La La Land : I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

How catchy are the songs? How good are the dance numbers? Is there a story?

Why are you here if you haven't seen the movie yet?

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

This is similar to whiplash.

It is like someone crashing into the back of your car.

It's that man again!!

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Its nothing like whiplash Except for the style of direction/editing and other things.. But theme wise not at all. La La has Jazz elements, but it has nothing to do with the overall story/progression of the characters.. Whiplash it was all the movie was about, jazz. So Personally, i found lala a 6-7/10 as not a fan of the musical parts but everything else was alright. Very pretty to watch in aesthetics.. Story was kinda formulaic, and if nostalgia porn bothers you then it may get on your nerves..

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

The style of music is somewhat similar at times to Whiplash, both soundtracks focus on jazz. And the main characters face the same struggle in both films being "relationships or dreams." The tone of each film is completely different. La La Land is much more uplifting and upbeat than Whiplash. Whiplash has a melancholic tone from start to finish whereas La La Land has a whole mix of emotions. Both films are incredible and it seems like Damien Chazelle is a cinematic genius at this point in his career.

My opinion is that the songs are catchy and it is a great soundtrack, it is not my type of music but I found myself really enjoying the songs. The dance numbers are okay but the lack of spectacular dancing ability shouldn't take away from the story itself. And yes, there is a story but that is all I will say because you should see it for yourself.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

They're both about music, and you can definitely tell Damian Chazelle has a serious passion for jazz music. Though Whiplash is really more of an intense drama while La La Land is a lighter feel-good musical/drama reminiscent of golden age Hollywood. Though if you liked Whiplash, I imagine you'll like La La Land.

Oscar Worthy Superheroes:

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

It has absolutely nothing to do with Whiplash, either in tone or style. In other words, if you are expecting Whiplash, it will disappoint. The only link is the "follow your dreams" theme, I guess. Story-wise it's totally different.

This is an entertaining movie, nothing more nothing less. When all the hype dies, no one will talk about it. Whiplash is a modern classic already.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Thank you, sir. You just said it all.

Except, maybe, for the "entertaining movie" part.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Whiplash is a modern classic already

100% agree!

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Whiplash aims at your head where LaLa Land goes straight for the heart. Thinking v. feeling

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Whiplash is a masterpiece.

This is a disappointment.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

It's not a masterpiece. Good and absorbing film yes.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Stop correcting people's opinions.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Whiplash's screenplay is flawed. It went from being a movie about musical passion to some sappy crime drama.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Crime drama? Uh, okay

Also I think that you will soon realize this is my signature.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Not per se. But it lost its focus halfway through. And then the suicide-accusation (which is what I was referring to) part of the screenplay came in and I just gave up on it.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

I think you are significantly inflating the minor backstory concerning the apparent suicide of a conservatory graduate.very minor. The screenplay for Whiplash was nominated for an Oscar so it couldn't be too flawed or disjointed.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

"Minor"? The suicide was a pivotal part of the second half of the screenplay and the actions taken by the characters all revolved around it. Academy nominations and wins aren't the paragon of objectiveness. We've seen bizarre wins and nominations before (Crash winning over Brokeback Mountain, Forrest Gump prevailing over Shawshank Redemption & Pulp Fiction etc.).

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

The only similarity is that the ending to La La Land is like a slap in the face. The ending is unsatisfactory and depressing. The ending spoiled the whole movie for me.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

What got me into the theater for La La Land was Damien Chazelle as Whiplash is one of the greatest movies of the decade. It's clear with La La Land that Damien Chazelle, while definitely talented, is out of his element with this movie. A lot of musical sequences come off as awkward (the extras mimicking slo-mo when Emma Stone walks through the party in "Someone in the Crowd," the park bench sequence in "A Lovely Night," and just an overall sense of forced and struggling vocals in "Another Day of Sun,") and the pacing just feels muddled. The movie starts out fun and sweet, gets boring and predictable, then has a really good ending but is, admittedly, bittersweet. Whiplash just grew and grew with a ferocious intensity and ended with one of the most amazing endings I've ever seen. La La Land starts out okay, gets really good, falters throughout, gets bad, picks up again, then just kinda ends. It's a shame that this is the film he will probably be remembered for as Whiplash is FAR superior. It isn't even close. La La Land is still worth seeing as it isn't horrible as the hatred would have you believe, but it isn't anywhere close to the amazing masterpiece people say it is. It's a fine film that we don't get anymore, but after seeing La La Land twice, I have no interest in revisiting it. I've seen Whiplash many times and will still gladly pop it in whenever I get the chance. See La La Land because you want to, not because you loved Whiplash and expect something of equal quality.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

There are similarities, yes

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

The songs are meh (especially the vocals, as someone who studies vocals, it was the worst part of the movie). The dance numbers are alright. The screenplay is great though. Cinematography and art direction are beautiful, direction is great too. So I personally found La La Land better than Whiplash (which I thought was a very overbloated and disappointing movie) by a large extent. And the similarities are superficial, La La Land is a brighter movie than Whiplash which was overdramatical.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

I study vocals too. have for 16 years, operatic vocals.

The point of this movie wasn't to have gorgeous vibrato or to have perfect coordinated attacks.

Also I think that you will soon realize this is my signature.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

I realise that, but is it too much to ask for some support in 4th/3rd octave notes (from Emma/Ryan respectively).

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Whiplash is far superior than this movie imo but it may be different for you

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

It's not similar at all, except for one story element I won't tell.

The songs aren't great, nor the dance numbers are anything special, story likewise.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Nope, I thought this was nothing like Whiplash. The dance numbers are terrific and probably the best part of the movie. Yes, there's a story but it's told in a very non-traditional fashion and has some pacing issues toward the middle. Overall it's a good movie but if you're expecting something like Whiplash (which I also loved) then you'll be disappointed.

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

Whiplash was a mesmerizing movie! It was amazing from beginning to end

I thought La La Land couldn't be bad since it's the same director/screenwriter, but it was a very lame movie. Sorry, not trolling, but Whiplash was amazing, unique This is not!

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

I enjoy both movies. Even though both films feature great jazz composition, they are different in tone and theme. Whiplash is more of a music theme drama while La La Land is a romantic musical dramedy. The latter purposely plays homage to other romantic musical tropes of the Hollywood Golden Era (like Singin in the Rain, West Side Story, and Hello, Dolly).

So what else is new?

Re: I LOVED Whiplash, is this similar?

i loved whiplash i hated this and left and half an hour, i was so bored
