Classic Film : CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS

The poll for the most recent year is something that zetes does. It's really a separate matter from the polls for past years -- or at least that's how I perceive it. The polls for past years are taking off for a month, as a courtesy, to allow zetes to conduct the 2016 poll. See http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000010/nest/262480043?p=2&d=262571276#262571276.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS

You are right.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS

I mean, what is the logic in asking people for a top for a year that they haven't had yet the time to properly explore ? And it just seems wrong to me to conduct a poll involving movies that aren't even available yet. How am I supposed to check out the movies that I missed in theaters in the past few months ?

It also gives a disadvantage to the movies that have come out late in the year, as less people will have the time to catch up on them compared to those that came out earlier. So it skews the results in that sense.

Well, since I am in Germany, I get to see most of the higher acclaimed US films that opened there in fall-December not before January, February, or even March since my country is one of the last ones in the world who gets them released. I should be the one complaining here. However, zetes is running this until the end of January, so I can catch up on those that open here that month. All the other films will have to wait for next year's poll, i.e. Moonlight, Silence, or Fences. So be it, I might just include them on next year's ballot.

Anyway, zetes is doing what so many websites, magazines, TV-programs, radio stations, critics, journalists, youtube channels, forums etc. do at the end of a year with all kind of things you can rank: Compiling a years end list. They are not an entirely new concept. I mean, come on, you surely have heard of this pop culture phenomenon before.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS

Yep I'm in the same boat regarding the february releases. But at least I should be able to see La La Land in time, which is by far my most anticipated.

Yeah I know, and that's something I hate : the obsession people have these days with reviewing the year as soon as it ends, sometimes even before it ends. It's all part of this annoying current culture of being obsessed with what is new. It's as if people care more about being trendy than actually taking the time to make a quality list.

I just didn't expect to find this trend on Imdb boards, where people really care about film.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS

Fine. That's your opinion, others see it differently and, can you believe it, have fun with these year end lists, after doing it for years. Nobody forces you to take part; you even have the right to ignore it. Free forum, free choice.

Stop hating so much.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS

It is a CFB tradition on January to do a poll for the year just gone by. Why we do it? Because it is fun. It is not like we are doing something significantly scientific here. Besides, by the end of the month every year, we usually have enough of participants seeing the major films to render a credible poll. Personally, the poll gets me to catch up on the recent films. So have fun filling up the ballot.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS

Hum I don't fully agree with you here. Sure it is for fun, and it's not super serious or anything, but it still has to be fairly representative otherwise why even bother making a poll in the first place ?

Yeah, that's always a nice aspect of focusing on a year I think.

At least you partially agree

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS

Great work! Very interesting how the top slots are so similar to the previous result.
