Moonlight : Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I was absolutely shocked that Ali was nominated for a Golden Globe not denying he's a good actor but the guy is in the film for about 4 mins total. I read about all his nominations and the hype and I kept expecting him to turn up in later scenes. In my opinion the teenage Chiron and the older Chiron conveyed so many more complex emotions. Thoughts?

In this supporting actor category the award should go to Dev Patel for Lion - absolutely way more moving.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I do believe Mahershala Ali deserves all the hype. It doesn't matter how long the character is on screen. Viola Davis was literally in one scene in "Doubt" and she received an Oscar nomination. His performance was so powerful and believable that he is getting the consideration he deserves.

I do agree with you though that Dev Patel deserves a nomination. I also think Aaron Taylor-Johnson had an excellent performance in "Nocturnal Animals." So I don't think Ali will necessarily win but I think he deserves the hype.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Her crying! That scene has stuck with me for years! She actually appears in multiple scenes in the movie, but otherwise you are correct.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

"His performance was so powerful and believable that he is getting the consideration he deserves."

And what exactly was so powerful and believable about his performance? His little speech about not letting anyone else tell you who you are?

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

That speech was one of many factors as to why he's receiving the recognition he is for this role. Ali definitely immersed himself in his character and was able to exemplify the emotion that comes with being somewhat of a guardian to a child while also being that child's mother's drug dealer. It's an emotional role to play and you can tell through Ali's performance that Juan knows the difference between right and wrong although he's on the wrong side of the law.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

No way.

I saw Kevin Costner in Hidden Figures, and he gives a far better performance with far more lines and screen time. Compared to Ali, I'm surprised Costner isn't even being mentioned or considered to be in the top 5. I'm not saying he was "that good", but more deserving than Ali.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

William Hurt was in A history of violence less than 20 and was nominated

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Hurt had a 20 year career . Ali was good but a few scenes .

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

You have no idea what acting is if you thought Kevin Costner was a) acting; and b) acting well. No emotion in every single performance is not acting.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I haven't seen Hidden Figures but Hugh Grant was incredible in Florence Foster Jenkins. He actually was the soul of the movie.

I'm so excited, I think I'll brush all my teeth today!

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Love Hugh Grant but should he, and especially Streep, have been nominated for that movie?????

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Judi Dench won an oscar for Elizabeth; she was onscreen for 8 minutes. Ali was oncreen for 1/3 of the film. And yes, he deserves an oscar. That role crushed me.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Just out of curiosity, did you find Ali's performance more moving than teenage Chiron/older Chiron?

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

"Ali was oncreen for 1/3 of the film."

That's not really a lot in a 110 minute movie and I don't think he was even in it that long.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

wait, what ? a nomination for a little time of role ? this film is overrated asf

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

The fact that Ali has been getting a lot of critical acclaim for such a nondescript performance is indeed shocking. Like you and many others, I assumed and expected that Ali would show up again at some point later in the film, but that never happened. Here's what I wrote about his performance in another thread:

His "frontrunner" status is completely baffling. All he did in the movie was: walk around a little bit, sit around a little bit, drive around a little bit, chitchat with Little and his girlfriend, get in the water at the beach, andthat's pretty much it.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Haha yes totally agree!

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Thought his performance was quiet and somber and truly great however Im always on the fence on wether this type of performances deserves awards
Kind of like when Hathaway won her oscar for Les Mis, she was indeed really good but was probly just in it for 10-15
On the other hand a great performance is a great performance so yeah understand both sides arguments wise

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Judi Dench got nominated for a role in Shakespeare In Love and she was only in it for like 1 or 2 scenes. Viola Davis got nominated for Doubt and she probably had just the same. Doesn't matter how much time you put in, it's what you do with it. And why would Dev Patel be a supporting actor when he headlined that movie?

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

Review of the film here-

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Dev Patel is nominated for an Oscar in the supporting actor category, and he was nominated for a Golden Globe in supporting actor too :) I think he should have been nominated for best actor but I guess because he's only in the second half of the film that counts for supporting actor for the Academy voters.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

He was good but I don't think it was an awards worthy performance.

He is essentially Glenn Plummer's character from Menace II Society but with a little more depth and dialogue.

"Money's flowing, everything is fine; Got myself an Uzi and my brother a nine"

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I do. Thought he was excellent in this.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Yes I do. I thought he gave the best performance in a film filled with great performances.

Poorly Lived and Poorly Died, Poorly Buried and No One Cried

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Even though his screen time was minimal, I thought there was something so natural and authentic about his performance. It was the kind of role where an actor isn't acting at all and just completely blends into the persona of the character being portrayed. From the way he walked and talked, to the way he was trying to get the little boy to speak, to his interactions with the boy's mother, to teaching the boy how to swim and telling the story about finding your own way in the worldeverything felt so raw and real, like I was watching a documentary instead of a movie. And of course the scene where they're sitting at the dining table and he is struggling to hold back tears after Chiron asks him those questions - what an emotional punch to the gut.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Just saw the movie and when I left u said to my friend I hope the drug dealer in the beginning gets nominated and I'm so happy to find out he did.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I think you may need to learn more about time. MA was onscreen for maybe 15 - 20 minutes, and these days that's enough to be eligible for supporting actor. In the olden days it wasn't, then Judy Dench got a supporting Oscar for about 4 minutes in Shakespeare in Love. That probably was when everything changed. I for one think that choice was absurd, but I'm not in charge.

