Passengers : Would you have felt differently about the film if…
Re: Would you have felt differently about the film if…
It would have felt like propaganda, not because of any homophobia (actual or apparent), but simply because art has societal context. For a while it seems 9/10's of children's films had the same message (be yourself, whatever that means, no matter what anyone else says, and manifest it however you please). So to have a slew of movies with no apparent purpose but to portray an alternative lifestyle already so often purported would just feel like white noise.
I'm sure there'd be an audience for it, though.

To me, the more interesting question is, would there have been such a backlash if she'd woken him?
Re: Would you have felt differently about the film if…
Yeah, I think that's an interesting question too.
Re: Would you have felt differently about the film if…
I doubt it, in fact they'd probably say he was a jerk for being upset about it.
I don't care about a troll who doesn't pay for his opinion telling me how to review movies.

Very good question.
I honestly feel like more people would empathize with her if she woke him up.

Agreed.
"That poor woman got stuck on a ship that MEN BUILT and it malfunctioned. Those bastard men ruined her life by making that ship so poorly. She deserves to take at least one man down with her."
And can you really picture a female character waiting for a year to wake someone up??
I think Jim showed great restraint.
Get off your soapbox while I play you a tune on the tiniest violin.

She waited about 15 seconds. And then her plan was "let it all burn down."
Crying children will dry their eyes. Sleeping babies will awaken and take to the skies!

I think he did too. I'm a woman and yes, what he did was wrong, but I couldn't blame him. I'd go insane after a year too. I'd probably wake up someone else if I was in the same boat. At least he did let her know of the last working pod in the end. I think many people claim they would never wake up another person in that situation, but they've never been in that situation. So how could they possibly know?
I do, however, think it would've been a better story if she did wake him up first. I thought it would've been better if she was the one that waited for a year, looked at all the professions of the people in the pod, saw he was a mechanic, woke him up, and then asked for his help. He still would be allowed to be pissed but maybe he would've seen the ship was getting destroyed and helped.
Re: Would you have felt differently about the film if…
Not that there's anything wrong with it, of course.
Re: Would you have felt differently about the film if…
Well, yeah. I didn't hate the movie, but it didn't do much for me. Jennifer Lawrence being eye candy was one of few highlights, take that away and I'd be even less interested.

Unless they have artificial gestation technology (thereby allowing a gay man/couple to reproduce w/o needing a surrogate, etc.) why would the backers of this colony allow any gay/lesbian people to go? (Or old people, Lawrence Fishburne/Andy Garcia!)
You are establishing an isolated human colony effectively cut off from the rest of the human race for the unforeseeable future. You need all the genetic diversity you can get. You'd damned well better be only taking people ready, willing and able to start reproducing ASAP. And young enough to have a long reproductive life ahead of them. And that's going to mean eliminating some people from consideration.
