This Is Us : Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
What year was that lunch supposed to have taken place? You may be on to something, ha!

Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
Almost everything I have read says the pregnancy was 1980. I'm a nit picker, I know.

Ah, ha!! They should have hired you as a consultant

She would have ordered Tab
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
They should stick to Fresca. It's been around since about 1965.
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
I came here to post the same thing.
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
that's a good catch. There are other anachronisms (like the date of birth of Randall's report card and Kevin's recollection of the Challenger from 2nd grade). Also, some people who have lived in the area denote distance inconsistencies though I'm not terribly familiar with the geography of the Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey areas).
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
Yeah, the anachronisms are killing me. I know it's nitpicky, but Pittsburgh is nowhere near New York. Are we to assume that as a recovering drug addict, William made his way to New York so he could be found by Randall all those years later? Wouldn't he still be in Pittsburgh (especially since it's the same apartment!). Ugh.
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
To me the anachronism are disruptive, In one episode not only did Rebecca order a Diet Coke before they were available, (it should have been a tab of Fresca) but the friendly' s ice cream sign and store Jack drive past looked like they do after 2010 not like they did in the late '70's early 80's. If this show wants people to feel that it is set partially in the past it needs to pay attention to these little details that can encourage that illusion . Otherwise for those of us that are prone to finding them, the discovery Of anachronism Can overwhelm the emotion the scene is trying to convey.
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
I'm not that wrapped up in the Diet Coke thingher mom ordered her a Coke, and she then said "Diet." They could have brought her a Diet Rite, which has been around since 1958, or Diet Pepsi, in the marketplace since 1964.
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
William was living in Philly when Randall's PI found him
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
In Episode 6 "Career Days" on Randall's report card it list his birth date as 6/27/81. This of course can not be since they just celebrated the 36th birthday of the triplets. Also, the conception happened on Super Bowl Sunday which at that time was always in January. The babies would have been born at under 22 weeks. When seeing episode I knew this was wrong and has now been confirmed with Episode 12 "The Big Day" which shows on the calendar the due date as October 12, 1980 and the actual date of birth as August 31,1980.
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
I love this show, so I overlook the continuity errors, like
Dr K's wife passed away in July of '79 and has been gone for 14 months, meaning it should be September.
And the fact that "Ordinary People" didn't come out until September of 1980, either.

Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
Yes the whole Challenger thing bothered me because if Kevin was 7 going on 8 in January 1986 (typical age of a 2nd grader) then they should've been born in 1978. Either that or they should've said he was in kindergarten at the time.
And if they were born at the end of August 1980 then they should've been conceived around Thanksgiving of 1979, not late January 1980 (aka Superbowl Sunday). But sometimes the pregnancy doesn't happen in the blink of an eye does it? I was born June 5th but I think I was conceived around late August the previous year, maybe not exactly on September 5th.

Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
The babies were 6 weeks early if I recall correctly.

They were due October 12 which would have been a week short of 9 months after the January 20th Superbowl, but they were born 6 weeks early.
It's not unusual for multiple births to not go a full 9 months.
I don't know what they have to say. It makes no difference anyway. Whatever it is, I'm against it.
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
What does Pepsi have o do with Coke?
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
Not to mention the fact that these 80s kids appear to live in a late 70's world!
The styles are so dated!

Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
I know! Rebecca's hair in the birthday party episode was not how women were wearing their hair in 1990.
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
I was thinking the same thing, where were the huge poofy bangs and perms?
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
Lol, I'm sorry but after reading all the responses, I think I would go nuts if I actually paid attention to everything. If it were a murder mystery, & all that was dependent on solving it, then yes attention to detail would piss me off. But some of the things, like what they are wearing, the music, etc-my family had all that in the 80's. But I grew up with older brothers, who they themselves grew up in the late 60's, 70's. So we hung on to all of it. Actually I'm pretty sure a couple of my brothers STILL have too much of that stuff:)
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
This is petty but at Kate's Madonna birthday party, she was showing her father Jack how to Vogue which Madonna didn't do until the 90's which is also when her song Vogue came out; Madonna didn't do that particular dance move b/c I was a Madonna fanatic and Madonna was discovered when I started high school in the early 80's - the first song I ever heard from Madonna was "Burning Up" and it came out around 1983 along w/the video on MTV- I LOVED THAT SONG AND VID! Anyway there are a few things kind of off but still love the show and Jack, YUM!
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
There's no discontinuity there"Vogue" came out in March of 1990, and the birthday party was in August of 1990
Re: Attention to Detail/Wrong Year
Sorry my bad, I wasn't paying attention to the b-day date; my son always tells me that I miss "details" b/c I start doing other things around the house while watching my television shows is on, but it doesn't happen all the time. Thank you for letting me know I appreciate it.
*** I have to start sitting and watching my favorite television shows w/o getting up and doing other things. Well at least I can see my television from my kitchen, and I mostly start cleaning my kitchen but I still miss a lot of details, need to chill out and watch. Thanks
