Nocturnal Animals : So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

Writing ONE book in TWENTY years? That proves what? That he is some poor misunderstood genius? That she's some evil monster for not staying?

I think Tom Ford has a misogynistic streak.

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

There's a lot more to this film, but given your economy of words I don't think it would be worth you exploring.

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

or was this the only book she knew of because she fully committed to her life with Hutton and never looked up anything about Edward? This book was dedicated and sent to her.

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

Soon, vengeance will come and she ends up in loneliness with no one to care for her. Soon, all her money will be gone and she will disappear.

But they haven't seen each other in like 20 years
so is he telepathic? how does he know this will happen at this exact moment in her life?

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

So if he knew her so well, how was anything she did to him a surprise then? If he saw it coming yet chose to stay, it's on him.
Man up or shut up.

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

There is a scene about susan's brother and their closeness to edward. Entirely possible a jilted man would keep updated thru him.

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

so is he telepathic?

He is not telepathic (I know you are just kidding though) BUT he told her that if she threw away their marriage she would regret it because she probably wouldn't get a chance like that againand apparently he was right. It is just a matter of him knowing her very well and knowing what life she was headed towards, which based on her mother and her own behavior was not too hard to predict.

I doubt it was happening in just that exact moment in her lifeit seemed things had been bad for a long time.

"Your petty vengeance fetish will have to do withOUT Mr. Groin!"

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

And what the hell does HE have? What life does HE have, that he spends so much of it thinking of her? BS. She didn't ruin his life. He was too lazy to do anything but blame her for his problems.

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

So it's about the termination.

The "poor man" spent twenty years obsessed with revenge for being dumped. He completed ONE manuscript. He wasn't going to impact anyone's life.

The whole movie was just another revenge fantasy for immature boys who think that by Golly, they coulda been great, if it wasn't for that woman who didn't Stand By Her Man.

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

We don't know how many manuscripts he completed, how many books he had published, how successful or otherwise he was in life.

He would have treated the revenge as a side project.

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

"Their" child, not "his". And it was one that was still developing in her while she decided to divorce this unsuccessful man for a less unsuccessful one. His writing a good book 20 (?) years later and her second marriage being unsuccessful, as second marriages often are, does not mean the only logical thing she could've done in life was to have stayed with a man she no longer loved for another 20 years. In real life, she'd likely get over the second guy, too, and find a third.

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

While I wouldn't be so blunt about it, you actually have a point. The story could have explored a lot more narratively but definitely didn't. Tom Fords first movie was equally beautiful but actually allowed an emotional connection to the character. This movie doesn't really allow an emotional connection to anyone, but tries to force one through circumstances that, frankly, a lot of people go through.

The editing, cinematography and music are all there, but narratively this movie ultimately falls short.

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

Susan and Edward grew up together and Edward's best friend was Susan's brother. I believe that narrative creates a strong bond. One that I can relate to very much without getting personal myself.

In Edward's story, because the family is attacked, Ford takes the time to show there is a good emotional bond between Tony and his wife when he reaches over and caresses her and she smiles back. That short scene should give the audience a small connection to the family. It might not be much, but we are already considering this family to be what Edward has imagined he wanted, so there's levels here which also creates some emotional ties. It's not just any family meeting their doom, it's Edwards and if you don't grow some emotion with Edward during this film I believe you'd be missing the point. Edward's character is ripped apart by Susan. That should be plenty of fuel to feel for Edward.

Re: So… his revenge is… SPOILERS

Those are some paper thin examples. I don't think we ever actually get an emotional connection to anyone in this movie, it's almost like Ford made the directorial decision to focus more on symbolism and montage than characterization through dialogue or interaction with the world. I definitely noticed a heavy use of montage, which was pleasant because it's just not used anymore, but I feel like he should've stuck to it instead of adding niceties for the general public.
