River : Surprise ending
Re: Surprise ending
Dance scene was amazing.funny, joyous but also heart achingly sad.smiling but almost tearful too.whole series and cast were brilliant.
Re: Surprise ending
I loved the ending - so surprising that such a tall man - not a spring chicken either - was capable of such movement. I hope there is another series.

Re: Surprise ending
True. I was able to appreciate that fact even as I found other aspects to be off-putting.

Re: Surprise ending
I cried my eyes out at the end! So touching and beautyfull! And so sad!!
Re: Surprise ending
I loved the ending.
Re: Surprise ending
Yup. I cried too and I am not easily moved by tv or movies, although I have been known to cry over books (and making a fool of myself in public transport)
I was already prepare for something emotional when I realized we were going to be treated to a "replay" of their last moment together. So much so that I actually paused and waited until the next day to see the ending of the show because
a) I wasn't ready for the emotional punch I knew was coming
b) I didn't want the show to be over.

Re: Surprise ending
I did too. What a great mini-series!! It was bittersweet ending. He's awkward in every relationship but one and doesn't realize that until it's too late. Very bittersweet for me.
Re: Surprise ending
I did not understand the actual murder case.
So Frankie got told who his real mother is - by her angry brother Jimmy for standing her up, right? Or did Bennigan somehow convince him to kill his own mother to stop her from exposing his illegal business?
Anyhow, he got drunk. The otherwise peaceful, submissive guy unluckily always carries a gun, has access to a car from his boss / actual father and sobers up enough while driving (we see him not being able to drive even remotely straight that night) to reach Stevies position that she obviously hadn't told Jimmy about so how does Frankie know how to find her? How does he manage to get there without getting into an accident or getting pulled over by the police, as drunk as he is?
So right at the moment Frankies driving by, Stevie is leaving the restaurant and crossing the street, even waiting there to call out River for not managing to confess his love to her. He wasn't circling the place since that would show up on the traffic cams. No, he managed the perfect drive-by while being piss-drunk, driving straight up to his unsuspecting mother, exchanging looks of recognition, then quickly realizing his chance, pulling out his gun, driving straight up to her, shooting her perfectly in the head and taking a turn to get away! No one has seen the car since, no camera picked him up when he was fleeing the scene and his grandmother mummy manages to quickly get rid of the car.
I also havent understood how the Stevie and the Somalian got exposed. How did Bennigan figure that out, when not even River did? Finding and killing the latter (that immediately went into hiding) before the police even knew about his existence! And what reason did Stevie even have not to involve River at that point? She trusted him to take care of Frankie in case Bennigan has her killed and surely she didnt suspect him to go running to his boss (whos married to a corrupt judge involved)? There was no hint that Frankie was involved in any way and she didnt seem to hesitate to bring his father Bennigan and his business down.
While greatly delivered, I feel like Rivers mental problems (rather far fetched for everybody at the force to protect him this way and his new partner Ira even letting the man drive!) and his love story with Stevie was abused somewhat to divert the viewer from a whole lot of holes in the plot.
Thats why I couldnt believe the ending as is was and expected another twist before the restaurant scene. If he hadnt confessed (and even that was ambiguous), how could they have even arrested Frankie? Or did Frankie leave prints, DNA or even some stuff in the car and the police ignored that evidence but magically is now allowed to use it?

Re: Surprise ending
Unlike other Netflix offerings like "Jessica Jones" and "Orange is the New Black" this one didn't strike me as the least bit addictive. I am not looking forward to season 2.
Re: Surprise ending
I just finished watching this series. I thought it was excellently acted. Now, to answer your questions. This is just my opinion and what I got from the various relationships that River has had in his life.
I believe Bennigan was behind it all, generally it's someone with a lot of money and a lot to lose, that certainly wasn't Bridie but she knew all about it and seemed to approve because of the money Bennigan was giving her. He got a 14 year old Stevie pregnant, she wanted to abort the child but seemed to be forced to carry the child to birth. Not sure if Bridie was extorting money from him or if he gave it freely, but she was getting money from him to raise Frankie and to live. Because Stevie was investigating the illegals entering the Country, ties to her bosses husband and she was getting to close to the truth. He couldn't killer her but he could tell his son that his mother, Stevie was his real birth mother and planned to abort him. Apply some alcohol, keeping telling him what she was planning to do,setting up his own son to murder his own mother. He was the one paying off Judge Tom Reid to bring all the illegals into the country as quickly as possible so they could work for one of his companies. As for Frankie driving drunk, we don't know the timeline and it was rather vague. If what she may have learned turned out to be false then his relationship with all three would remain in tact.
That too was a little vague. She appeared to want to help Haier get into the country legally, she went too deep, she seemed to have discovered a conspiracy headed by Bennigan, the Judge and the Library woman. I don't know how much each person knew and when they learned of the conspiracy and how deep it went. It was a puzzle with a lot of pieces missing. It wasn't explained very well. River was a complex man with his visits from his manifestations, I can only think she didn't want to involve him because of his relationship with the Reid's and Bennigan until she had enough evidence against Tom and Bennigan to bring him into it.

Re: Surprise ending
I think Bennigan was behind most of it. However, Frankie may have done what he did on his own initiative, more or less. Apparently he was tired of his job where he was being bossed around, so he told Stevie about the irregularities, hoping to be allowed to leave. Stevie had been promised that they would "keep Frankie out of it," when he went to work for Bennigan, apparently meaning the illegal stuff. So she decides to investigate and gets an illegal to help. Frankie gets upset and angry that Stevie is going to "tear the family apart again," as she did when she sent her brother Jimmy to jail. That left Frankie "alone with Mummy," for some years, because her mother was angry with Stevie and they were estranged. Then, Jimmy decides Frankie needs to be with a woman, so he gets him drunk and takes him to an older prostitute. Frankie is unable to "perform" under those circumstances, so he is even more frustrated and angry. He may have known where to look for Stevie, because that seemed to be a favorite restaurant. When he gets back home, he must have blabbed to his "mother," because she then dumped the car and gave him an alibi. It isn't clear that Frankie was ever told that Stevie was his mother. Bennigan was trying to use that as a way to keep River from pursuing the investigation, saying it would destroy Frankie to find out he killed his own mother, or so I took him to mean.
Frankie may have blabbed to Bennigan about what Stevie was up to, so he knew to have the Somalian killed, which he did through a desperate illegal who needed money. The system of payment through the storage locker, of which they were examining the videos exposed the fact that the judge also came there for payments. The judge seemed only to be guilty of letting illegals become legal. When he first was anonymously offered money to do it, he ignored it. It was only when he received blackmail pictures of his affairs with other women that he caved.

Re: Surprise ending
The most beautiful and artistic scene I have ever watched in a series.
Re: Surprise ending
Gotta disagree on the ending So many possible murderers existed and they go with the one that is least likely to have happened almost as if they wanted to throw nothing at the audience except red herrings and then pick the character that no one would expect. Why not just say it was the janitor that you could see in the background in one shot during the credits it would have made as much sense.
I felt like I was ripped off You watch a show like this you the audience are trying to work out who did it along with the character your following the last thing you need it the bad guy to be someone tossed out at the end that you would have have never seen as the possible person before.

Re: Surprise ending
When it comes to the part where he mentions the security tape showing the car being dumped by bridie in a coat, I was like, what, did they SHOW that?!
