Gold : Unnecessary Chain Smoking was Sickening

Somebody decided to make McConahey's character a constant cheek-sucking smoker. Drunk and fat would have worked just fine. It was so unpleasant, I almost walked out.

Farting at dinner is only acceptable if you let the lady go first. That is the proper etiquette.

A big, fat, long, juicy fart right during desert would be like a breath of fresh air compared to someone lighting up like the character in the movie.

While I wasn't about to walk out, I thought it very interesting how my views on excessive drinking and smoking had changed. Back in the day, those behaviors were very common among by group of friends. To look at someone being that way now made me a little sick to my stomach. That said, they really did a good job molding the Kenny Wells character with those devices!

You self righteous kunts are the worst, not only should no one be able to smoke even outside they can't even put in factual films anymore. This is based on a true story from a different era you dumb fk, get over yourself!

The events this movie is based on took place in 1993, not the 40's, 50's, or 60's. Since you seem to want cultural accuracy for the "bygone" era of the 1990's, smoking was already rare among professional people in America by that time. This was especially true of people involved in mineral exploration which is a physically demanding activity. The rare field geologist that smoked was looked down on as someone who wouldn't be able to keep up with his peers. Since the 2 main characters in the movie were a composite of 3 actual people, the whole idea that McConaughey's character was a trashy drunk addicted to nicotine was created in the minds of the writers. My point is they unnecessarily overemphasized the smoking thing to the point it was sickening to watch.

I WORKED at a Australian mining company in the 1980s and have sat in meetings with chain-smoking geologists. I've gotten drunk with them a few times but mostly could not keep up.

I didn't pay to see this but I snuck in for a few minutes and saw about 7 people walk out and leavethis is such an epic flop but hey at least it's mathews favorite role. LOL!

I'm an intense moviegoer.

Not sure why you feel that way. It was part of his character. This character reminded me of my brother. Chain smoking beer bellied optimist with a force of nature personality. Always upbeat. Always wanting to have fun and search for his pot of gold. He ended up with lung cancer from the smoking. But when I talked to him even though he had went through hell, lost most of his weight, had been in a coma for months he was hell bent on kicking the cancer and was totally upbeat. He was dead a week later. Quite a character and I can still see his face and hear his laugh. In a dark and depressing world we need more crazy optimists who never give up no matter how bleak it gets.

Good thing he never once actually exhales any smoke.

imagine if there was not a scene at all- where he wasn't smoking. Now that would be fun

I feel your pain, AuAgFinder. I have health problems and even turn away from the TV when I see a lot of smoking. I'm glad you posted because I love McConaughey's work but I have to weigh that against getting anxious watching the smoking.

I know it's mental, and I wonder whether your comment was about being anti smoking or you have a problem similar to mine. I would never get behind a movement to ban smoking on film or TV, but it's nice to have a heads up so I can decide whether to see it.

The fact that the score and reviews aren't much higher than 6 plays in, however that could be attributed to his very recent comments about supporting the President. That would be a real shame, if people are giving this movie or any movie, bad ratings because of their political views. Or vice versa, giving good ratings because they support his comments. My brain hurts!

I guess the real person was a drinker and smoker. And he died a year later at the age of 52 and he was broke. So his lifestyle definitely shortened his life. Now maybe they should have stated that at the end of the movie and it would have been a sobering thought against being a fat smoking drunk. Instead they let us believe he walked away rich and happy.

There was a lot more drinking than smoking in the movie. Considering almost 100,000 people die every year from alcohol-related deaths, and the figures for tobacco are waaaaay over-hyped (https://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/blowing-smoke-about-tobaccorelated-deaths), it's strange that people don't talk more about the "sickening" effects of booze

So there is this thing called story telling. In movies and other visual mediums actors are used to portray characters. This character was loosely based on a real person. Apparently that person smoked and drank. Go find your safe space

I dont understand why people always kick off when someone is a smoker in a movie. Why are they aloud to drink alcohol but not smoke cigarettes?

Because drinking doesn't stink up the entire room, I'm not forced to drink the portion of the drink that is spit out, somebody else's drinking doesn't make my clothes stink, a moderate to light drinker is not destroying vital organs like a moderate to light smoker is, drinks don't catch the house on fire if you fall asleep with the glass in your hand, drinks don't make your car smell like an ashtray, drinks don't burn holes in furniture or skin, et cetara, et deters, et cetera.

I'd be inclined to differ, since public intoxication is pretty sickening itself. I've seen people act in disgusting ways under the influence of alcohol. Both me, and people I know, have been hassled by drunk people when walking down the street, minding our own business. Most of the time it's harmless, but annoying.

But every so often you get people who want to start fights, or people who piss in public, sh!t themselves, vomit in the street or just scream and yell like idiots. Man, you people drive me up the friggin' wall. I'd gladly stop smoking if it meant that you people could only drink in private, in your own homes. Or better yet, not at all.

God forbid, what would some of you lushes do if you suddenly couldn't drink wine or beer anymore? I'd make that trade in a second Cut off your supply of sloppy booze
