Split : So who saw the twist coming? [spoilers, obviously]

So who saw the twist coming? [spoilers, obviously]

I think like pretty much everyone else who sees a Shyamalan film these days, I spent the whole film trying to work out the twist, and I have to admit it caught me completely offguard. And Unbreakable is my favourite Shyamalan film, so you can imagine how much I was geeking out to see David Dunn again, if just for a few seconds. Even when they started playing the theme music from Unbreakable, I still didn't catch on. I mean, I recognised the music immediately, but I didn't think there was any significance to it. I just never would've seen it coming. I didn't think Shyamalan was the kind of director who'd ever make a sequel to one of his own films. Then again, before The Last Airbender, I didn't think he was the kind of director who'd adapt an animated series, so what do I know?

To be honest, throughout most of the film I was convinced the twist was going to be that the Dr. Fletcher was just another one of Kevin's personalities. I don't know if anyone else thought that, but I was sure that's where it was going right from their first session together. Did you notice that we didn't see the two of them onscreen together throughout that whole scene until the very end? I thought that all of their sessions would be filmed that way (with only one of them onscreen at a given time), and the big reveal would be that he was talking to himself the whole time, and that the office and Kevin's dungeon were all one big house (which would also explain why they called attention to the fact that she lived alone).

They even said at one point that it was possible for two of his personalities to be dominant at the same time, so that's what I thought was happening during their sessions (two personalities sharing the same body at the same time, allowing them to converse directly). It also would've explained why she felt comfortable provoking him without fear that he might lash out (because you can't attack a figment of your imagination).

Even later on, when we saw her interacting with other people, I still thought she'd turn out to just be Kevin in a wig (and that what we saw was just his own self-image of what he thought he looked like while being her). I mean sure, in the past, that would've raised some eyebrows, but nowadays I think most people would just assume he/she was transgender or something and move on.

Also, did you notice towards the end when she goes to see Kevin in a taxi, the driver tells her she won't be able to get in as it's all locked up, even though Kevin is standing right there in front of the gate waiting to let her in (almost as if the driver couldn't see him because the two are one and the same person)? And when she eventually finds one of the girls, not only does she not immediately rush over to try and help like any normal person would, but she also covers her mouth with her hand in shock, and keeps her hand there (effectively hiding half her face) until the door closes, which could've been to explain why the girl (in her dazed and disorientated state) didn't immediately recognise her as being Kevin and was asking for help.

It wasn't until Kevin finally killed her (and Casey later could see the body too) that I realised I must be wrong and that something else was going on. Even now though, I can't help but wonder if all those clues were thrown in deliberately to throw us off the scent (or if it was just a case of me reading more into the film than was actually intended).

Anyway, now that we know this film is actually a sequel to Unbreakable, I wonder if that means Shyamalan is attempting to set up his own cinematic universe with numerous separate stories and crossover events. It sounds ridiculous, but then again, since Marvel everyone and their mother seems to be trying to replicate their success, so who knows? I know I for one love the idea, but I'm not sure how many other people would.

Re: So who saw the twist coming? [spoilers, obviously]

I was thinking that the twist would be predictable with Kevin turning into an animal with his shapeshifting abilities or he could have been a werewolf but that did not happen

Re: So who saw the twist coming? [spoilers, obviously]

Saying that Split's twist is a shared universe with Unbreakable is like saying Incredible Hulk has a twist because of its shared universe confirmation with Iron Man.z

"Saying that Split's twist is a shared universe with Unbreakable is like saying Incredible Hulk has a twist because of its shared universe confirmation with Iron Man.z"

Um, actually yeah, it kinda was a twist for Tony Stark to suddenly show up at the end of The Incredible Hulk. I mean sure, nowadays everyone knows that the Marvel movies all share the same universe, but that wasn't the case back in 2008 when they were first starting out. Many people at the time hadn't even seen the post-credits scene with Nick Fury in the first Iron Man movie (again, this was before it became common knowledge that you should always sit through the credits at Marvel movies), and many of those who had seen it didn't realise the significance of it. A lot of people take the idea of a shared cinematic universe for granted nowadays, as though they'd always been commonplace, when in reality it was actually quite a novel idea at the time. Not that it'd never been done before, but it'd never been done on such a massive scale involving big effects-laden blockbusters before.

Re: So who saw the twist coming? [spoilers, obviously]

Haha, tell me about it. There wasn't a twist in Split, at least in the sense everyone is talking about. So this film is a sequel to unbreakable. How is that a twist? (rhetorical). :p

well poop on my chest and call me smelly...

Re: So who saw the twist coming? [spoilers, obviously]

I actually thought I had it figured out that Casey was the host (for lack of better word) and that the doctor was 1 of the 23 and Casey had actually manifested all of personalities as a response to the molestation by "The Beast" who I assumed was the uncle. Obviously I was way off..... I do however have questions about the ending. Was Bruce Willis the Kevin character? Sorry only saw Unbreakable when it 1st came out and I don't really recall it too well

Re: So who saw the twist coming? [spoilers, obviously]

Yes you forgetful swine lol I nearly crapped in my pants when I saw him. The first thought I had when this started was how cool would it be for willis' character to save the girls like a joke to myself just cuz its an m night film... But I was under the assumption that claire was the host - basically the exact same thing as someone two or three posts up. When the music and the wheelchair into willis sitting there yeah I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Awesome.

You Suck...now deal with it.

Re: So who saw the twist coming? [spoilers, obviously]

I think this twist was kinda out there in that most people wouldnt guess it. Like the double twist in saw 2 when the house theyve been playing game in is same as the dirty bathroom but I wouldnt say thats a twist.

It does make sense to think bruce willia character could be in it because during the big scene in unbreakable he saves some young peoples life whove been "kidnapped", so i see the connection.

Re: So who saw the twist coming? [spoilers, obviously]

the imdb twist is they are closing the message boards :P

Re: So who saw the twist coming? [spoilers, obviously]

I didn't. I was looking for a typical M Night twist, but this was more of a reveal.
