Moonlight : So in the Oscar nominations Blacks will be overrepresented…

So in the Oscar nominations Blacks will be overrepresented…

proportional to population purely based on this one movie.

Will we still hear ridiculous comments of Oscars so white?
Will we hear about Asians and Latinos being underepresented?

Or instead will common sense prevail and understand that with only 5 nominations for almost all categories it makes perfect sense on why it is highly unlikely for nominations to reflect demographics.

Re: So in the Oscar nominations Blacks will be overrepresented…

I don't think that will happen this year there are only a few that I see worthy of being nominated. Fences and Hidden Figures and I don't see this movie making it.

Re: So in the Oscar nominations Blacks will be overrepresented…

Go drink some bleach you racist piece of garbage. The history of the academy awards has been 90% white. A couple of black films are getting attention this year and your racist white bones just can't stand it. Do you have any bleach in your home? If so please drink it.

Re: So in the Oscar nominations Blacks will be overrepresented…

It's not racist to point out that there is a hypocrisy when it comes to these topics. Black people went all crazy when the Oscars didn't nominate any black people as if the Oscars are supposed to have a quota. It's a fact that black people are represented all over the media and other minorities are not represented at all. Asians and Latinos are not represented that much and latinos are higher in population. Now, it's true that a lot of latinos are white, but there are plenty of mestizos out there who get no representation at all. This film is going to win Best Picture to make up for last year's problem. And no, I'm not a racist. I'm as liberal as they come, but there is a strong hypocrisy in the black community. Even if they nominated Asians and latinos, but no blacks, the black people would still call it racism.

A few things

1. The population of blacks don't have anything to do with the acting population, directors and number of scripts. That's a false equivalency.
2. All of a sudden, people are bringing up quotas and talent as though nominations in the past are soley based on talent and quality vs campaigning and quotas.
3. The big screen is too stupid to realize what the NBA, MLB, Tennis and Golf already figured out. You include color, you bring in talent and money. Imagine what Tennis be like without Venus and Serena. MLB without blacks, Latinos. The mutha freaking lilly white NBA was dead until black talent came in.
3. Let the Asains and Latinos speak for themselves. Not sit on the sidelines and sneak in when blacks do all the work.

Re: A few things

Sport isn't arts. Blacks have never really shined in the film-making world. Let's face it, when it comes to film-making, blacks are incapable of producing films like The Godfather or Lawrence of Arabia. Just like whites are incapable of making jazz or playing basketball and other black dominated sports. The Asians and Latinos prove themselves every year, but they don't get the acknowledgement they deserve. They just don't go nuts about it, when they should.

What?!! You gotta be kiddin me?! Say that to these guys. Is this not art? Blacks invented Jazz, Hip Hop and Modern Dance. Even Rock n Roll. Say that to Jimi Hendrix.

Imagine what they could've accomplished in the States if they weren't discriminated agianst? You do know that Fred Astaire called that the greatest dance routine in history? No one has been able to repeat the stuff they did. It would take CGI and wires work to make those moves.

Imagine if the above artists listened to backward thinking people like you?

Amd by the way, you do know that it was thought blacks weren't smart enough to play organized sports or play the quarterback position?

It's almost incredulous how people like you don't get it.

Re: A few things

And whites invented classical music. What's your point? Film-making, painting, writing have never been a black thing. That's an undisputed fact. How many black-filmmakers can produce The Godfather or Lawrence of Arabia or A Clockwork Orange? None. That's my entire point. Every race has its strong suits, and that's where black people don't excel. As for dancing, are you kidding me? Every classical dance is won by white people.

Re: A few things

Stop being a clown and Google the Harlem Renaissance. When given the opportunity, blacks excel. Especially in the arts. If past, present and future artsits listened to negative people like you, they wouldn't have excelled. The masterpieces you mentioned can and actually have been made. It's been proven. I've given you numerous examples. As a matter of fact, people are calling Moonlight a masterpiece. Those films mentioned are masterpieces. White or Black, they can't be duplicated.

Time and time again. In ereas people claimed that blacks wouldn't work, they've been proven wrong. That includes film-making and other visual arts.

I gave you sports
I gave you music
I gave you visual arts via the suggestion to Google the Harlem Renaissance

Say what you want. The Oscars have gradually become boring and stale. Add black talent, and the ratings will go up and money will poor in.

@SergeVonn

Sport isn't arts. Blacks have never really shined in the film-making world.

Excuse me? The only reason black people and women didn't shine in the film business (for the longest time) was because it was dominated mostly by white men who deliberately kept anyone who wasn't white or male the hell out of the film business for the majority of its historyuntil the 1970s. Both black people and women have been making films since the dawn of the movies-ever heard of Oscar Micheaux, one of the very first black film directors? Or Alice Guy Blache, the very film female film director? Look them up, and check out their films on youtube. Both of them were making pioneering films long before Hollywood as we know it even existed. Not surprised you never heard of them, since film historians until recently acted like only white male filmmakers' work was worth writing about. So it was basically racism that shut black people and women out of the film business for years and years, not because of any lack of talent. There are plenty of books about thatfind them. White men do not have any exclusive claim on making films simply because they're whitethat's some bull**** right there. There are plenty of no-talent white boys who make films all the time, and still get their films pushed. Hell, even white indie film directors' films get more hype and distribution than most black indie films, who find it a little harder to get the same because they aren't considered "marketable"(meaning, since it's not about white people, the distributors think that it won't sellwhich is just some racist bull**** they have been saying about black films for years.)

Now since more people of color have joined the Oscar voting board(which was 95% white)films like MOONLIGHT, which normally would have not even been noticed (like most black indie films with limited distribution)are actually getting the push they need to get noticed. That's been so nice to see.

And the OP's claim is laughable and ridiculousthere's only two films about black people made by black directors even being looked at for awards. There is none of this "overrepresentation" they claim is thereshe/he's really exaggerating way too damn much. Give me a break.

Re: So in the Oscar nominations Blacks will be overrepresented…

Yes it probably will get a lot of nominations and black Americans will cry racism AGAIN. You do not see Asian Americans or Native Americans getting mad do you? Now Asian and Native Americans have a RIGHT to be mad they are hardly ever represented in film!

Re: So in the Oscar nominations Blacks will be overrepresented…

Why do people always use the argument that other races don't get mad when they are not represented or given the accolades they deserve and somehow that alone should shut black people up??? I just don't understand that argument.

Where were these other groups when black people were being mistreated, murdered etc? Most were busy claiming to be white so they themselves would not be targets. No one stood up for blacks so why should blacks be concerned about everyone else??

Hold your own nuts!!!

Cosign. Everyone likes to claim opression at their own convenience. Asians welcomed being identified as the model minority. Now all of a sudden they complain about representation.

Re: So in the Oscar nominations Blacks will be overrepresented…

Are you kidding me.

There HAS been outrage from the Asian American and Native American community about lack of representation. Maybe people just don't care to LISTEN when they DO speak.

Re: So in the Oscar nominations Blacks will be overrepresented…

It's an Affirmative Action year when they start passing out participation Awards to black films just for making an effort.

Ho-hum, here we go again
