Arrival : Amazing film, it's in my top 10

It's just a great script, with credible aliens (not anthropomorphic!) and with credible communication problems. I would consider this to be "hard sci-fi" and very effective in my opinion.

Nice to see a modern movie that isn't relying on pretty faces and multiple cringeworthy sex scenes. I also thought it was great. I rated it a 9 and there are few movies I'd do that with.

hard sci-fi indeed. watching this felt like going through a book by arthur c. clarke or stanislaw lem, in the best possible way a film can compare to a movie when talking about sci-fi.

So glad this got nominated for Best Picture. It's my favorite film of the year.

I agree with the OP. I also enjoyed Manchester by the Sea and Passengers (surprisingly on that since it was much better than I expected) and Eight Days a Week in the documentary category. Hell or High Water was disappointing. I want to see Elle which I hear is very good. La La Land is not my kind of film. Nor does Moonlight sound like it would be. But I am interested in seeing Fences, Hidden Figures, and Hacksaw Ridge. I suppose one of them in theory might surpass Arrival, maybe Hidden Figures. But I doubt it.

So yeah, I think this will be and is so far my favorite film of 2016.
