No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is a weird state. They don't have liquor stores. All booze outside of beer is sold in "State Stores", which are indeed, run by the state. They don't have muffins or twinkies or Terrible Towels.

Beer is sold in beer distributors. They sell beer only, no liquor or even wine. They also sell chips, pretzels, etc. that you might eat with beer. I don't drink, so I've never been in one, so I don't know if they would sell baked goods or Terrible Towels. I guess Rebecca could have walked to one of those and tried to make the best of what she found. It only bothers me because it takes me out of the show and its very specific setting.

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

I'm in PA and I still call it the liquor store even though it is state run. Now it's called Wine and Spirits. I'm not sure if it's always been the same. Back in 1980 they may have sold other small things, I'm not sure because I'm the exact same age as the adult kids on this show lol.

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

West Virginia and Ohio are not that far away from Pittsburgh, but I can't see a heavily pregnant Rebecca driving that far.

A little word of advice, my friend. Sometimes you gotta let those hard-to-reach chips go"

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

As of last June you can buy wine in Pennsylvania grocery stores.

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

Not in my area yet. A handful of Sheetz have six packs and wine but not grocery stores.

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

And I thought Texas was weird! We can buy beer & wine in grocery stores but you have to go to a liquor store (that is closed on Sunday) for liquor.

When I go through Louisiana it's always weird to see liquor in convenience & grocery stores!

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

In Illinois they sell liquor at Walmart's and Target's

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

I guess this is state by state. In ohio we had state stores until about 10-20 years ago. Now, the liquor is in certain grocery stores that's sectioned off from the rest of the store. I remember we were shocked to see hard liquor in Michigan in run of the mill convenience stores

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

Oh yeah. I lived in Michigan for a few years myself.

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

If you want some bizarro liquor laws, come to Utah,

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

Im in philly and ive never seen wine in our grocery stores. Maybe it's in other parts of PA. Pittsburgh is like 8 hours from Philly and I sometimes forget it's a part of Pa lol

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

The best place to liquor is to liquor in the dark.

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

That's very true lol. I live in Philly and there are no snacks in the state stores.

Re: No Liquor stores in Pennsylvania

I went to college in Pittsburgh exactly around the time period of the story. "State Stores" did sell things like pretzels. I remember the "beer distributors" and thinking that was such a stupid idea. All it did was encourage one to buy MORE beer than one might have purchased if they had the choice to buy less. Instead of simply buying a 6-pack, you ended up having to buy a CASE of beer. Dumb dumb dumb.
