Arrival : Is IMDB compromised?
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
"Well thats like..your opinion man."
I think IMDB is compromised partially because of viewers like yourself, who cannot view a film objectively. The horror genre is specifically a victim of this. For instance - I do not plan on watching La La Land anytime soon. I understand that it is not my type of movie. Its just not for me. I could tell i wouldnt enjoy it- mostly because I find musicals eh. I watched the Artist when it won a bunch of awards and didnt like it. It happens. Will i go on that films page and give it a 1? No because that's unfair-and opinionated- rating it subjectively.
I've been told its important to judge a film for what it wanted to be. I think Arrival nailed the vibe it was going for - and definitely has much less in common with Interstellar and Contact than youre suggesting. We didnt get to see the aliens or their language in either of those films - (and i know im not the only one who wanted to). This film put a lot of effort into the alien language and appearance - and it shows- i thought it was very realistic in terms of what aliens might be "speaking" and even how they might look. It didnt come off as cheesey to me in the slightest. Did you watch a good quality version? Did you fall asleep? If someone says Terminator 2 Judgement Day is a bad film - I have to correct them.. ya know. Cause its not. (not saying this film is as good as T2)
The only criticisms I have of the film is that it somewhat drags halfway through and they stole the theme from Shutter Island.

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
The movie sucked because the second half was completely cliched neurotic garbage.
You build it up to be something, then go nuts in cliches, flashback/foresight, pseudo-intellectual musings with the depts of a stoned teenager, predictable political cliches (some would say propaganda) and the ever so thin ethical dilemma reminiscint of the Daily Mail Ask Alice.
I maintain this is a film, like Inception, made to make average intellects feel bright because they can give a step by step explanation of a weak plot ("wait, why did that happen"), while I understood it was just a weak pace/plot/direction obscured by pseudo-art house style.
This film is extremely predictable. It reads like a gradeschool level pol-sci paper.

See what I mean..? Opinions are opinions. Truths are truths.
I think Arrival and Inception are excellent films.
The fact of the matter is both films are ambitious, deep, and critically/ commercially successful. You're opinion cant and wont affect those facts.
Now I have to ask - what films would do you suggest I watch (sci-fi thrillers) of the last few years that do better? I genuinely do want to see them. Im assuming i am naive here. not attacking you.

Sunshine - but should be watched big screen.
Europa Report
The Martian
There hasn't been a lot of good sci-fi in the last decade, it is all doom and gloom zombie movies, so those here are just those few from recently I remembered.
If you haven't watched earlier/older films (you probabaly have), then begin there.
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
The Martian was an overrated, cliched piece of trash.
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Agreed completely with this. I think the Mark Watney character was pandering to low-thinking audiences. Especially when he says things like, "have to science the *beep* out of this thing", and all the neanderthals instantly feel a smidgeon smarter simply because they agree with this course of action.
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Great choices to suggest, especially "Sunshine". Absolutely loved that film.
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Sunshine was great until the moment it became a ridiculous horror movie.
However, the 2/3 of the movie which was not garbage was visually stunning and really captured the tension of space travel.

I loved sunshine but it did have a weird shift in the third act.

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
I'll check out Sunshine and Europa Report.
and I will agree that The Martian is a greater film. Not by a lot though. The Martian just had more going on- more intensity- and arguablylooked cooler. I'm a Ridley Scott fan before I'm a Denis Vilenvue fan. Arrival is a 7 while The Martian is an 8. Everything seemed very realistic from Watley's POV.
Can you further elaborate on why you disliked this film? I am starting to question it myself at this point. Not gonna lie. It seemed like theres about 40 minutes of film that is unneccessary. I still really liked the visuals, the non-shutter island song- and the acting. Plot couldve used some work thats about it.

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
I lost respect for your opinion just based on this. Europa Report is absolute garbage and The Martian is far from the best sci-fi movie.
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Are you actually serious?
You went on a raging rant about how dumb and cliche this film is (I seriously doubt you understand the premise, which is why you probably missed the climax) and then a movie that you list as a better sci-fi is The Martian? What?
I can't speak about the book (I've heard great things) but The Martian was a cliche piece of crap. Cliche drama, mediocre acting, predictable ending, and overly dramatic music. The way NASA was portrayed had me laughing at the edge of my seat!
Europa Report was interesting, but come on You think that ending was more intelligent then Arrival? If so, I'd like you to explain the complexity of both and how they compare.
You seem to be extremely confused.

