All the Days Before Tomorrow : Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

Near the end of the movie there was a scene where they were in Montreal in an unfamiliar house hosting a party for their friends. They both comfortably end up in bed and she kisses him on the lips goodnight. The end of the scene finishes with: MONTREAL, NOT TODAY. I'm gonna go right ahead and assume that particular scene was set in the future

Anyone else have any thoughts on where that scene took place?

If I'm right, then that scene is the only thing in the movie that gives me any closure and stops me from feeling totally, empty after watching the movie.

Great flick though, loved the familiarity of the general situation the guy was in Been there

"Bret! It's 1986 David Bowie from the movie Labyrinth."

"Yea I know."

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

I would agree.
Remember, that party was held when there was quite a lot of snow, and airport was closed when it began to snow. These details could be it. And of course, that obvious comfort to act like they were a couple. :)

-What's out there?
-An endless human stupidity.

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

I don't think that scene was set in the future, of course there's snow, but it's Montreal, so i wouldn't link it to the snow in the final scene just because of that particular reason. At some point Wes described life saying "everything's so random". The ending is open for interpretation, presumably a favorable one, the important thing being that the departure was delayed and they were able to spend a few days more together.

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

Your going to have problems convincing me that anything seen in this movie takes place after the airport is closed based solely on the title of the movie. She calls him up on the phone because she wants to see him before she leaves the next dayTomorrow. The rest of the movie is All The Days Before Tomorrow.

I'm open to hearing other interpretations, but if the day she is leaving is not the "tomorrow" the title of the movie is referring to, how are you interpreting the title?

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

It is really hard to question the argument of the title. There is however one simple problem with such reasoning. They met 2 summers ago, they went for travel one summer ago, where they did end kissing in hotel room. Afterwards she leaves so there is not much space for hosting a party inbetween. Why? 1. They definetelly kiss for the first time in hotel room, so there is just one winter inbetween. She left him quite upset last summer and when she did call she says she did not want to. Therefore I believe that the "present day" night is also the first moment they end up sleeping in one bad. Such reasoning excludes the possibility for the party night to be in the past.

And here I come with maybe stupid but a little bit different interpretation. There is blurred line between dream and reality in this movie so maybe the party is just the possible outcome that will never occur or maybe all we see is just one big dream as he has no pictures of Alison on the wall (and the apartment is suppose to belong to her parents) Alison appears in "Pakistan" as well which makes her somehow unreal character for me. Maybe i go a bit to pesimistic in this one cause i also really held my breath till end and wished them life together :)

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

There are definitely 2 distinct possibilities, 1) that like you said the party is a dream sequence or 2) that this is the future (or later). They way that you know for sure that the party is not in the past is evidenced by many things. The first thing is that they did only meet 2 summers ago in Montreal, and due to the time requirement. The party scene, if you notice, is held in what looks like a house, and is definitely not her parents place, so this means they had to find a place to live which would have taken too much time. The other distinct thing is that she has the same boyfriend for the entire movie, until that party scene, where Wes is her significant other. Now I don't think that there is a real blur between dream and reality, since all his dreams are in "Pakistan". This leads me to believe that they end up together and live in Montreal (which is significant for them since they both were the happiest together in that city), and the party is a Christmas party in the future.

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

I absolutely think that what we saw with them as a couple was showing us what would actually have happened. I figured this is the basic timeline of the movie:

2 years ago:
* They meet

1 year ago:
* They go on trip
* They kiss
* They part ways
* She goes back to living with her boyfriend in Tokyo

Now:
* She calls him up
* She stays the night
* It snows

1 year later:
* They're living together and throw a party

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

Boom! @thknave Thanks for that. The timeline kinda just makes sense to me. Of course that could be because I'm the eternal optimist. I might check out that party scene and see if I can see a photo of them together but as far as I'm concerned they got together. I love this movie though. I randomly flick through key scenes when I'm bored sometimes.

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

thknave,

You've articulated exactly what I interpreted from the movie.

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

i like that timeline, and it makes sense to me. kind of corny to say, but i took the snow in la to be a sort of "sign" that they were meant to be together. it was something completely unexpected and out of their control that kept her from leaving him. she seemed pretty happy after she got off the phone with the airport and found out that the closure was indefinite. anyhow, i think the snow allowed them to spend more unplanned time together and fully realize their feelings for each other.

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

This is the most accurate description of the timeline. Unfortunately for the non-believers, they do end up together. In the DVD there is an alternate ending, which is actually an extended ending. See, it shows them taking pictures, and smiling, and kissing, and things of that nature. If you paid enough attention to the film, in my opinion, it is clear that she is confused about her feelings for both of them. You don't just call this guy who you met for a while at 11 at night to 'chill' if you aren't feeling things out one more time before she leaves for good. It wasn't too hard to distinguish to me.

The original ending allows us more leeway and room to distinguish the symbolism in the movie for ourselves. Even before the extended ending, I felt this was the case from all I witnessed. And personally, I'm happy :)

I felt the characters played their parts so real and gritty that it would be as if watching them in real life. They love, they argue, they smile, they cry. It was a beautiful film, and I cannot wait until Francois Dompierre creates another beautiful work like this one!

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

oh man, now i want a copy of the movie even more than i did before, just so i can see the alternate ending. anyway, i always took fact that it she missed her flight b/c it snowed in a place that rarely sees snow to be a sign that they were destined to end up together. it was something totally unexpected that allowed them to spend more time together, which is probably what she needed, in order to make up her mind.

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

i agree. it reminded me a lot of a friendship i had, except the tables were turned.

Re: Did they end up together? *Spoiler*

I assumed the party in Montreal WAS the tomorrow referred to in the title. Another way to address the future? Tomorrow! So the title in no way "proves" that the scenes in Wes' apartment (Today) were the last chronologically that we are shown, as someone hypothesized. All the other scenes with them in the past had the word "Ago" in the labels; 2 years ago & 1 year ago. So we had Past (Ago), Present (Today) and Future (Not Today). The others were all the days leading up to the future THEIR tomorrow.
