought she was a bit to tall for the Penny roll. Thankfully everyone else pretty much carried the movie.

This. She has a VERY weak voice for live performing. I thought she was terrible, and the worst in the cast.

Someone needed to remind her that she wasn't doing a concert, but basically a Broadway show. She was trying too hard to steal all the attention in every scene.

She was OK, but I agree she was the weakest link. She has a good voice, but isn't a Broadway type of singer, so that spoiled it a bit. She also seemed to have a hard time hitting her marks, she'd move into position and a couple of seconds later shuffle quickly to where she was supposed to be. And during the dance numbers, she seemed to watch the other dancers to see where she was supposed to be.

She is just another of those generic "pop" singers who will be largely forgotten in a few years. They come and go all the time.