Now Michelle Williams is onscreen in Manchester for about the same amount of time as Mahershala Ali is, and both gave such wonderful performances, they really deserve a nod.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I thought Mahershala was better in "Luke Cage" on Netflix actually. And I think the teenage actor who played Chiron did the best acting of any of the men in the film. When he broke down in the counselor's office, that was powerful. He and Noemie Harris stood out the most for me.

Self-Respect and a hymen are better than friends and fun. Love, Mom-Amy, The Big Bang Theory

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I think he deserves the oscar nomination, it is supporting actor after all. The screentime isn't relevant. I thought one of the best scenes of the film was when he and chiron were sitting and talking at his dinner table. Very memeroble, very powerful. And a lot of it has to do with his performance.

But i do agree that the actors playing teenage and older chiron were both great. I thought Ashton Sanders should have been nominated as well, for lead actor, or supporting if his performance doesn't count as lead performance since three different actors play the lead role.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Regardless of the screentime, the teenage, older, and even kid Chiron gave more in the film. I don't get all the hype as well.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Mahershala did a really good job, but no. I don't think he deserves all the hype he's getting. Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes were both much more powerful in their performances, and both deserve Best Supporting Actor nominations more.

I say Best Supporting because, despite portraying the main character of the film, they are each only in 1/3 of it.

There is another reason to fill your heart with hatred.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

OP - thanks for this thread. I also don't see why Ali is getting all the hype. His performance was good, not more. I give the highest praise to Alex Hibbert, the kid who played Little. He conveyed so much without words and was true every moment. The actor who played the teenage Chiron, Ashton Sanders, was also excellent. Both were better than Ali.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

No he is the token black actor who will get an Oscar this year. After the white Oscars blackout for the past twp years you KNOW a minority is going to win. I prefer Dev Patel to win for Lion because he deserves it. This guy does not have the acting resume Dev Patel has. Patel is younger and a superior actor.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I'm seeing the film tonight, so I can't really comment on whether or not Ali's role deserves hype.

But as per the argument about whether he deserves a Best Supporting nod based on his screen time, see 'Network'. Ned Beatty is in that film for one scene that lasts about five minutes and he got a Best Supporting nod as well. When you see it, you'll know that an amazing and memorable performance is completely achievable in a small space of time.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Trevante Rhodes should have gotten the nod over Ali. Though I really like Ali as an actor and thought his small performance in this film was pretty dang good.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

not denying he's a good actor but the guy is in the film for about 4 mins total.
There have been several extremely short supporting performances that nonetheless were nominated for or even won Oscars. Hermione Baddeley was in A Room at the Top for only a little more than two minutes, and she was nominated for an Oscar. Beatrice Straight was in Network for under 6 minutes, and she won an Oscar. Size doesn't matter.

I kept expecting him to turn up in later scenes.
How could you have expected him to show up in later scenes? During the middle section of the movie, various characters kept talking about the fact that he had died. Since his character was dead, why would you have any expectation that he would show up again, except maybe in a flashback?

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I did like his acting in a few scenes and he was by far my favorite character. I wish he had more screentime dammit.

Lose the Game!!!!!!!

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

Totaly agree.

There were actors that were robbed for Supporting role on the past. Val Kilmer for Tombstone wasnt even nominated!!! One of the best performances ever for supporting roleCheck his performance and correlate it with Mahershala AliLaughableAnd Mahershala Ali is a good actor I dont mean the opposite

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

So powerful and effective. Lit up the screen in every scene. So yes

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

He doesn't deserve the hype, because it's such a small performance, but it's a really good one, and massively refreshing to see something of that nature gaining the traction that it is. It's just a shame all of the awards will inevitably warp peoples expectations going in.

Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

HELL YEAH!

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

No.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I actually think he kind of stole the movie. Like someone said, lit up the screen in every scene he was in. Very natural and touching, had really gotten under the skin of his character. A great supporting role.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

True.
He was good, but the movie wasn't so it wasn't a tough thing to do.

Re: Do you really think Mahershala Ali deserves the hype for this role?

I've just watched the film (I'm in Europe and the release is very limited) and this is what shocks me most. That late into the award season, with all the praise MA has received and how offended many people were by the alleged "snub" when he lost at the Golden Globes, I was expecting so much more from him in this role. I'm not saying I didn't like it. I did. It's a good role and he did a good job, but with all the hype it does turn out to be underwhelming. A few weeks back when I watched Manchester by the Sea, I wasn't sure Michelle Williams had enough material to play to make it worth all these nominations, but this is even more surprising.
