OT: Some noirs I saw recently

Nightmare Alley (1947) - A psychological drama with decent performances, especially by Helen Walker who plays a psychiatrist. The climax could've been done better but the setup is solid.

Mystery Street (1950) - A cut and dried police procedural with a tight script. More of these please!

Act of Violence (1949) - A brilliant film, with a wonderful screenplay. You think the movie is going somewhere, but then it stops at a totally unexpected point, before actually ending up where you thought it was going, and it could never have gone anywhere else. Robert Ryan is great as the wounded man, and Phyllis Thaxter makes an impression in a very short role and Janet Leigh plays a wholesome middle-class wife with gusto, even though she appears to be very young for that role.

Criss Cross (1949) - Sadly, didn't hold my attention much, even though there's nothing wrong with this film. The beginning of the heist scene was brilliantly shot. Some of the screenplays for these noirs are truly memorable.

Re: OT: Some noirs I saw recently

I got most of these from a list you posted here.

Re: OT: Some noirs I saw recently

I might have recommended that one but may be somebody else also did. I need to see Noir. it's been long. Robert Ryan's movie would do well. Any recommendations?

Re: OT: Some noirs I saw recently

Yeah man, I'd recommend Act of Violence. Have you seen Odd Man Out? I'd recommend that too. The climax is simply brilliant and so sad.

Re: OT: Some noirs I saw recently

It's amazing movie and I saw it in 2012-13 when I watches a lot of noirs. Mystery Street (1950) I have not seen from your list. How about that for a recommendation? Will try to find it.

Re: OT: Some noirs I saw recently

Mystery Street is a very straight police procedural. I like such films but I would hardly put this as the epitome of noir.

I recalled another Ryan movie, Clash by Night. Not really a full noir, but the cast is amazing, and it's directed by Fritz Lang.

Re: OT: Some noirs I saw recently

aj, strongly recommend THE SET UP. its only 70 minutes long.

ON DANGEROUS GROUND has a great score by herrmann. and its located in a really snowy place.

CROSSFIRE is pretty good too. it has a really nasty RYAN and a cool MITCHUM.

The Set up seems to be highly praised. I have it and will probably watch now that you recommended.

have seen the other two and liked them very much, Pimpin.

Re: OT: Some noirs I saw recently

THE SET UP is awesome man. but very depressing and has some violent boxing scenes. but a treat for fans of noir cinematography.

Yep, Crossfire. Did you know that the actual story was about homosexuality, but they made it about anti-Semitism?

Ryan was so nasty in it that I was actually putting off watching Act of Violence. But thank God I did watch it.

Re: OT: Some noirs I saw recently

and he played racist in a good movie of Spencer Tracy. He was terrifying in those roles.

dont remember much of it except that it involved a lot of marines. and i was very impressed by mitchums cool demeanor. MITCHUM is one of the coolest actors of all time. so damn effortless. just watch him in THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE.

I recall that you liked the review I posted of Eddie Coyle, and guess you saw it after that :)

Re: OT: Some noirs I saw recently

Re: OT: Some noirs I saw recently

Ha ha. Sure, anytime.

Speaking of cool, I'd highly recommend The Hit. Terence Stamp and John Hurt simply inhabit their roles. I'm sure you'll like this movie.

Re: OT: Some noirs I saw recently

i watched it on zee movies long ago. liked it a lot. that chick was great too. and tim roth. that spanish guitar soundtrack really hit the spot.

im thinking about getting THE GRIFTERS. love the film's score by bernstein. and i read the book recently. it was really sleazy and incestuous. you seen it? though cant imagine CUSACK in a noir film.