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Martian was pretty *beep* Your credibility just tanked there.
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Sunshine: beautiful film with an idiotic premise. There isn't enough fissile material on the Earth to make a dent in the sun's fusion reactor. The visuals are stunning, and they made a general effort to convey things accurately, but much of what they went out of their way to convey was absurdly inaccurate. Consider when Capa witnesses the ignition of the device. It slowly expands toward him. The idea being that the immense gravitational field has slowed time. Except for one problem: he is within that time distortion. He wouldn't witness the slow expansion, it would appear to be near-real-time for him.
Europa Report: decent, but rather silly. A definite B movie.
The Martian: again, the premise is idiotic. The atmosphere on Mars isn't thick enough for a storm to do any damage to a structure (but at least the author has conceded that). Too much xkcd pandering. You complain about making average people feel smart, that's The Martian in a nutshell. It's a Dan Brown book for science.
Contact is probably the best alien-contact film ever made, and the book is ten times better. Moon is probably the best sci-fi *film* in the last decade. You're never going to see truly ambitious sci-fi films, since you just can't convey enough information in the medium. Contact, A Mote in God's Eye, and Pushing Ice are probably the best alien interaction books I've read.

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Really? No mention of 2001? Every director from Scorcese to Nolan agrees that's the best sci Fi "alien" movie. Contact was great - but to put it above 2001 is highly questionable. Lets not forget about Solaris either that ending tho
Really looking forward to Sunshine now. Love Boyle.

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Not mentioning obvious stuff like Martian or Interstellar or Ex Machina, but to add to that guy's short list:
Moon! http://www.imdb.com/board/11182345/
To me, Cargo (http://www.imdb.com/board/10381940/) was on similar level to Sunshine, less neurotic. And if you like one room sci-fi, then Coherence or Man from Earth, or the awesome Exam :)
There's also been a good chunk of time travel stuff. Time Lapse (http://www.imdb.com/board/12669336/), Predestination (http://www.imdb.com/board/12397535/), Primer (http://www.imdb.com/board/10390384/) First two are all about paradoxes and inevitability, so I mentioned them in the context of Arrival. The last one has a number of time branches impossible to follow in one viewing, but I just had to include it :)

Maybe you're a Maoist-worshipping troll, so you didn't like seein your murderous government portrayed as the bad guys they are. I'm surprised the commies allowed its release in Maoland. Possibly a different version was filmed for them since Hollywood has been selling its soul to the red yellow devils.

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
The thing is, I love the director and these types of movies. And I realllly wanted to like this film. And I normally agree with IMDB ratings. I loved the story line with the aliens. But there was way, way too much story intertwined with her personal life.
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
they stole the theme from Shutter Island.
Story of your Life, which Arrival is based on was written in 1998. Shutter Island, the book, was written in 2000s.
You should check facts before posting, cos it makes you look very very ignorant and renders an otherwise passable comment into negative "noise" territory.
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
So youre saying the soundtrack was written alongside the book in 1998? Did the Story of Your Life book actually mention that song?
If not youre the ignorant one. Shutter Island FILM was made first, and clearly used that song. Arrival FILM was made years later and used the same song. So quit being a dick and sit down.

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Are we talking about the same thing? You mentioned theme, not soundtrack. One is a filmic term indicating central or overarching plot while the other is a composed aural overture or collection of separate songpieces.
Don't be so rude and sensitive, especially when you were unclear to begin with. Let's handle this discussion with some dignity, shall we? It's nothing to get upset about.
Good day to you.

