Moonlight : Chiron's character development, Kevin, and the End

Chiron's character development, Kevin, and the End

I've seen this movie two times - an amazing piece of cinema. The first time, I was pretty much engaged in the beautiful cinematography. The second time around, I picked up on themes, more of the plot and character development. I realized, at least through my eyes, this movie was a story about Chiron: his development from a child to a man and his quest to find himself. Is Chiron REALLY gay? Or is it a symbolic gesture of finding oneself. We know Kevin has sex with girls - at the end we find out that he has a child, and is doing pretty well for himself. Let's go with the fact that Chiron is gay. Director Barry Jenkins said "moonlight showsour true colors" or selves - who we really are. The last shot of him as a boy is him finding himself in the beach at moonlight. I'm curious on people's opinions; however, of Kevin's relationship with Chiron toward the end. Do you think they become lovers, or is Kevin simply helping him out in a brotherly way? Saying, "Chiron - who are you?" A kind of, "what have you become" statement. Kevin seems much more open about himself - is he bi? He seems happy the way he was before Chiron came to see him.

Look forward to hearing everyone's response. 10/10.

Re: Chiron's character development, Kevin, and the End

I have no doubt that Chiron is gay. Thematically it's the only option. You're exactly right about the ending, Chiron finding himself. Accepting himself.

I'm not sure if Kevin was just experimenting when he was younger or if he truly is bisexual. I lean towards the latter. I don't know what will come of their relationship, it doesn't really matter. The point of discovering and accepting oneself is a pretty universal story, it's just layered with the homosexual and cultural vines. I really enjoyed the movie and the performances from everyone.

From interviews with Barry, I think it's accurate to refer to Kevin as being bisexual. He wrote the character under idea that Kevin and Chiron's encounter on the beach as teenagers was not Kevins first time kissing another male.

I dont think Kevin called Chiron simply out of brotherly love and I dont think Chiron drove 10 hours for a brotherly chat and pat on the back. I think it is highly possible that they do become romantic partners, but I dont think that it can become anything serious and long term if Chiron continues to be a drug dealer. I think Kevins newfound freedom (literally and figuratively) was so hard-won that he wont allow that kind of energy in his life and certainly not around his son.

Re: Chiron's character development, Kevin, and the End

I think Kevin will help Chiron become comfortable with his sexuality. I don't think they'll be in for the long-run. But, I see them lifelong friends.

I must warn you. I'm very susceptible to flattery.

Re: Chiron's character development, Kevin, and the End

I'm consistently reminded of a quote from the show Masters of Sex, which was about William Masters the guy who studied and did research into sexual interactions. It was sort of about how sexual attraction is a broad spectrum and it doesn't come down to gay or straight but what that person ends up meaning to you. Chiron to me was someone who never really had a lot of experience with love other than that scene with Kevin so it just seemed to me like Kevin had grabbed hold of a special place in his heart, one that was betrayed in the next couple scenes. Honestly that last couple scenes in the film is some really good stuff, I didn't know how Chiron was going to react to how both their lives turned out. Chiron just seems to out of place as a tough guy drug dealer and Kevin seems to have found himself pretty well. I'd like to think that the ending means that Kevin is going to finally be the emotional support Chiron needs and if sex comes from that, then so be it. It seemed almost secondary to the happiness of Chiron.

"I realized, this movie was a story about Chiron. His development from child to man and quest to find himself"

Took you 2 times to figure out it was a movie about the main character and his quest to find himself? Really?

The entire movie is about Chiron finding out and being comfortable with who he is. It ain't rocket science.

I think you're the opposite of paranoid, I think you walk around with the delusion people like you.
