I am extremely doubtful that they made their based on one board. Like in most businesses they are making a financial decision, right now they think it will save them money. However, I don't think they are thinking in the long term in advertising revenues. With less people visiting IMDb, there will be less potential for advertising. It is actually a terrible business decision.

YOu're right. More than the troll-alert flags they received, it's the revenue they cared for. Also, the CEO was quoted saying that maintenance of this board was too much for them. I'm not sure how they lost their minds. As you said, their revenues will be going to tumble down and who knows, this site could be history.

Im shocked and baffled.
The message boards despite the negative trolling and fanboying, are the part that i like most about IMDb and is what kept me coming back here.
So, im not sure if i will frequent this site much longer once the boards are gone.
I dont think its a smart move from IMDb at all.
They should hire more moderators instead of shutting it all down altogether.
I skip reading the bottom line, because it is usually some lame signature.

^^This plus a whole lot of people are going to have to move out of mommies basement & venture out into the daylight.
For them to put down their keyboards, phones, tablets,etc & not having anyone to harass or torment or just to wiseoff to after getting yelled at by mom & Davis going to leave them in shock. I'm happy for once that I'm behind a keyboard because I do t have the heart to see how ugly it's going to be for those losers & I guarantee it's going to hit them harder than a alcoholic without a bud.
Sigh.. nothing's forever & everything has got to end sometime. What's hard is that to them this isn't just a place to ask about & discuss movies but rather trolling around here is their way of life. This IS their Facebook if you will. Oh well!

I actually wrote the words "nothing is forever" to someone last night, someone who was one of those people that you describe, a basement dweller with an extreme negative outlook on mankind.
IMDb shutting down their boards is like YouTube disabling comments on their videos.
I know there is hate everywhere, thats why we need moderators, ironically also in life/politics, because there is just too much Black & White going on.
I doubt that the dwellers will venture into daylight because of this, but these dwellers will find another place to dwell, so will i, because IMDb without its message boards will just be a site about numbers and names, the way Facebook used to be in the early days.
I just think its a pity and im already taking it as a loss or "break up", because other than putting my personal rating down for a show or movie that ive watched, to keep track of things that ive seen in my lifetime, there is little use for me here.

Interesting. It seems the "positive" effect comment is directly related to Trump. There's a lot of negativity in the backlash against him, i.e. Berkeley and other colleges. So just make it so no one can comment, then the liberals win, because winning for them means no one has a counter opinion. This would not be happening if Hillary was elected.
Amazon has enough money to cover any loss, it means nothing to them to shut this down. But having an open forum to counter views does cost them something, their liberal peace of mind. This trend will continue throughout American culture as long as Trump is president.

These boards may not be "providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority" of 250 million monthly users but, I bet they were considered a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of CONTRIBUTORS.. i.e. the people who provided this profitable little dabatase for free. I don't see why IMDB can't continue to keep these boards active, as a 'thank you' for those volunteers who keep IMDB's content current and accurate.

I think IMDb has forgotten they don't populate their database, we do - for free.
We're the ones who fill in the cast, crew, trivia, goofs, quotes, etc. We're the ones who write the episode descriptions, find and load the images. We write the reviews.
We basically do it all. If it weren't for us, IMDb would be nothing but a list of titles over blank pages
Now IMDb is taking away our ability to have that discussion, but you'd better believe they still want us to work for them for free.
