Westworld : William Goes all Rapey and Stabby

William Goes all Rapey and Stabby

I just don't understand how William, on vacation for a few days, falls in love with Dolores big time, but then because he loses her he starts to rape and stab her A LOT. I'm just trying to visualize the writers discussing this around the table

"Yeah, he'll be like a super nice guy hero, but once he gets dumped once, let's have him come back and stab and rape her a lot. How does that sound?"

"Sounds pretty f'ed up."

"Yeah, but people love guys who get dumped and then act out their anger by raping and stabbing women. It makes him cool. We can even dress him in black and make him a bad ass."

"It doesn't make him a cool badass, it makes him a rapist who also stabs and kills a lot. That's not cool."

"Yeah, you're probably right. But people want to see women raped and stabbed Plus, it's HBO."

"I guess. We have to do something until GoT comes back."

Re: William Goes all Rapey and Stabby

I knowthe idea of someone becoming possessive and jealous and a little psycho when emotionally rejected is really out there.

Re: William Goes all Rapey and Stabby

I think he fell in love with Delores, he spent all that time at the park looking for her. He found her back in her loop, he looked so relieved to see her and she looked at him and smiled..but then smiled and took the can from the other guy. Just like she did with William. That's when he realized she was a 'robot' and could never love him like he loved her. He left and married Logan's sister and I guess he was always looking for these robots to be 'alive.'
Just my thoughts.

Re: William Goes all Rapey and Stabby

Because he thought there was something more to Dolores (and there actually was, but it was covered up) and he spent quite a while killing anyone who got in his way when trying to find her.

He expected to find her, and he'd rescue her, and he'd find a way to get her out of the park because she seemed like a real person who didn't belong there

Then after not being able to find her, he goes back to Sweetwater and sees her back in her loop as if their journey hadn't happened. He saw her as no different from the other hosts, and everything he felt for her, everything he did to try and find her, it was all a lie. All a program that some engineer created.

Re: William Goes all Rapey and Stabby

I was not convinced by William's sudden and severe transformation. He wasn't necessarily too old to have some kind of epiphany, but I do think he was too old, regardless of the emotional pain that he experienced, to have abruptly decided, "Hey, my life's work is to be an even bigger, more sadistic corporate *beep* than my future bro-in-law!"

Re: William Goes all Rapey and Stabby

It wasn't all of a sudden though was it? He has been coming back to the park for 30 years the transformation could have happened slowly over time. Plus the things he did to Logan on the way must have affected him. Not sure if Logan even made it out of the park

Re: William Goes all Rapey and Stabby

He was already this person.

Re: William Goes all Rapey and Stabby

The way I see it is that William was 'programmed' by life to be a decent sort of guy. He's got where he has, ie marrying into a rich and powerful family, by charming his soon to be wife with his nice guy persona, but such attributes are not required in Westworld. If anything, they're a hindrance if you want to get the most out of the game.

Dude, that is one gay looking signature.

Re: William Goes all Rapey and Stabby

Listen he doesn't go all "rapey and shabby" because he loses Dolores, or because it's HBO. Losing her means losing trust in Westworld's authenticity forever, therefore he looks for hosts that can hurt him back. Plus, he thought that Dolores was different, that if he meets her again, she'll remember hm, because she started showing feelings and so called "free will". Losing her, means understanding that all of that was another park trick, and she got back to her loop like a good host.

Re: William Goes all Rapey and Stabby

Why wouldn't losing her just mean that she had been wiped? Being conscious and "real" doesn't negate being vulnerable to a memory wipe. The park erased the Dolores he had known, but that shouldn't meant that the version he had known never really existed. She was getting close, but then Logan stabbed her and the park rebooted her. It was tragic, not fraudulent.
