Silence : Made me sympathetic to the Japanese

I mean it was an interesting exercise for the time period of how a country can protect it citizens from an insane cult trying to take hold of it's people.
They learn they can't martyr them so they have to silence them.
I found it pathetic and inhuman that the priests continued to believe in their imaginary sky daddy even though it meant innocent people they put in harm's way were tortured and murdered.
The fact that the priests still clung to their psychotic cult nonsense shows the depth of delusion and the horror of religion.
It's silly that there are even words like "apostate" - like "I don't believe in made up fairy tale nonsense anymore" should have a name.
Religious people who try to indoctrinate others are the greatest threat to peace and technology in the world. Religious people who try to indoctrinate others are terrorists, because that is precisely how terrorism begins: indoctrination.

I hope this is just seen as a page in history toward a future when humans evolve past the horror that is religion.

I thought that the Japanese actions in the film were quite chilling, personallyanticipating totalitarianism. I can understand a backlash and restrictions (although the film never really delves into why there would have been a backlash), but the authorities' determination to eliminate Christianity proved absolute.

Didn't they? I thought Inoue made it clear that spreading Christianity would take control away from them. Made total sense to me.

You've got a country where the Daimyos and Shoguns are in charge with relatively little trouble from the peasants. Then a bunch of foreigners come in, not to forcibly invade, but to spread the "word". More subtle and with more finesse but perhaps even more effective than any war could have been. It's about followers. Get the natives to believe what you believe, then they are bowing down to you and your god, and now you have complete control over them. There is nothing they wouldn't do for their god and religion. In real war, you can physically take them over but not their hearts. In religion, they willingly hand over their hearts and souls and, if asked, bodies too.

The Japanese understood this and put a stop to it, pronto.

I found myself sympathising very much with all parties: the Church, the Japanese Christians, the Japanese Buddhists, the Japanese government, and the various individual players in the overall scheme.

I really loved the performances and characters of the Inquisitor and his underlings - they provided balance in what could have been a one-sided story.

But the film isn't trying to condemn the priests, I don't think, or vilify them as you seem to be so hellbent on doing. I think you're missing out on the film's nuances, complexities, and richness by simply writing off massive swathes of the film's characters and themes (for instance, boiling the title down to simply mean the tactics of the inquisitors).

The film is too detailed and carefully constructed to be limited that way.

I have seen it but I tend to find that you have to watch most Scors Movies a few times because of their run time. There is always some thing that you miss and you have to let the movie sink in before making a decision.

The scary thing is people like the OP aren't just insane, foaming at the mouth idiots babbling on nonsense that everyone can easily ignore, no, people like that run Western colleges, schools, they influence culture, Hollywood etc. The young generation is being influenced precisely by psychopaths like the OP.

Culture is transnational. There's no "their" culture, or the culture of blacks, or the culture of flying eggplants. Culture belongs to everybody.

And if culture is enforced by the authorities, it's not culture; it's policy.

Christianity had been accepted for decades until other concerns came into play that had far less to do with religious differences but more to do with Spanish Imperialism and internal politics of a Shogun government which was afraid of outside and inside threats which Christianity represented both.