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Shutter Island doesnt share a symbolic theme with Arrival. Thats clearly not what I was talking about. THEME like The Jaws theme, Star Wars Theme, James Bond ThemeUse context before posting a comment calling someone ignorant,,, "it makes you sound static" lol step down. "lets handle this discussion with dignity" man again - you came out guns blazing not even aware of the discussion. If you saw both films you would KNOW right off the bat they used the same exact song. Yet you act like you know what youre talking about. Arrival uses it right in the beginning. Its used SEVERAL times in both films credits included. So no, its not that "we arent talking about the same thing" its that you didnt know what you were saying. Not usually this harsh but in this case you deserve it. Re-read your comments.
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Both films explore temporal distortion, certainly uses a lot of non-linear editing. So these are relevant themes belonging within the discussion, sure. Don't assume everyone sees things the way you do, because there are other opinions too. Like I said, this is a sign of ignorance. So that observation still stands.
Those examples are clearly well established. If someone starting talking about The Split Theme, or The Lion Theme, the first interpretation would be central thematic arcs/plots. As a filmic studies graduate, these mistakes in mise-en-scene terms can cost you.
Frankly, It doesn't concern me whether you think these are the same aural composition, I am just highlighting and responding to what you said. Sorry, I'm still standing by what I said. You said something that was vague and unclear. And to this point, you have not really proven anything otherwise.
That's all. Once again, I've made my point without turning aggressive. You should try it sometime.
I've said all I needed to say, I will unfortunately no longer be responding to this. Anything else you can add to this is probably irrelevant anyway.
So yeah, bye!

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
I hope you are aware that you immediately turned aggressive and started saying my comment was ignorant and is viewed as "static".
Do you remember saying this? Or have you blocked this out of your memory to hide your initial wrong doing? That is - by definition - aggressive. Nobody was being hostile towards another at this point. I am only doing this in hopes you can learn from it.
aggressive
resiv/
adjective
ready or likely to attack or confront; characterized by or resulting from aggression.
"he's very uncooperative and aggressive"
synonyms: hostile, belligerent, bellicose, antagonistic, truculent; More
You could have easily asked what I meant by theme (though I thought it was rather obvious given the context), but you only waited til after you assumed. Its OK to admit you are wrong bud. Learn to swallow your pride. Make IMDB a good place to discuss film.

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Stay clear of any man who uses advanced editing in his posts. Shill scum.
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
I think IMDB is compromised partially because of viewers like yourself, who cannot view a film objectively.
There is no such thing as objective viewing of films. Even in science there is great difficulty in removing subjective views out of a research paper, so talking about objective viewing of films is way too ridiculous. The only thing I can think of being viewed really objectively is pure math.
Fanboy : a person who does not think while watching.
Re: Is IMDB compromised?
Not at all man.
Subjective person going to watch Toy Story: "this is a cartoon?? Must be childish. I won't like it"
Objectively: "I'll take this movie in for what it is. I'll cast judgement when it is finished"
It really just comes down to having an open mind.

Re: Is IMDB compromised?
While I definitely respect your stance on not giving The Artist a 1 just because you didn't like it, I still think that subjective evaluation is the only way people could evaluate things like films. Because that's the only honest way we're capable of. The rest would be just trying to guess what the film is worth, assuming some artistic value you were simply incapable to see and enjoy, which is basically listening to those who say that they've seen that value and rate it highly.
On the other hand, giving a film like The Artist a 1 simply because you didn't like it is ridiculous. It's like calling a woman ugly simply because she's not exactly in your taste. So while I do think that we must be subjective in our evaluation of films, it should not be done on the "I liked it/I disliked it" basis. Instead, we should be honest with the merits we see in the film. Like, I might dislike a certain actor or find the plot making no sense, but if the acting itself is decent or the cinematography is beautiful, then some points the movie still deserves.
I'm definitely not gonna start a holy war claiming that my system is the only one worth using. But it's definitely a way to avoid the unnecessary radicalization of ratings.

Not even the Inception effect aka. too dumb to know when something is bad aka. The Emperor's New Clothes, can explain it.
Is the site overran by paid shills.
I gave it a 3/10 purely for the aestethics.
It is legitimately one of the worst films I have watched in years. Of course I don't watch random trash, but as far as Sci-Fi or even Sci-Fantasy, this was a piece of garbage, a blatant ripoff of the Day The Earth Stood still and Contact and I thought the single mom concept was just the icing on the cake for an all around piece of *beep* lecturing mess.
No way, no way at all does this film receive above 6 unless ratings have become politicized where the "message" is rated, not the film.
Stalinesque applauding in written format.
F you, who ever produced this.
