La La Land : IMDb free site is next

IMDb free site is next

With the message board ending soon, there will be little or no reason for most movie fans to visit this site.
I believe the free site hasn't got long to live, leaving only the premium IMDb pro site.
IMDb is a fans and inside industry site, but now is becoming an only inside industry site.
The fact that they are getting rid of the message board means they don't care about the fans opinion.
They are only going to care about actors, directors, studio executives, etc...
IMDb is telling to us "FU*K YOU FANS"

Re: IMDb free site is next

Well, according to the IMDb bossman the % of people using the message boards is tiny compared to the rest of the site.

I find the database a valuable resource for info on a film or series. IMDbPro is useful for industry peeps.

Re: IMDb free site is next

The OP is right, the industry wants total control of the narrative. They don't want different opinions going to the public.
boxoffice.com did the same thing last year, but the forum still exists with a different owner.

Re: IMDb free site is next

That doesn't add up because IMDb still plans to have voting and reviews.

Re: IMDb free site is next

Is there any evidence available that shows the relative numbers of people on the message boards compared to the rest of the site?

Their top value is $. If message board users amounted to a high % of IMDb customers it would make sense that this number would sway them to invest in upgrading the boards.

Re: IMDb free site is next

I just started in the last few months posting.

I will still use IMDB to get info on actors, movies, locations, soundtrack, trivia, and more ... i've been doing so since the 90s.

-It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything-

Re: IMDb free site is next

It will be used for at least one Amazon service. It's still a good place to check movie info.

Re: IMDb free site is next

But you will have to pay once the free site is disable.
The reviews will also end with the free site.

Re: IMDb free site is next

If the listings are still there then I have something to use. Who's in what isn't about reviews. IMDB will also be a part of some of the Amazon services/apps. I'm not worried about it. Some are wasting their time worrying. They instead could be enjoying these boards while they last.

Re: IMDb free site is next

That won't happen unless they are going to revamp the "Pro" site and change its nature. At present, the "Pro" site is not just a "paid" site - presumably, you are supposed to be someone "in the industry", through I am not sure they would/or could enforce that. It appears that the only possibility is to eliminate to "pro" aspect and just have a paid site - which won't be a bad thing if registered paid members could have access to what we had before in the "free" site.

Re: IMDb free site is next

You only need a credit card to be a "member" of the Pro site. I was a member and I'm not in the industry.

Re: IMDb free site is next

I seriously doubt many people is going to pay $20 buck a month for this site, unless they are in the industry.
IMDb is becoming an inside industry site.
The studio's has won.

Re: IMDb free site is next

That would be 240 dollars in a year. Depending on your profession and field, that would in most cases be sufficient to paid for subscription to membership in a professional association including perhaps even printed journals. People in the film industry or people who have really a serious interest in films might still join. But yes, most people would think $20 a month is too much.

Re: IMDb free site is next

That $20 a month for a website about movies?
I think most people have better and more important use for that money.

Re: IMDb free site is next

It's a useful resource mainly for people in the industry, with valuable information not made available on the free database.

Re: IMDb free site is next

luprki

Yes, I would not spend $20 per month just to get additional information about films beyond what is already generally available elsewhere. I would rather buy an extra Blu-ray per month, or see an extra movie.

Re: IMDb free site is next

I thought at first it said that a new site is next to appear..

Re: IMDb free site is next

I don't think so. Leaving it to premium users will only limit the amount of people which can see the advertisements put up. There's gotta be a better way to keep the boards up without having trolls. Maybe like a set of guidelines beforehand refraining people from putting "worst ever" or "looks exactly like" on the topics. Or perhaps have a badge under people's account like "trusted user", "veteran" and so on.

Re: IMDb free site is next

Trolls might just be an excuse and the true reason for closing the boards might be something else. The "Troll Theory" is in fact quite inconsistent with the other popular theory here (which was also suggested by the IMDb announcement) that the small number (or percentage) of people participating in the message boards plus the high cost of maintaining them. If the main concern was the small number of "clicks" or visits, then in fact trolls (no matter how you define them) should be welcomed here! Each "click" by a troll and each message he posts make as much "contribution" to these boards as yours or mine. Using "participation" as the criterion, even those numerous "new users" in IMDb and spam bots that recently flooded these boards advertising illegal downloads should be welcomed too! They added to the number of "visits" and degree of participation, meaning more advertisements!

The Troll Theory would be consistent with the profit rule only if one could prove that MANY people were so upset by what the trolls did that they left the boards permanently, so that the numbers visiting the boards actually declined because of that. That is theoretically possible but needs to be proved and not just stated. I am not sure IMDb has ever conducted such surveys or studies. For me, the last survey was years ago and I don't think this issue was ever mentioned. Still another possibility is that film companies don't like what is being said her about them and actors, etc. But that once again had nothing to do with participation rates.

Re: IMDb free site is next

Either way I wish they would keep the boards up. They were a good way to see what the general public thought of a particular movie or TV show. Wish they would reconsider this.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

Re: IMDb free site is next

They don't want to hear what the general public thinks. The only thing they want from the general public is our money.
